Research task 1 Francesca Chambers Genre Every film has a genre, genres tell the audience what kind of film it is and will encourage them to see the film is it is a genre they like. Genre means the film follows certain guidelines. One thing that seems to be important to the thriller genre is to uses a antagonist and a protagonist characters. The protagonist is often but not always a unexpected hero or a anti hero Another thing that thrillers must include is suspense and thrills for example, a tense fight scene or a someone doing something they shouldn’t. Thrillers normally will include a complex plan set by the antagonist for the protagonist to untangle and work out. The antagonist is often but not always known to the protagonist. The hero or anti hero often comes out on top at the end of the thriller film. Alfred Hitchcock was one of the first directors to start making thriller films and one of his first was the lodger (1927) and was very exiting and influential because it was a new type of film for the audiences. From 1944 thriller sub genres began to be created such as psychological thrillers in 1990 lots of psychological thrillers where made especially about mental hospitals and patients thrillers now have become more gory with themes of horror and gore although many still do stick to the original themes of thriller. Some sub genres of thrillers include: crime, supernatural, horror, disaster, Adventure Narrative convections are used in thrillers to created a interesting story. It includes the way the story is told, whether it is first or second person, and things cause and affect of different actions and characterization. Characterization is the way the characters are shown and how they are introduced to the audience. This can be done through how other characters talk about them, lighting, sound and actions. Miseenscene means everything in the scene. That includes thinking about what can be used in the frame to create the atmosphere needed for the thriller genre being created. Important things like the lighting and how it reflects the mood of the scene. Also the position of the characters, weather they are going to fight or just stand still. Any props in the scene must be carefully aranged. Everything in the scene must be carefully thought out to create the right mood and setting for the genre. Camera work is very important in media as it can be used to create specific feelings and give hints to the plot. Some camera shots are: long shot, that includes allot of things in the frame, a panning shot witch includes allot of things in the frame and also moves across the scene, a close up witch can include things like a face or a part of someone's body, an extreme close up witch can show very detailed things like the lines of someone's hand , also a low shot that can be used to indicate power, and a low shot that could be used to show vulnerability. Editing is used in media to make smooth transitions from one thing to another, and can make things even more tense and interesting, for example in psycho (1960) there is a edited shot where a strong image of the water going down the plug whole fades into a shot of the woman's lifeless eye creating a mood of loss. Editing can also be used to enhance things and animate things that are not real but need to be in the film for example in the hobbit (2012) the landscape is often made to look lighter in the scenes of good or magical places and darker in the scenes of evil and also editing is used in that film to make creatures that are not real appear to be there. Good editing can be used in thriller films to make things look more interesting or to even create things that don’t exist. Sound is used in media to create atmosphere, it can enhance a scene of tension and can indicate the antagonist and protagonist in the thrillers. For example when the villain appears dark low sounding music might be played and when the hero is on triumphant energetic music may be played. In thrillers sound can be used to create atmosphere and suspense, it can be used to indicate characters feelings and even hint at what may happen next. bibliography Info: slide 1, notes I took in class and a few sentences from Wikipedia. slide 2, a website – timerime.com for the timeline and notes I took in class.
