I CAN EXPLAIN CARRYING CAPACITY. CHANGES IN POPULATION SIZE: ENTRANCES AND EXITS Populations increase through births and immigration Populations decrease through deaths and emigration CARRYING CAPACITY maximum population of a given species that can survive indefinitely in a given environment no population can increase its size indefinitely GROWTH CURVES Populations grow rapidly with ample resources, but as resources become limited, its growth rate slows and levels off. GROWTH CURVES As a population levels off, it often fluctuates slightly above and below the carrying capacity. EXCEEDING CARRYING CAPACITY: MOVE, SWITCH HABITS, OR DECLINE IN SIZE Members of populations which exceed their resources will die unless they adapt or move to an area with more resources. I CAN IDENTIFY LIMITING FACTORS. LIMITING FACTORS Things that prevent a population from growing any larger Examples: availability of food, water, shelter and space, competition for resources, predation and disease If any of the limiting factors change, animal and plant populations change EXAMPLE Ten rabbits may live in a habitat that has enough water, cover and space to support twenty rabbits, but if there is only enough food for ten rabbits, the population will not grow any larger. What is the limiting factor? POPULATION CHANGES What are some OTHER factors that would affect the size of a population? Self Check!! I CAN EXPLAIN CARRYING CAPACITY. I CAN IDENTIFY LIMITING FACTORS.
