Brimley Area Schools
As school districts begin to infuse more technology into schools, we must
remain conscious of our role as educators of the public¡¯s most precious
resource, our children. Technology can help us in this quest by offering
many new dynamic tools and capabilities that can potentially
revolutionize education and the ways we are able to access information
and confront and solve many of the challenges facing us. As a collective
body of parents, educators, students and community members, we must
pursue our educational objectives as part of a well-structured strategic
plan. Our district has developed a three-year plan that we believe will
chart our course. Administrators throughout the District will support
technology at their sites. Principals will be the instructional leaders for
the on going support to their staff. Teachers will reexamine their
classroom practices and determine how they can adjust their
instructional plans to integrate the use of technology. Everyone will be
involved in the students¡¯ learning.
Our students will leave our school to live and work in the 21st century. We are
preparing them for a world that is technologically oriented, that will demand
people who can use higher order thinking skills. Jobs and life in general, will
require people who can understand complex terminology, communicate clearly,
make sense out of massive amounts of ever changing information, and know
how to use appropriate problem solving techniques. Life itself will demand
higher levels of literacy in all areas of the curriculum, especially science, math,
technology, and communication skills.
Brimley Area Schools has a strong commitment to supporting teaching and
learning with technology. Upgrading the technology infrastructure of the
District was a major part of the local bond issue that was passed in 1999.
With much of this infrastructure in place, the District’
s focus has shifted towards updating computers, technology in the curriculum,
and maintaining the network infrastructure as well as the computers and
peripherals within the District. Brimley Area Schools will concentrate for the
duration of this technology plan on the integration of technology into the
curriculum, professional development, and maintaining the current technology
in the district.
This plan is provided as a current guideline for the appropriate and effective
use of technology in the Brimley Area Schools. This plan will change as
technologies and our ability to apply them develop. Technologies covered in
this plan include but are not limited to those discussed here.
District Profile
Brimley Area Schools, a K-12 district, is located in Chippewa County on
the shores of Lake Superior in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
This is an extremely remote and economically stressed area of the state.
The population is approximately 2500 with 493 being students. The
District covers over 360 square miles and four different townships.
Located within the District boundaries is the Bay Mills Reservation, giving
an approximate 40% Native American student population
School Buildings
Brimley Area Schools has two buildings, Brimley Elementary School (09119)
and Brimley Area Middle/High School (00404) with 42 classrooms. Located at
7134 South M-221, Brimley, MI, the District employs 37 teachers. The student
population is Elementary 255 students, High/Middle School 238 students for a
total of 493 students.

The community, students and staff of the Brimley Area Schools will work
together to create a safe and challenging environment that will promote
success in academic skills, team work, critical thinking and personal
responsibility that enables all students to attain their educational goals.

population and continually evaluates its mission and goals to meet the needs of
the communities served.

VISION AND GOALS
Technology Mission Statement
We live in an Information Age. It is no longer possible for teachers to be
the sole repository of information for a classroom. The effective use of
technology by teachers and students is the key to developing the skills
needed to locate information quickly, solve problems efficiently, and
effectively present results. Technology will be a seamless component in
the fabric of our learning culture in every curriculum area, as well as
having its own goals and objectives for training in its use.
Technology is not a separate curriculum, but an appropriate and important
part of every curriculum at every level of instruction. Students must be
exposed to current technologies so that they are able to access up-to-date
information through worldwide information databases in the subject areas that
they are studying. Students need access to this ever-widening set of
resources.
The Brimley Area Schools Technology Plan will facilitate the development of
each member of our learning community by enhancing their ability to learn
with, and about, technology as they prepare to live responsibly in a
technologically driven society.
Technology Vision Statement
Brimley Area Schools’ vision for Instructional Technology is to provide an
environment for student learning that encourages the appropriate and
ethical use of technology. The District will acquire technology that
enables student learning and provides all students with the skills and
knowledge that allow them to acquire, analyze, organize, and present
information, and promote the use of technology to accomplish real world
tasks. This vision includes access to teaching professionals, who are
themselves well prepared, and to appropriate instructional resources in
every learning environment.
Technology Plan Goals
• All classrooms and computer labs will have up-to-date computers
and curriculum orientated software for each grade level.

