Evolution and Creation Darwin’s diary - November 12th 1834 Galapagos Islands “We are anchored close to the shore. Today I went to the island and started looking around for animals and plants. I found some fossils and these led me more and more to the conclusion of evolution. Capt Fitzroy came ashore with six sailors and also started to look around. Capt Fitzroy was still convinced about God and creation though………………..” EVOLUTION and CREATION • In 1831, Charles Darwin, a 24 year old Englishman set off on H.M.S. Beagle on a round the world voyage. His findings caused a revolution in Biology. • Read the sheet to see what happened! EVOLUTION and CREATION • Imagine………. • A group of tortoises are searching for food. The tortoises which only have short necks can only reach the leaves closest to the ground • Finish his thoughts……….. EVOLUTION and CREATION • In each generation, if there is a • • shortage of food, what happens?.. Darwin used examples of birds. Flying from South America to the Galapagos Islands, they slowly changed from generation to generation to suit their new home and environment, until eventually, they become a different species. Darwin discovered 13 NEW species of finches on the Galapagos Islands which exist nowhere else in the world! So gradually, think about this…..what about the same things happening to fish, amphibians etc? EVOLUTION and CREATION • When Darwin and Fitzroy • returned to England, there was a great outcry because England was a devoutly religious country and Darwin’s theory – ‘The Origin of Species’ seemed to totally contradict the view of a creator God There was even a debate about it in the Houses of Parliament!
