JOB DESCRIPTION NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR REPORTS TO: Chief Technology Officer/Director of Technology KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Educational Qualification: • High School Diploma (required) • Completion of a four year degree in Computer Science, or a related field with coursework in networking and two years of network experience including wide area networks, and supervisory training or experience; or an associate’s degree in Computer Science or related field, two years’ experience in a wide area network environment, supervisory training or experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. • Knowledge of networking protocols, experience in routed and frame relay network environments, experience with network management utilities. • Certification in network operating system’s software, other appropriate hardware certifications such as Cisco, or any equivalent combination of training, certification, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Strong knowledge of server planning and engineering, Microsoft Active Directory and Google Apps for Education. • Experience working independently with Windows operating systems in an enterprise environment is required. • Strong problem solving skills and communication skills are required. • Knowledge of server virtualization, and Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies would be a strong plus. • Good working knowledge of firewalls, proxy servers, Internet monitoring, TCP/IP networking and services (DNS, DHCP, FTP, SMTP, SNMP), Virtual Private Network (VPN), and Ethernet network technologies is also required. • Knowledge of Cisco routers, switches and backbone equipment is also required. • Knowledge of Cisco Wireless Access Point networking technology would be a plus. NATURE OF WORK Responsible for designing and implementing wide area networks in a local school agency. Employee oversees the installation, maintenance, and operation of a wide area network and associated computer hardware and software. Employee coordinates with the Director of Technology/Chief Technology Officer the evaluation of school system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. Employee diagnoses and resolves complex wide and local area network issues. • Designing and implementing wide area network infrastructure (including servers, Cisco network routers/switches, Cisco wireless access points, DNS, WAN Circuits and Internet Connections) • Interfacing with the NCREN/MCNC network services group regarding their management of our Internet router, firewall and Z-Scaler proxy filter • Programming, modifying and maintaining all necessary telecommunication devices (Cisco Telephones, Unity Voice Mail, PRIs) • Diagnosing and resolving wide area network issues • Monitoring networks to ensure security and availability to users • Participating in long and short-range technology planning • Provisioning users on network and across peripheral applications • Installing and configuring all necessary telecommunications devices • Assisting in developing training for faculty and staff in accessing, using and provisioning district technology resources • Training technical and other staff at the district and building level to follow proper operating procedures and responsible use necessary to maintain the integrity of the network • Maintaining documentation regarding network configurations, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software • Making recommendations, providing proposals, securing quotes and purchasing hardware and software upgrades • Maintaining current network data backups of WAN and telecommunications programs • Attending classes, seminars, conferences and reviewing professional literature to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to wide area network systems and related systems • Communicating and interacting effectively with peers and all levels of the organization structure. • Communicating and interacting professionally with internal and external customers including administrators, instructional staff, support personnel, students, community stakeholders, vendors and suppliers • Working in a team environment. • Providing helpdesk/work order support as needed. • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK: • Strong knowledge of wide and local area network architecture, protocols and diagnostic tools • Strong knowledge of computers and related technologies • Strong knowledge of infrastructure requirements and components of wide area networks and telecommunications, particularly Cisco and VMware • Considerable knowledge of wide and local area network protocols and diagnostic tools • Ability to work collaboratively with and supervise technical support staff • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of technology users • Ability to advise technical support staff • Travel to school sites, regional meetings and state sessions • Does not directly supervise any individual • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Technology Officer or the Superintendent.
