Why is this the best time to explore? Tools used for navigation were: Compass, maps, and astrolabes. Wanted goods that they discovered during the Crusades (spices, silk, ivory, jade and diamonds) Motives for Exploration Christianity – wanted to spread Christianity to the Asian cultures. Wealth – Wanted to make money by selling Asian products. Fame – wanted to become famous as a explorer. Motives for Exploration Nation’s Pride-competition with other countries to be the first to reach Asia by water. (Portugal, Spain, France, England, Dutch) What goods did the Europeans want? Nationalism- Strong pride in one country’s or ethnic group. Foreign goods – wanted jewels, spices and fabrics such as silk. Who was the first explorer? Leif Ericson is regarded as the first explorer to land in the Americas. Was a Viking (Norsemen) and outlaw who discovered Americas 500 years before Columbus. It is thought that he landed in present day New Foundland or New England. Who was the first European to travel across Asia? Marco Polo was An Italian merchant who was the first European to travel across the entire Asian continent. Marco Polo kept a record of what he saw including some of the wonderful trade products and roads. The first explorer to circumnavigate the globe? Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was the first to circumnavigate the globe, which is to sail completely around the earth. He discovered the straits of Magellan and died on the way home. Who was the first Englishmen to sail around the globe? Sir Francis Drake was known as a legendary pirate, slaver, navigator who was the second person to sail around the globe and the first English. He successfully brought England into exploration by breaking up the monopoly of successful key sea routes of the Portuguese and Spanish.
