Greenberg, M.D. Diet and exercise are the best ways to help stay healthy and keep in shape, but supplementing a healthy lifestyle with cosmetic surgery procedures will leave you in the best shape that you can be in…healthy and beautiful, both inside and out! Breast augmentation, breast lifts and breast reductions provide beautiful, natural looking results. Combining these procedures with liposuction, tummy tuck, Cellulaze, body lift, facelift, eyelid lift, injections or other non-surgical services is most effective. Regardless of which procedures you select, you can turn back the hands of time! Cosmetic ® and Juvederm, coupled with non-surgical skin tightening to ensure phenomenal results. If you are struggling with those last few inches, Body Contouring can be the answer. The most common body contouring technique is liposuction - and by utilizing the latest and most advanced products, your recovery is fast. SmartLipo MPXTM is ideal for the neck, jawline, arms, breasts, “bra fat,” abdomen, “love handles”, “saddle bags,” inner and outer thighs and knees. It is an excellent complement to conventional Cellulaze, which can permanently remove cellulite. Also consider the “fat-freezing” technique, Coolsculpting TM to get rid of those “love handles” or abdominal fat. Another avenue to consider is having a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty). Especially effective post-pregnancy or after significant weight loss, this procedure improves abdominal contouring and can have you in great shape in a very short period of time. Abdominoplasty is very effective in reducing or eliminating stretch marks, skin excess and for correcting weakening of the abdominal muscles. Reclaim your youthful look and regain your self confidence. Now is the time to have that cosmetic surgery procedure that will have heads turning. The hottest surgical techniques to make you look younger include eyelid lifts, facelifts, deeper laser resurfacing, and rhinoplasty. The eyelid lift only takes about an hour and can give a very youthful appearance to both the upper and lower lids. A facelift, whether it is a mini, lower, or full lift can take years off of facial appearance. A facelift is a great way to pull up the excessive skin, rejuvenate the neck and lift the jowls. Mini, or modified facelifts are often performed on much younger patients before the signs of aging are advanced. Overall, the natural look is of utmost importance. Combining laser resurfacing procedures and rhinoplasty is effective in completing a full facial rejuvenation. In addition, injections work well to eliminate facial lines and wrinkles, such as Botox Now is the best time to get into your best possible shape and show off a younger and more vibrant you! Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.” Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles. ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed. Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures. Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation, combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. I heard from many of you who are also in long-standing book clubs and I was happy to share the list. So for my annual “Beach Reads” column, I’ve decided to share my personal list of books read—or audio books listened to—over the past 15 months and offer very short reviews on a few standouts that I had not written about in previous columns. So here goes … My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has written a powerful personal account of growing up with juvenile diabetes in a Bronx housing project with a hardworking mother, an alcoholic father who died when she was nine, and a large, loving extended family. With television characters like Perry Mason and literary characters like Nancy Drew as role models, the young Sonia ultimately became valedictorian of her high school class, and graduated with honors from Princeton and then Yale Law School. The audio book, read splendidly by Rita Moreno, is a joy to listen to. The Laws of Gravity by Liz Rosenberg A beautifully written and compassionate story about how far family bonds can stretch in order to save the life of one of its own. When Nicole asks her cousin Ari—her best friend since childhood—for the cord blood he has been banking for his children, she never dreamed he would refuse a request that could save her from the cancer that is sure to kill her. But Ari stands firm, and so begins a heart wrenching trial with a judge presiding over his last case before retirement. The Lost Wife by Alison Richman In Long Island-based author Alison Richman’s novels, art is always a central element. In The Lost Wife, art is a means of survival in the Terezin Concentration Camp outside Prague during WWII. When young newlyweds Josef and Lenka are forced apart—Josef to America and Lenka to Terezin, Lenka uses her artistic talent to help her fellow inmates survive their horrendous conditions. The story of how Josef and Lenka meet 61 years later is astounding—all the more because it is based on a real story that the author overheard in a beauty salon. This is a book you don’t want to miss. One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan Tropper From the author of This Is Where I Leave You comes a raucous tale about an aging “one-hit wonder” rock star whose life is sliding downhill fast. When he receives a medical diagnosis that will kill him if he doesn’t get life-saving surgery, he refuses the surgery in order to live out his life trying to be a better man. Wonder by R.J. Palacio Although this amazing book is written for young people, the lessons in it are timeless. It