Biomes Think back to ecosystems…. Individual- 1 specific organism Population- all of 1 type of living organisms Community= Only the living factors Ecosystem= Living and non living factors Biome= Ocean Biosphere= Earth What are biomes? Biomes are large regions of Earth. Each biome has a certain kind of climate. Different communities of living things are found in different climates. Earth’s major biomes Earth has six major biomes. Write: A biome is a large group of ecosystems that are similar is some ways. The major difference is climate. World Biomes Tundra Taiga Temperate Forest Tropical Rain Forest Grassland Desert Think of some organisms that you might find in a desert…. Deserts are the home to many living things. In fact, deserts are second only to tropical rainforests in the variety of plant and animal species that live there. How do you think plants grow in a place that is very, very dry? Many of the fascinating features of desert plants are adaptations -traits that help the plant survive in its harsh environment. Desert plants have two main adaptations: Ability to collect and store water Desert plants often look different than plants in any other biome. Think of some organisms that you might find in a grassland biome… Grassland biomes are covered with grasses, have very few trees, and have long periods with no rain. Two examples are prairies and savannas. Think of some organisms that you might find in a forest biome… There are two types of forest biomes Temperate forests- have four different seasons: summer, fall, winter, and spring. It has animals such as deer, rabbit, skunks, squirrels, and bears. Trees in these forests lose their leaves in the fall. Temperate forest food chain Rainforest biomes Very rainy and hot. Some get more than (240 in.) of rain each year! This makes it summer all year. There are also numerous types of insects. Ecosystems can be as small as a puddle. Rainforest food pyramid Taiga Taiga biomes have long, harsh winters and short, cool summers. The taiga is dry. Most of the precipitation is snow. Most of the trees are pines, firs, and spruces. Gray Wolf Tundra The tiaga’s climate is mild compared to the tundra. The tundra is the Earth’s coldest biome. The lower layers stay frozen all year long. It has an average temperature of (-29 degrees F) Tundra food pyramid Inches of rain fall per year. Marine Biomes Oceans cover 70 % of Earth. In the oceans are marine biomes. Freshwater Ecosystems Many bodies of water are made up of fresh water. Streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and wetlands are freshwater ecosystems. For Homework Choice one of the biomes mentioned in this power point. Come up with a few organisms living within the ecosystem (of your choice of biome) that would make a food chain. Draw and color them. In one to two paragraphs tell how the following will affect the organisms within the ecosystem. 1. A drought occurs 2. Continuous rainfall
