Body Systems
8th grade notes
Notes
A system is a
group of parts that
work together as a
unit to accomplish
a common goal.
Cardiovascular System
Delivers needed materials to the
body
Removes wastes from the body
Interacts with all body systems
Main Parts: Heart, arteries, veins,
capillaries, blood
Digestive System
Breaks down food into simpler substances
that the body can absorb and used by the
cells.
The small intestine contains villi that
absorb nutrients into the body.
The muscular system helps the digestive
system by you chewing, swallowing, and
churning food in the stomach.
Main Parts: mouth, esophagus, stomach,
small Intestine, large intestine, liver,
gallbladder, pancreas, rectum, and anus.
Muscular
Muscles produce voluntary
movement.
Enables the whole body to move
Uses the skeletal and nervous
systems
Main Parts: smooth, cardiac, and
skeletal muscles
Respiratory System
Delivers oxygen to
your body
Removes CO2 from
the body
The cardiovascular
system and the
muscular system help
this system to work
Main Parts: pharynx,
larynx, trachea,
bronchi, lungs, and
diaphragm
Skeletal System
Supports and protects the body
Works with the muscles to enable
movement
Main Parts: Bones, Joints, Cartilage
Endocrine System
Produces chemicals that are called
hormones that help control body
processes.
Main Parts: Glands
Excretory System
Removes wastes
Helps to regulate the water in the
body
Main Parts: Kidneys, Bladder
Nervous System
Obtains and processes information
from the body’s internal and external
environment.
Directs most body functions.
Main Parts: brain, spinal cord,
peripheral nerves, and nerves
Cells
What do you remember about
cells from 6th grade?
Activity 1
Sorting Systems-In this activity you
will find a body system at your lab
station.
Organize each system by cells,
tissue, organ, and organ system
Name the system that you organized
Have teacher check your team and if
she okays it mix it up for the next
team
Move to the next station when the
teacher gives permission
Activity 2
Objective: Systems work together to
maintain homeostasis in the human
body.
Discussion
Describe a time when they were
extremely cold or very warm.
How did your body react?