begins with the words: “I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.” The main character has a facial deformity that has kept him home-schooled and sheltered for much of his life. But as he begins 5th grade in a prep school, he learns some harsh lessons about standing out and being different, but also wonderful lessons about friendship, empathy, and courage. The Paris Wife by Paula McLain A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway My Life in France by Julia Child One book is fiction, but based on fact. The other two are memoirs. But all three books focus on ex-pat Americans living in France in the first half of the 20th century, and all are great reads. The Paris Wife is a novel about Ernest Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, and their life in jazz-age Paris, where they became friends with the likes of Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald. A Moveable Feast is a memoir by Hemingway that tells of the same time period, but it was written toward the end of his life, when he seemed to have softened a bit. My Life in France is a delightful romp through Paris after WWII, where Julia Child embraced French culture, took cooking classes at the Cordon Bleu and began her lifelong love affair with French cooking. What an unexpected connection to read that she and Hadley met in Paris and remained friends throughout their lives. I’d love to hear about some of your favorite books. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by weakened and fragile bone tissue that predominately affects women. In fact, half of all women age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis in their lifetime and two million bone breaks are caused by osteoporosis annually, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). Asking your doctor for a bone density test, can give insight about the health of your bones and if you are at risk for osteoporosis. There is increased debate about how often bone density tests should be performed. “Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone; make too little bone or both. As a result, bones become weak and can break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture,” describes Susan Randall MSN, FNP-BC, Senior Director, Science & Education, National Osteoporosis Foundation. Osteoporosis can be diagnosed by a bone density test, which is also called a bone mass measurement test. This test uses a machine to estimate the amount of bone in the hip, spine and sometimes other bones. The test results will help your healthcare provider make recommendations about how to protect your bones. Women aged 65 and older, postmenopausal By targeting woman under the age of 65, or anyone who has broken a bone after the age of 50, should speak to their physician about the pospatients who sibility of receiving a bone density test. The NOF endorses a baseline bone density examination for all need more women 65 years and older, in order to catch osteoporosis at its frequent earliest stages and begin treatment before bones begin to break. Medicare pays for a test every two years and it is common practesting, rather tice for doctors to order them that frequently. There is a new debate about how often women over the age than putting of 65, with normal bone density test results, should return for patients on testing. It is suggested by a study in the New England Journal of Medicine that women in that age group may not need to be a regular retested biannually. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent panel that assesses evidence for health services, schedule, the has reasoned that there is no strong scientific evidence to supstudy suggests port routine testing every two years. Their researchers found that high-risk women with advanced bone thinning needed the most this will yield frequent screening, because it took only a year for 10 percent of more effective them to progress to osteoporosis. Women with moderate bone loss were recommended to benefit from a test after five years. results. The study is calling for the doctors to discuss the appropriate 14r-0/(*4-"/%80."/rAugust 2013 time for patients to receive their next bone density test based on their initial test results, and for doctors to move away from a screening schedule. By targeting patients who need more frequent testing, rather than putting patients on a regular schedule, the study suggests this will yield more effective results. “It depends on the situation and what their baseline bone density test and other lab tests show. There is no formula that you can broadly apply. If the bone density test is completely normal and there are no risk factors, patients can wait several years,” agrees Dr. Sonal S. Parr MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine Weil-Cornell Medical College.” If there are risk factors then the test should be done more often, say every one to two years and should continue if there is evidence of ongoing bone loss. You also need more frequent tests (one to two years) if you are undergoing treatment for osteoporosis.” The good news is that osteoporosis is preventable for many at risk. “Osteoporosis is preventable. About 85-90 percent of adult bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and 20 in boys, so building strong bones during childhood and adolescence can help prevent osteoporosis later in life,” according to Randall. It is also often effectively treated in the men and women who are screened and diagnosed with the disease. By maintaining a calcium rich diet with plenty of vitamin D, doing regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises