Black Haw Viburnum prunifolium
The black haw can be either a large
shrub or a small tree, ranging in
height from six to thirty feet tall. Its
leaves are elliptic to ovate, finely
toothed, and dull. Its white flowers
are in flat clusters, and its fruit is
bluish black. Found in bogs and low
woods, the black haw was first used
by the Cherokee, Delaware,
Oklahoma, and Micmac tribes.
Later, it was adopted by Europeans.
It was used to treat painful
menstruation, prevent miscarriage,
and provide relief after childbirth.
