What are basic functions of
organisms?
 1- getting food
 2- getting energy from that food
 3-using the energy from that food and
letting go of things that are no longer
needed like wastes
We are like our cells only bigger.
 Because we need these basic functions our cells need
them also.
 If our cells are thirsty, we go get a drink.
 If our cells are hungry, we go get food.
 If our cells need to get rid of wastes, we go to the
bathroom.
How do our cells get food?
 Animal cells get food when we go to McDonalds and
eat food. Heterotroph.
 Plant cells can’t send the plant to McDonalds, they
turn to the sun and absorb the suns radiant energy to
make their food. Autotroph.
What is the process of you getting
food?
What is the process of a plant
getting it’s food?
Photosynthesis
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
“Light Synthesis”
(putting -together)
 Two stage Process
 1-Capturing the suns energy
green plants
Green pigment
leaves
cells
yellow pigment
chloroplast
red pigment
2- Producing sugars
energy
Co2
stomata
H2o
Its sort of like making a cake
Ingredients
Bake it Out comes cake
Carbon dioxide + water + light
sugar + oxygen
(6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
yields
C6H12O6 + 6O2)
Food
structures
Energy for plant
Storage

Photosynthesis quiz
1. What is ‘light putting together’ ?
2. Name three things that are
required for photosynthesis?
3. Where do these three things
‘meet’ for photosynthesis to
happen?
4. How does CO2 get into the plant?
5. How does energy get into the
plant?
6. What two things does the plant
get after mixing these three
things?
7. What does it do with each of
these two things?
8. What is the chemical equation for
photosynthesis?
9. What is C6H12O6 ?
10. The arrow means?
A. Yields
B. 6CO2 +6H2O+energy
C6H12O6+O2
C. Carbon Dioxide, Water &
Energy
D. Sugar
E. Photosynthesis
F. Sugar- food for energy
Oxygen-waste
G. Sugar & Oxygen
H. In the green pigment called
chlorophyll inside the
chloroplast organelle.
I. Stomata
J. Absorbed by the Chlorophyll
in the Chloroplast
7. Look real close at this chemical formula. How is it
different than photosynthesis?
C6H12O6+6O2
6CO2+6H2O+energy?
Just the opposite of photosynthesis.
How cells use the energy they
get through photosynthesis
Write it down!