and following medical treatments as prescribed, bones can be protected. While family health history may account for a significant percentage of risk for osteoporosis, many bone breaks that occur each year can be avoided through awareness, screening and treatment practices. Is There A Viagra for Women with Sexual Dysfunction? Earlier this year, a highly anticipated so-called “female Viagra,” a drug called Flibanserin, was rejected for production by the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA concluded the drug did not seem to really help Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD). This was the second time a so-called “female Viagra” failed to make it on the market. While drug companies have long tried to cure sexual dysfunction in women with a pill, so far there is no FDA approved drug for that purpose as there is no one size fits all cure for this medical issue. Journal of the British Association of Urological Surgeons finds that the nearly two-thirds of women report sexual dysfunction. The top problem cited among women was lack of desire, at 47 percent, followed closely by orgasm problems, at 45 percent. “Different issues tend to arise at different life stages. We see women from literally every stage of life. Sexual dysfunction issues can pop up at any time,” stresses Bat Sheva Marcus, LMSW, MPH, PhD from the Medical Center for Female Sexuality. “As women get older some of them find it more difficult to become aroused and have orgasms, some women find that pregnancy can affect desire. Pain can result from age or medications, childbirth or tight muscles. Low thyroid and depression can lead to low desire.” Nerve obstruction, insufficient blood flow, sexual trauma and chronic stress may also be factors. Either one or a combination of these issues can be responsible for sexual dysfunction. Therefore it is essential to have a frank dialogue with your doctor, therapist or a counselor. A gynecologist or primary care physician may be able to address this condition’s physical aspects, and review your overall health regarding their specific areas of specialty. Both for the treatment of dyspareunia (sexual pain) caused by postmenopausal vaginal atrophy,” explains Leah S. Millheiser, MD, Director of the Female Sexual Medicine Program at Stanford University Medical Center. “There are medications that are used off-label for the treatment of FSD, such as testosterone (for the treatment of low libido and genital arousal disorder), Wellbutrin (for low libido).” A counselor or therapist may be able assist with the emotional side effects. There are effective treatment plans for women with sexual dysfunction. Methods of treatment are best decided by concluding if the issue is physical or emotional or both. “Somehow, when it comes to sexual dysfunction, women all think they are the only ones with the problem and are often convinced there is no solution. Sometimes, you think it’s “all in my head” and should be able to “will” yourself to a solution. But that’s just not fair to yourself,” emphasizes Dr. Marcus. “Our sexuality affects so much of who we are and what our relationships look like. It has such a large impact on our life. There is no reason to ignore the problem and hope it goes away. Women need to understand that they can be helped and if they don’t get help the first place they look, they should continue looking, not just give up.” How Hot Flashes Can Affect Your Daily Life Severe hot flashes from menopause are now being connected to lower work productivity, lower levels of feeling healthy, and greater use of health care resources, according to the 2010 U.S. National Health and Wellness Survey published in the journal Menopause. Hot flashes experienced by women around the time of menopause are usually described as a sudden onset of a warm feeling in the face, neck, and chest. They can last from a few seconds to several minutes. For some women, they are accompanied by nausea, headache, sleeplessness, exhaustion and perspiration, all of which may increase discomfort and anxiety. The survey of more than 3,000 women age 40 to 75, examined the fiscal side effects as well as the health repercussions for women dealing with hot flashes. For women with severe symptoms, it was concluded they lost work productivity at a cost of $6,560, compared with $1,079 for women with mild symptoms. The price points for doctor visits for those with For women hot flashes also increased. A multitude of areas are affected including her sex life, family, social, and work life. Hot flashes are the chief menopause complaint that lead women to seek medical treatment. Some begin experiencing hot flashes when the menstrual cycle is still regular or just becoming irregular — usually just before a period. Hot flashes vary from woman to woman and for the same woman at different times over her menopausal transition. “If she has frequent sleep interruptions, particularly with soaking night sweats or difficulty going back to sleep, then this can cause fatigue. Studies have shown that treatment of hot flashes improves quality of life, regardless of hormonal or non-hormonal treatment,” describes JoAnn V. Pinkerton, MD; Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Director Midlife Health Center at University of Virginia. “Fewer hot flashes, fewer severe hot flashes, less interrupted sleep, all improve health related quality of life.” About 40% of women have hot flashes for more than seven years, and up to 15% have hot flashes for longer than 15 years. The researchers found that the effects of the hot flashes were especially significant for women whose symptoms lingered