Description of Technologies to be Acquired:
All equipment purchased is required to meet the minimum standards set
forth below. These standards will allow all equipment to inter-operate
with all other equipment connected to the wide area network.
POTS: The district relies on telephone access for education, security and communication with
parents. This service should include telecommunications service for outside communication;
telephone switch and communications lines to each room. This service should also include
voice mail and long distance service.
Web Hosting: The district has procured website hosting for communications with parents and
the community at large. This web hosting allows staff and students the opportunity to directly
post web content.
Cell Phones/Pagers: The district provides cell phones/cell phone service and/or pagers to bus
drivers, administrators, and other critical district staff to improve safety and allow for timely
communications.
Cabling: The building data backbone is currently 100mb fiber with the ability to become
Gigabit, building data location drops are Category 5, building voice locations are Category 5,
building video distribution system is coax, and supports two way communications. Network
new electronics should allow for an interface to existing routers for wide area communications
and support SNMP management.
Servers: Servers support SNMP management capabilities, have a 100 mb network connections,
should be cabled directly to a switch data port and support Netware 5.x and Netware 6.x,
Windows 2003 Server.
Switches: All switches located in the building are capable of 100mb and have the ability to
become Gigabit.
Networks support TCP/IP.
Internet Access: The district has arranged for internet access for all computers within the
district with T1 Access via WAN.
Wireless Infrastructure: The district will expand and upgrade this by purchasing wireless
access points at a standard required by its wireless laptops, and by cabling the Elementary
School for wireless access.
Maintenance: The district has purchased maintenance on all of the above technologies where
district personnel are not qualified or available.
Teacher and Student Goals

DISTRICT TECHNOLOGY PLANNING TEAM
Members of the Brimley Area Schools Technology Planning Team also serve on
the School Improvement Committee. This assures that the Technology Plan
and the School Improvement Plan are aligned. The Technology Planning Team
will hold quarterly meetings on the progress of the plan. The plan is approved
by the School Board and the School Board is kept up to date on the progress
quarterly.

CURRICULUM GOALS and STRATEGIES
This age, and the culture in which we live, are increasingly being supported
and changed by a variety of technologies. The Brimley Area Schools is
responsible for preparing its students to be productive, contributing members
of our society. The district ensures that each student masters essential
objectives and advances to his/her own highest potential. Our students will
leave our school to live and work in the 21st century. We are preparing them
for a world that is technologically oriented.
Curriculum Integration / Student Achievement
Technology will be an integral part of every curriculum area, as well as having its own goals
and objectives for training in its use. Technology is an essential tool for the attainment of all
Brimley Area Schools¡¯ curriculum goals and objectives.
Goal: Teachers will provide technological learning opportunities for students across all grade
levels, such as computer usage, Internet access, and age appropriate software. This will be an
on-going supplemental learning component.
1) Brimley is making available United Streaming video to K-12 classrooms. This
subscription service, which was obtained through our local REMC, has allowed our
teachers to incorporate video clips into the curriculum. These video clips and
accompanying materials target the Michigan Benchmarks and standards.
2) Teachers in grades K-6 are using to Accelerated Reader to enhance student reading
skills.
3) Teachers in grades K-6 are using desktop computers to teach basic computer skills
such as mouse usage, minimization and maximization of windows, cut, copy, paste,
and file management. These skills are being developed as students work on a
variety of class work and homework assignments.
4) Keyboarding is an essential skill for students. As a result, it is a course requirement
that 7th graders take a one semester keyboarding class.
5) Brimley offers a required Introduction to Technology class for 8th grade students
which is tied to the Michigan Technology Standards.
6) Beginning in the 2006-2007 school year Brimley began offering an Advanced
Technology Class, as an elective, for students in grades 9-12.
7) Brimley requires all students in grades 9-12 to take a full-year, computer-based
business class that covers the entire MS Office Suite.
8) Teachers in grades 3-12 are using the MS Office Suite to enhance student learning.
Some examples include: essays and reports in MS Word, data analysis in Excel and
presentations in PowerPoint.
Goal: Teachers in grades 9-12 will utilize interactive television courses offered by the EUPISD.
This will be an on-going supplemental learning component.
1) Brimley will participate in at least two interactive advanced courses offered through
our local ISD.
2) Brimley will offer at least one interactive advanced course through our local ISD.
Goal: Teachers in grades K-12 will utilize on-line courseware as a supplemental learning tool.
1) Teachers will be trained in the usage of MS Class Server and Discourse and will
incorporate them into their curriculum.
2) Teachers will use MS Class Server for instruction and assessments.
3) Teachers in grades K-8 will utilize MS Class Server to administer G.L.A.D (Grade
Level Assessment Device) twice per year to assess student mastery of current state
benchmarks with the ultimate goal of raising student achievement.
4) Teachers in grades K-12 will, , utilize other web-based instructional sites i.e.
Connected Tech to supplement instruction.
Technology Delivery
Brimley students currently participate in two interactive television courses through the
EUPISD. The students take French I and French II.
Brimley produces one interactive television course, Spanish, through the EUPISD.
Brimley students currently take Virtual High School courses through MIVU for on-line
courseware. Brimley teachers plan to utilize MS Class Server and Discourse to offer on-line
curriculum to the students.
Brimley 6th through 12th grade students utilize wireless laptop computers through the Freedom
to Learn grant in the classroom in all subject areas.
Parental Communications and Community Relations
Brimley Area Schools believes that having strong communication between the
school, home, and community and the involvement of parents in the district is
vital to the progress of the goals in this plan. The Brimley website is located at:

This website contains the school calendar, school activities, lunch menu, staff
directory, contact information and the school technology plan. Our School
Improvement Committee currently consists of board members, parents,
teachers, students, staff and community members.
One of the district goals is to increase communication between home, school,
and community. We plan to accomplish this goal by:
A.) Updating the school Web Page weekly with school
events, sport schedules, meetings, etc.
B.) Publishing a monthly newsletter on the school Web Page
C.) Fully implementing the parental access functionality of
PowerSchool to provide parents real time access to
grade, homework, attendance and lunch balance
information in a secure environment.
D.) Hold quarterly public meetings on the progress of the
Technology and School Improvement plans.
The District would also like to increase the level of parent involvement in the
District. We plan to do this by:
A) Compile a list of volunteer tasks and recruit parent
volunteers to perform those tasks.
B) Have an open invitation for parents to visit the school
and see how the students are utilizing technology in the
classroom.
Collaboration
Brimley Area Schools is a member of the Consolidated Community School
Services Consortium. People within the community have the opportunity to
attend Adult Education, Continuing Education, Adult Literacy, GED, or High
School Completion classes at Bay Mills Community College or Kincheloe.
The District offers a homework lab and access to Michigan Virtual High
School.
Teachers participate in the sharing of ¡°learning resources¡± through MS Class
Server both within the district and with other districts in the E.U.P.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Brimley Area Schools has made a concentrated effort to provide professional
development opportunities for all staff in technology application and
integration. This type of professional development will continue to be available
in the district. Staff members will evaluate the usefulness of emerging
technologies and be encouraged to “think outside the box” when incorporating
technology into their teaching.
Staff will have regular access to support personnel, such as the District
Technology Coordinator, who can answer questions, provide computer
assistance, and help solve software problems.
A. Staff will have access to visitations, workshops, and conferences.
1.) Encourage teachers to use their Professional Staff
Development monies to further their training in technology.
2.) Inform teachers as to in-service events and workshops where
technology is used to their content/grade level areas.
3.) Encourage teachers to share their technology knowledge
with their fellow teachers.
4.) Use designated Freedom to Learn lead teachers to assist and
train other teachers on laptop usage, and Freedom to Learn
specific software.
B. Regular Professional Staff Development activities will be planned.
5.) An overview of the current state of technology will be
provided at the beginning of each year.
6.) A Fall and Winter in-service will provide special interest
workshops on a grade level/content area basis.
7.) Planners for any area-wide ISD in-services will be asked to
make technology a priority for group workshops each year.
8.) It will be the responsibility of the In-service Committee, in
consultation with the School Improvement Committee, to
assess the training needs of the staff in order to provide
direction for the integration of technology into the
curriculum.
C. Providing for technology awareness will be an on-going activity of the
Brimley Technology Planning Committee.
1.] Within the school district, awareness activities will include
administrators, grade level groups, departments, the
Curriculum Council, active curriculum committees, and the
School Board.
2.] Community awareness will include activities, PTO Events,
Radio, TV, District Newsletter, District Website, and
Newspaper Articles.
D. District School Improvement Plan will be addressed in the areas of
technology.
E. Encourage usage of streaming video for classroom instruction.
F. The school web site will be utilized to keep the students, staff and
community informed of events, activities and notices.
G. Maintain the subscription to online software, CD Rom and DVD learning
programs for individualized software training programs.
H. Students and staff will be encouraged to use the online databases, e-books,
and periodicals offered through the Library of Michigan available from
funding through the state of Michigan.
I. Participate in the EUPISD programs and support groups to stay current
with technologies and collaborate on projects.
J. Collaborate with local school districts, libraries, colleges and universities to
share technology resources.
K. Electronic mail, Internet/Web access, and database access will be
maintained for staff members.
L. Software should be purchased to implement/supplement existing
curriculum goals and objectives. Software purchases need to be
coordinated to eliminate duplicate purchases across K-12 grade levels.
M. An inventory will be kept on all hardware/software, indicating vendor,
purchase date, technical notes, repairs, warranty information,
licensing, and funding information.
INFRASTRUCTURE, HARDWARE, TECHNICAL
SUPPORT AND SOFTWARE
Brimley Area Schools currently has two Novell servers. There is one
staff/student server, and a Border Manager server, which is configured for
Internet filtering (CIPA) and proxy services. The District has standardized on
the Novell Operating System for servers and the windows platform for
workstations. Brimley’s backbone hardware is a Cisco switch based network
with a gig backbone and a T1 connecting the district to the Internet and other
schools within the EUP for our ITV classes. The District’s High School and
Middle School are currently wireless, using Cisco and HP access points. All
classrooms within the building are connected to the network and Internet.
The District currently employs one Technology Coordinator, and one
Technology Aide.

