It has been more than 80 years since the
astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that the
universe is expanding. He was able to determine
that fact by observing the speed and direction that
galaxies are moving. Nearly all galaxies are moving
away from our galaxy, and the more distant galaxies
are moving away faster. That means that all of the
galaxies in the universe (or at least the materials
from which they were formed) were all together
around 14 billions years ago and they have been
moving apart ever since. That is a scientific fact.
But the question of what is expanding is part of the
big bang theory. According to this theory, what,
exactly, is expanding. Which answer do you most
agree with and why?
a. Matter is expanding into a huge empty void
b. Space is expanding or stretching, so the
distance between galaxies is growing
c. Space and matter are expanding, so galaxies
are getting bigger and moving apart.

Is the Sun a Star? Explain who you agree with
and WHY!
Six student were talking about the sun. They had
several different ideas. Here is what they said:
Homework Due Today:
* No Homework
Sam: Our Sun is just an average start made up of hot
glowing gas.
Homework:
Juanita: Our Sun is a huge ball of hot, glowing gas,
but it is too close to us to be a star.
* No Homework
Tillie: Our Sun is one of the many stars found inside
our solar system
Skeeter: Our Sun was once a planet but is now a
large burning ball
Maggie: Our Sun is a major star. The other stars in
the sky are sparks broken off from our sun.
Diamond: Our Sun is a sun. It’s not a star. Suns are
different from stars.

Are we made of “Star Stuff?”
A newspaper article reported that astronomers
claim people are made of stardust. What does this
mean? Pick the answer that best matches what
you think “being made of stardust” means.
a. “Being made of stardust” is not intended to be
taken literally. It means that nobody really
knows where atoms come from, and more than
we know what “stardust” is.
b. The stars produces dust that falls onto Earth.
Ove millions of years this dust becomes
incorporated into living cells.
c. Most of the other elements that make up our
bodies were formed inside stars or during
supernova explosions
d. Our Sun is a star and since humans eat plants
or eat animals that eat plants, we are made
mostly of stuff that originally came from the
Sun.