for many years. Gender Differences in the Use of Prescription Drugs A new study has found that women were prescribed more medications across all age groups, had lower adherence rates to the use of medications and were not prescribed appropriate drugs for their documented diseases, according to a February 2013 study by Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR). The study was organized to investigate the variances between men and women in medication use. The study revealed that women were prescribed more medications than men. During the study time frame, 68% of women were prescribed a chronic or acute medication compared to 59% of men. In addition to the higher medication use, women were not prescribed drugs in alignment with recommended clinical guidelines as often as men. The SWHR study reveals women may need different guidelines for prescription medications than their male counterparts. Gender-specific medicating is recommended, in order to sufficiently meet the medical needs for both male and female patients. Sex-specific dosing on all drugs, according to the study, may be a way to prevent harmful side effects in women and to improve overall health and well-being for all patients. Numerous other studies have shown that women respond differently than men to many drugs. Researchers are only starting to comprehend the vastness of the issue, but many believe that women experience a disproportionate share of adverse, often more severe, side effects when taking certain prescription medications. Researchers say data on these sex differences should be gathered at the very beginning of a drug’s development, even before trials on human subjects begin. Because women are smaller than men, they metabolize drugs differently due to a higher percentage of body fat, hormonal variations and the menstrual cycle. More research is necessary to fully understand the differences in the way the men and women’s bodies process prescription medications and if that process is indeed, different. Should you have any questions about your own prescriptions and how your body is or will process them, consult your physician. O To advertise: YrBET!MJXPNBOPOMJOFDPN The Ronald O. November 1970, Larry was a college junior – when he was shot. The 20 year old from New Hyde Park was in a University of Buffalo campus parking lot. Three guys approached, asking for “a light.” The school newspaper described them as “Three hoodlums; one in a double breasted coat.” Larry told them he didn’t smoke.“…at which point they pulled a gun out and said ‘Give me your wallet.’” Larry resisted, “…so they started hitting me over the head with the gun. It was a gun I recognized from my father (a NYC detective). It was a police .38.” So Larry threw his wallet. Then “I punched them, broke free and ran. And they shot. “I felt a little lunge but didn’t realize I was shot until I put my hand on my back felt the blood.” Larry ran into the nearest dorm and ended “I didn’t realize and up in Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo. “I remember telling my friend to have a big party if I died. It didn’t take long. back & felt the “I identified the guy who shot me!” blood.” Not exactly. “They told me that he was in jail at the time of the shooting.” Frustration! Until two months later. “I was at the student union and saw the guy again! I thought, ‘That’s him!’ Good. I got him. I found him!’’ Turns out “it was the younger brother of the guy I had identified in the first mug shot!” That “little brother” was 17 years old, Vince Foster. He looked just like his big brother. The one in jail. Vince did time. About seven years. He’d be 59 or 60 years old today. But Larry doesn’t think about Vince Foster anymore. And didn’t much after the trial, either. “I was just happy I was OK. I realized life can change in an instant. I remember thinking each day is a great day and I should enjoy it. I ignored anything that didn’t bring me pleasure.” Until Larry landed on academic probation. It took him a semester to get back on the Dean’s list. “I had to get back to preparing for my adulthood.” But that 13-inch scar down Larry’s belly created more good than pain, because of how he’s chosen to use it. “I had to give up other sports, so I started swimming to strengthen my body. For years, little things didn’t bother me. It brought me awareness that you can withstand pain. That bad things can happen, but you can come out of them.” And there was this, “It really helped me at Jones Beach that summer. I had a great story. I had a great line. It’s the summer I met my wife Sue. We’re married 34 years now.” And life goes on. Congratulations on your gorgeous publication, Long Island Woman. New York is where my fashion career began. I have so many close ties in New York, and more and more, our business is bringing us back to New York and I’m loving it. It all started with a paper route when you were 11 years old. At what point did you realize that you had a knack for business? It was actually earlier than that. My first job was when I was four years old. I sold painted rocks from my wagon. It was a combination of design and business, because I would design these rocks and make them beautiful. I sold them with my sister, Mary, who is three years older, so her designs were more sophisticated. Mary sold her rocks for a dime, I sold mine for a nickel, and I did really well. It was fun to work in the spirit of partnership with my sister. I learned at a young age that my customers appreciated good value. But I think I’ve always had a love of fashion, design, and business. To be that savvy at four years old, I guess the writing was on