Five hundred and twenty windows based computers; this includes
twenty-three TTI laptops, 45 LWL laptops, 273 FTL, two computer
labs, and computers in elementary classrooms.
Digital Cameras, Scanners, Digital projectors, forty-eight DeskJet
printers, seven networked laser printers, and two high-volume
networked color laser printers.
Thirty-six Palm Pilots for student use.
Fifteen Cisco Switches
Twenty 802.11 wireless Cisco Access Points, and 10 HP Access
Points.
One Dell server with Novell OS, and one Macintosh G5 server with
Mac OSX.
One Dell server with MS 2003 Server.

The District has also budgeted for the maintenance of our student accounting
program PowerSchool. This program gives parents access to their child’s

also been set aside to aid in the ongoing process of educating our staff in the

Brimley Area Schools cannot successfully provide the technological resources
necessary to implement our technology vision and mission statements without
coordination of a variety of resources. In addition to budgeting for technology
through the District¡¯s technology budget, collaboration with other institutions
and organizations is necessary to accomplish our goals.
Brimley Area Schools is an active participant in the EUPISD Consortium and
will participate in the pursuit of Universal Service Funds as well as state grant
programs. The district has, and will also utilize, Title 1, Title 11B, At-Risk,
Title VI, etc. Brimley Area Schools¡¯ General Fund will include designated
funds for development and support of technology programs and equipment.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Effective and efficient use of resources is the key to any successful plan. An
annual method to review, update and add to present equipment and software
will be developed.
A quarterly review of this technology plan will be carried out in order to provide
direction for both current and future technologies.
The District Principals, Tech Coordinator, and the Freedom to Learn Lead
Teacher, will survey the staff annually to determine the following:
Level of use of Instructional Technology by students.
Level of use of Educational Technology by students.
Level of Educational Technology and Curriculum integration at
each grade.
The number and scope of student centered projects done that
Involved technology.
Brimley Area Schools will employ several evaluation instruments in addition to
the surveys. These would include:
CIPA Filter Internet log files determining Internet usage
Network statistics monitoring usage of data volumes and servers
Equipment utilization statistics
Parent Access statistics from PowerSchool
As the State of Michigan initiates grade level technology standards, and
reporting requirements to ensure these standards are being met, the Brimley
Area Schools will create methodologies to ensure both compliance and
technology literacy.
During the first year of this plan, evaluation instruments will be developed and
tested. The above surveys will be conducted yearly and the information
gathered used to adjust the District’s goals in Curriculum, Technology, and
other areas.

