Chef
Direct the preparation, seasoning, and cooking of salads, soups, fish, meats,
vegetables, desserts, or other foods as well as participate in the cooking. Plan
and price menu items, order supplies, and keep records and accounts.
• Salary
– In 2009, the California
average annual wage was
$25,985 for entry level
workers, and $67,986 for
experienced workers.
• Education
– This occupation requires
training in vocational
schools, related on-the-job
experience, or an
associate's degree. Some
may require a bachelor's
degree.
– Employees in these
occupations usually need
one or two years of
training involving both onthe-job experience and
informal training with
experienced workers.
What does a Chef do?
• Collaborate with other personnel to plan and develop
recipes and menus, taking into account such factors as
seasonal availability of ingredients and the likely
number of customers.
• Determine how food should be presented, and create
decorative food displays.
• Order or requisition food and other supplies needed to
ensure efficient operation.
• Check the quantity and quality of received products.
• Meet with customers to discuss menus for special
occasions such as weddings, parties, and banquets.
• Prepare and cook foods of all types, either on a regular
basis or for special guests or functions.