the wall. I remember a neighbor who would go door to door selling things said I was an entrepreneur, and of course I had no idea what that was. Like “Mom and dad – this man called me this name!” When I was seven, I would design handbags and jewelry that would coordinate with these beautiful halter gowns that mom would sew and we would show it on the beach. So, it was always a passion of mine. In fact, my career in modeling was not what I aspired to, but I am so grateful; what an education! It exposed me to the best designers in the world, culture, travel, learning what people need…. I entered that industry as a business person already and the entire time I worked in that industry, I was trying and failing at many businesses. Had one of my earlier ventures taken off, the modeling career wouldn’t have gone as long as it did. It just took me a while to get going. Your modeling career started at age 17 when you were discovered by the Elite modeling agency. How were you discovered? I was a tomboy, which may have concerned my parents. I used to walk around burping.... not a lot of finesse. My parents signed me up at a local modeling school that had just opened in Santa Barbara. I think they thought that the course might help clean me up a little bit. I can’t say that it did, but a scout from Elite in New York came to class one day and asked if I would come to New York for the summer. I think everyone was as shocked as I was. This was right around 1980 and the look of the moment was changing. And suddenly this tomboy girl with one eyebrow and bushy hair that no one knew what to do with, it was an okay look. That was the look at that time. They advanced me the money to go out there and I figured it was an opportunity, even though it wasn’t my dream. I could learn and make money and save up for college, start a business… I knew if I didn’t at least explore it, I might regret it. It was a wonderful eye opening experience for me. And all of a sudden you were making a lot of money in a fast paced celebrity lifestyle. Who guided you for most of those years? I have been really blessed to have great parents who just always taught me that people are more important than profit. I appreciated the opportunities that I had, but I didn’t hold it in such esteem that I would allow it to let me compromise my values. My faith most certainly helped me survive those days. And I was really grateful to have met some really good people, particularly in New York. And something that stood out to me, was that I really appreciated the directness and honesty of New Yorkers. I love how they just cut to the chase and tell you how it is. They wouldn’t sugar coat, they wouldn’t waste your time or their time, and you knew where you stood. To this day, its just an attribute that I love. What were some of the positives and negatives that you came away with from being a supermodel? Oh, you’re very kind. I don’t know that I was that super. Some of the publications that I worked for were very super. But my goodness – Cindy, Cheryl, Christie, Naomi, Paulina – these girls were truly super. I did okay and I am grateful for that. I’m sorry, your question was…? Positives and negatives that came with it. The positives were that that opportunity opened my eyes and my world. Before coming to New York, my world was as far as I could pedal my bicycle. And suddenly, meeting different people, learning about different cultures.... It was wonderful! Also being exposed to the best designers in the world, that was my college and what an extraordinary college education that was. The negatives: For as many good people that I came in contact with, unfortunately, that industry attracts a lot of pervs. As a young girl in a world that often felt dominated by men of questionable character, I had my share of fighting off these situations. I am not a violent person, but I did slug a photographer at one point before walking out of a job. There were a couple of instances that I walked off the job. I was grateful that I never felt desperate to succeed in that industry, and I think its because I always worked hard as a child. I always knew if this career didn’t work out for me, I could do anything for a living, and I didn’t need to compromise my values to succeed. I did however meet many young girls, and back in the day when I was working, girls were 14 years old, and they were being recruited. Many of these girls did not come from a stable home. There were pressures on them to succeed. I experienced them being manipulated. Seeing those heartbreaking situations was truly the most difficult. My encounters were just annoying. So you had an inner strength and a support system to protect you in that field. Yes, and I am extremely grateful for that and I really recognized that not everyone has that. And I love when I get the opportunity to talk to young people who are considering a career in this field, just to be able to help alert them to some of the realities out there. Would you encourage them to go into modeling? Or, do you just want to make them aware of the realities? No. I don’t want to be a killjoy, but when I’m talking to young people who express a desire for this, I usually try to determine if there anything else they would like to do? For a young person who has got a really good head on their shoulders, who is grounded and strong and secure, its wonderful. But something that I do encourage them to do, is to please figure out your values. Figure out what is important to you and put boundaries in place to protect them, because they will be challenged. And if you don’t have those boundaries in place, you are going to