DE SOTO 1541 – Explored Southeast United States; first European to see the Mississippi River. FRENCH EXPLORERS 1531 – Jacques Cartier explores the St. Lawrence River and Eastern Canada SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAINE 1608 – Father of New France; founded Quebec, the 1st permanent French colony ENGLISH EXPLORERS 1497 – John Cabot became the first European to explore the North American mainland (United States and Canada) What do you think were some of the affects of European exploration and colonization?
