 Under NEHRP, FEMA is responsible for
translating research results into practice:
 Develop and disseminate technical
and non-technical guidance
documents based on new data.
 Maintain consensus seismic design
guidance, such as the NEHRP
Recommended Provisions
 Provide input into national consensus
standards (ASCE 7, ASCE 31 and 41)
 Support inclusion of FEMA design
guidance and loss reduction concepts
in the nation’s model building codes

for New Buildings and Other Structures
 New 2009 edition published as FEMA
P-750.
 Primary resource for ASCE/SEI 7-10 and
the national model building codes IBC and
IRC 2012.
 Reference standard for EO 12699.
 Will soon includes supporting publications:
 FEMA P-751 Design Examples
 FEMA P-752 Training Materials
 2014 edition update is now underway.
 Update based only on Issue Team input.

Multi-Unit Wood Frame
Structures: A Cost Effective
Technique (FEMA P-807).
 Developed in coordination with the San
Francisco CAPPS Project.
 Targets “Marina District” and Northridge
style soft story multi-unit wood frame
residential structures.
 Retrofit is limited to soft story only.
 Provides a calculation tool to take into
account strength of all walls present in
the building, including non-structural.

Seismic Rehabilitation Cost Estimator
 The Seismic Rehabilitation Cost Estimator (SRCE) is an online
program for calculating cost estimates for seismic retrofitting.
 SRCE is based upon a new statistical evaluation of the cost
data from approximately 2,000 seismic retrofitting projects from
FEMA 156, Typical Costs for Seismic Rehabilitation.
 No new cost data have been added to the SRCE database.
 The statistical evaluation is based on a data mining approach
known as Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis.
 SRCE is now located at http://www.fema.gov/srce/index.jsp
 Due to FEMA rules, it will soon be relocated to a new site, tbd.

Nonstructural Mitigation Guide
 Nonstructural Design Guide (FEMA E-74)
 Recently improved, web-based design guide.
 Provides design guidance for over 70 different
nonstructural components.
 For each component, guide provides examples
of damage and plans or photos of the
recommended mitigation technique.
 Includes technical specifications, risk rating
forms and sample inventory checklists.
 Short web-based and longer NETAP-based
technical training materials and now available
 New update to capture recent earthquake data.

New Activity: Lessons Learned From Earthquakes
 FEMA and NEHRP capturing Lessons Learned from
recent earthquakes in Chile, New Zealand and Japan.
 All three countries have building codes similar to those in
the US and all three experienced damage in buildings
similar to those built in the US.
 Lessons will ultimately be incorporated into our codes.