find yourself in a vulnerable situation. So at what point did you decide to transition from the modeling world to being a business person? From day one. I always tried, it just took me a while. It wasn’t until 1993. I was basically an aging, pregnant model at my kitchen table. I had put together a small team. When I worked as a model, people used to tease me. They would tell me I was cheap. “Why don’t you buy nicer clothes, drive a better car?” And I’d prefer to think of it as being fiscally frugal. I was investing in people. I loved sports, I liked the idea of working as a team towards a common goal. We’re a very diverse team and I love that. It keeps things interesting. We have great debates, but when it comes to our core values, we are on the same page. I know my strengths and I know my weaknesses, so working as a team was something that really appealed to me. It started with socks. I was actually offered to model a pair of socks and it was at a time where not a lot of job offers were coming my way. I felt that if I didn’t close the door on that chapter of my life, I might not live my dream of design and business. Although people thought it was counter intuitive to begin with a pair of socks, to me it made sense. With a modeling background, swimwear would have been too obvious. And I wasn’t interested in doing an endorsement, I’m too much of a control freak. I wanted to be involved every step of the way. I knew my customer would be too savvy to accept something just because it had my name on it. I really wanted to build something that was solid, that would stand. I thought it would be interesting to see what our team could bring as far as fashion, design, innovation, utilizing luxurious and incredible textures and fabrics. And if women embraced our socks, it would tell us that maybe we were onto something. That’s very interesting. You went with socks when, as you said, it would be very obvious to go with something like swimsuits. That would have opened the door much more quickly, wouldn’t it? Oh yea, but it would of closed much more quickly too. And as it was, the doors really slammed in our faces in the early days of trying to get those socks into the retail board. We heard everything from: “You’re not smart enough.” “We love the socks, but you cant start a brand with a pair of socks.” I am very grateful to that modeling career, because the greatest gift from that career was all of that rejection. So when people said no, it didn’t destroy me, or stop me. If anything, it energized me to know, at least we are talking. At least they’re communicating with us. You know, maybe I’ll come back tomorrow, maybe the circumstances will change, maybe THE LONG ISLAND WOMAN INTERVIEW KATHY IRELAND “You don’t have to share my faith to really understand that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East.” they’ll will be in a better mood… Often I speak with women who have these great ideas and they give up and I ask “Why?” And they say because somebody told them it was a bad idea and said no to them. And I say, “So?” If you believe in it, you’ve got to persevere. Did you have difficulty in the early years being taken seriously because you came from a modeling career? Yes. I do believe my plans as CEO would be taken more seriously, more quickly, had I not had the baggage of that prior career. And often times people would say to me, “Its easy for you because you were known as a model.” And my response to that, is that if you have the gift of anonymity – that’s a gift. That is a fresh slate and you can build your brand however you want without any preconceptions of who you are and what you are all about. You never went to college, correct? Correct! Do you think entrepreneurs need a college education to succeed? That’s such a great question. I believe in education. I serve on educational boards. I believe in it more than ever as we have such a global economy and young people are competing against brilliant kids from all over the world. So anything that you can do to give yourself an advantage is wonderful. However, I also believe that entrepreneurial skills are not always taught in colleges and universities and I believe that is what is needed more than ever today. I believe that even more than a formal degree, its work ethic, its your integrity, its your alertness, its being anticipatory, its bringing value. And to the person who doesn’t have that formal degree, I encourage them to not let that stop you. I have had these conversations with our kids. “Why do I have to go to college, you didn’t go!” And I said, “You answered your own question. You see how hard I work, you see my mistakes.” Many days I think, had I had this education, it might have gone a little smoother a little better. But I do believe that it is a very different time than when we were younger. In our 22r-0/(*4-"/%80."