The Intent of this contract is to ensure that Students will comply with all Network and Internet acceptable
use policies approved by the District and comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act [Pub.L.No 106554].
The Brimley Area School District has purchased and is currently using CIPA FILTER Web Filtering to
comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. The information from these programs is reviewed and
stored regularly.
Hereinafter referred to as Student, and the Brimley Area Schools, hereinafter referred to as District. The
purpose of this agreement is to provide Local Area Network, and Internet access, hereinafter referred to as
Network, for educational purposes to the Student. As such, this access will (1) assist in the collaboration
and exchange of information, (2) facilitate personal growth in the use of technology, and (3) enhance
information gathering and communication skills.
The Intent of this contract is to ensure that Student will comply with all Network and Internet acceptable use
policies approved by the District.
In exchange for the use of the Network resources either at school or home, I understand and agree to the
following:
A.
The use of the Network is a privilege, which may be revoked by the District at any time and for any reason.
Appropriate reasons for revoking privileges include, but are not limited to: the altering of system software, the placing
of unauthorized information, computer viruses or harmful programs on or through the computer system in either public
or private files or messages. The District reserves the right to remove files, limit or deny access, and refer the Student
for other disciplinary actions.
B.
The District reserves all rights to any material stored in files which are generally accessible to others and will remove
any material which the District, at its sole discretion, believe may be unlawful, obscene, pornographic, abusive, or
otherwise objectionable. A Student will not use his/her District-approved computer account/access to obtain, view,
download, or otherwise gain access to such materials.
C. All information services and features contained on District or Network resources are intended for the private use of its
registered users and any use of these resources for commercial-for-profit or other unauthorized purposed (i.e.
advertisement, political lobbying), in any form, is expressly forbidden.
D. The District Network resources are intended for the exclusive use by registered users. The Student is responsible for
the use of his/her account, password and access privileges. Any problems, which arise from the use of a Student¡¯ s
account, are the responsibility of the account holder. Use of an account by someone other than the registered account
holder is forbidden and may be grounds for loss of access privileges.
E.
Any misuse of the account will result in suspension of the account privileges and/or other disciplinary action
determined by the District. Misuse shall include, but not be limited to:
1) Intentionally seeking information on, obtaining copies of, or modifying files, other data, and

passwords belonging to other users.
Misrepresenting other users on the Network.
Disrupting the operation of the Network through abuse of the hardware or software.
Malicious uses of the Network through hate mail, harassment, profanity, vulgar
statements, or discriminatory remarks.
Interfering with others use of the network.
Use for non-curriculum-related communication i.e. instant messaging programs.
Illegal installation of copyrighted software.
Unauthorized downloading, copying or use of licensed or copyrighted software.
Allowing anyone to use the account other than the account holder. (With the exception of
your parent or guardian under your direct supervision, in which case you are responsible
for everything they do).
F. The use of district and/or Network resources is the purpose of (in order of priority):

The District does not warrant that the functionality of the system will meet any specific requirements the
user may have, or that it will be error free or uninterrupted, nor shall it be liable for any direct or indirect,
incidental, or consequential damages (including lost data, information, or time) sustained or incurred in
connection with the use, operation, or inability to use the system.
G. The student will diligently delete old mail messages on a daily basis from the personal mail directory to avoid excessive
use of the electronic mail disk space.
H. The District will periodically make determinations on whether specific uses of the Network are consistent with the
acceptable use practice. The District reserves the right to log Internet access and to monitor incoming and outgoing
electronic mail messages.
I.
The Student may transfer files from information services and electronic bulletin board services. For each file received
through a file transfer, the Student agrees to check the file with a virus-detection program before opening the file for
use. Should the Student transfer a file, shareware, or software which infects the Network with a virus and causes
damage, the Student will be liable for any and all repair costs to make the Network once again fully operational any be
by subject to other disciplinary measures as determined by the District.
J.
The Student will be liable to pay the costs or fees incurred with any file, which damages the Network, whether
intentional or accidental.
K.
The District has access to all files including E-mail that is stored on district resources. The District reserves the right to
log computer use and to monitor file servers space utilization by users. The District reserves the right to remove files

From time to time, students will create personal and District Web pages which may contain names and/or pictures or
the Student on the Internet. Additionally, the District may provide student e-mail accounts.
Please initial each of the following activities, which you DO NOT want the
student participating in:

In consideration for the privileges of using the District Network resources, and in consideration for having
access to the information contained on the Network, or by the Network, I hereby release the District,
Network and their operators and administration from any and all claims of any nature arising from my use,
or inability to use the District and/or Network resources. To the extent that proprietary rights in a work
product would vest in the student upon creation, I agree to assign those rights to the District.
We agree to abide by such rules and regulations of system usage as may be further added from time-totime by the District. These rules will be available in hard copy form in the Principal¡¯ s office.
Parents and guardians are always welcomed to visit our facilities and view our computer facilities and
students¡¯ accomplishments.
