Cell Division – Ch4/Sect 3
Pgs. 129 – 136
The Big Idea
Cells divide to increase their numbers through
a process called mitosis, which results in 2
daughter cells with identical sets of
chromosomes.
Term
Cell cycle – The regular sequence of growth
and division that cells undergo.
Chromosome – a doubled rod of condensed
chromatin.
Terms and Pics
• Interphase -
The stage of the cell cycle
that takes place before the
cell division occurs.
• Replication -
The process by which a
cell makes a copy of the
DNA in its nucleus.
• Mitosis -
One copy of the DNA is
distributed into each of the
daughter cells.
The Final stage of the cell cycle
in which the cells cytoplasm
divides, distributing the organelles
into each of the 2 new cells
• Cytokinesis-
Stage 1 Interphase – Pg. 130
• Main Idea: During the Cell cycle, cells divide
and grow.
• How do little pigs get to be big pigs? Their cells
___________ and ___________.
• During the first part of interphase, the
Cell grows to its ______ ______ and produces
structures it needs.
• The cells make an exact _______ of the DNA.
This is called ____________.
• Preparation for Cell ___________ begins.
Stage 2: Mitosis Pg. 131
Main Idea: The Cells Nucleus Divides into
two Nuclei.
• Prophase
• Metaphase
• Anaphase
• Telophase
Stage 3: Cytokinesis – Pg. 134

Main Idea:The final stage of the cell cycle.
Cytoplasm ____________.
2 daughter cells have ____________.
Each cell has the same number of
chromosomes.
Structure and replication of DNA –
Pg. 135
Main Idea: DNA Replication ensures that each
daughter cell has the genetic info it needs to
carry out its activities.
• DNA are wound around _____________.
• Its shaped like a twister ladder.
• Each new DNA exactly matches the order in
the original DNA molecule.
• DNA Molecules unwind and separate like a
zipper unzipping.
Questions for this Section
Create 2 questions for this section of the
chapter.
•Use 2 of these sentence starters:
1)Explain the ____________________
2)During Mitosis __________________
3)What happens during_____________
4)Describe the ___________________
Summarize
Summarize the cell cycle:
• During the cell cycle cells grow and divide.
First,