/rAugust 2013 time, kids were getting out of school and they had to find a job. Today young people need to invent one, and those entrepreneurial skills are required in everything from business to philanthropy. It gives a person a lot more power, a lot more control. It’s helpful for everyone, including busy moms who want to have that type of control over their schedule. What are some your criteria when deciding on a product to license? Our mission statement is in bold letters in both English and Spanish and we have expanded that to finding solutions for people in business, and finding solutions for people in love. We also have four promises for every one of the products that our team designs and markets. And that’s fashion, quality, value and safety. That helps us a lot. It keeps us on track and takes the ego out of it. We also want to know what is going on in the factory. Who are these people? How are they working? How are people being treated? My dad worked with labor relations and part of his job included working with the farm workers. As a kid, I went with him to Cesar Chavez rallies. How people are treated is always at the forefront of my mind. And we look for partners who share our core values. You have been a staunch supporter of Israel and I understand that you have a home there as well? We do have some property in Israel, yes. You spoke at AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) where you proclaimed that you are a very proud pro-Israel American. When did you first come to that realization and has there been any backlash or boycott of your products because of your support for Israel? It was really my faith that alerted me to the importance for Israel. I am heartbroken over the atrocities that have occurred throughout history by people who claim and identify with my Christian faith, and who’s actions have absolutely nothing to do with biblical truths, from the crusades to the holocaust. It’s devastating. My first visit to Israel was in 2007. They are his chosen people. What I think is so beautiful, is God’s unconditional love for the Jewish people. I really don’t understand the attacks against this nation. Its heartbreaking to me. You don’t have to share my faith to really understand that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. My last trip to Israel, I got home the day of that devastating earthquake in Haiti. I had just been visiting, doing some work over at Sheba Hospital with the doctors, experiencing the rehabilitation work that goes on there, and it was amazing to me that the Israeli doctors were in Haiti before the American doctors. Whether it’s the tsunami in Japan, Katrina, disasters everywhere…. consistently, Israel is among the first to respond. And this tiny, tiny nation, less than one sixth of one percent of the Middle East, is surrounded by these oil rich neighbors, who really could invest in their people instead of slaughtering innocent lives. I look at revisional history and it makes me angry. This is another reason why education is so important to me, because young people need to know for themselves not be recipients of propaganda. I hate bullying and this is bullying to an extreme. People say, “Why doesn’t Israel give back the land?” And its not about the land. We can read the PLO documents from the 1970’s and how they have changed things to fit their agenda. And seeking to go back to old borders so Israel can’t defend themselves? I don’t understand it. If people don’t purchase our products because they don’t agree with me, its fine. If our business goes down the toilet, its fine. I’ll do something else for a living. I don’t think that it is important to protect a business as it is to protect human lives. I’m not going to let that get in the way and shape my opinions. Has there been any backlash or boycott? It sounds so trivial in comparison to the persecution that goes on around the world. Oh yes, I’ve received horrible emails and communications from people who absolutely loathe me based on my positions. But its really irrelevant, its really okay. How has your spiritual and religious teachings informed your business dealings? It’s really tricky because we sell stuff and I never want to exploit my faith. I often times don’t speak about my faith in a business context. At the same time, I am not ashamed of it. If anybody wants to know, I am happy Favorite Book: The to share it with them. You’ve also been involved with a number of charities including the HIV AIDS Foundation and the Dream Foundation. Was there a particular reason why you gravitated towards those charities? Elizabeth Taylor HIV AIDS Foundation does incredible work! Before Elizabeth, people were dying of AIDS. Because of her, people are living with HIV. There’s still a lot of work that must be done. Women and children and the non-profits that address them, are of particular importance and close to our hearts. I serve as the global ambassador for Athletes and Entertainers for Kids and 911 for Kids. For the past quarter century, I’ve worked with a woman named Elise Kim who is the founder and we have been hosting a mother mentor program where we mentor young teenage girls who are in crisis pregnancy situations. Its just been incredible to experience these young girls who strive and prosper and achieve their goals despite the challenges in their lives. And again, education is critical to me when we look at so many of the devastating challenges around the world. Child exploitation, sexual slavery, human trafficking…. If we give children an extraordinary education with a good solid foundation, it can help make them less vulnerable to these exploitations and give them more opportunities. So those are areas that are close to my heart. You had a very close relationship with Elizabeth Taylor. How did that come to be and what was it that connected the two of you? We met through mutual friends and family. I was instantly drawn to her, of course. I felt that I had been mentored by her throughout my entire life just by reading and knowing about her. You can always buy some vegetarian hot dogs and burgers from the supermarket, but your guests will really appreciate something delicious that you have created for them. I asked a vegetarian, a vegan and a guy who knows a lot about herbs what deliciousness they might serve to their guests who don’t eat meat and they came up with home-made tofu vegetable sliders, grilled balsamic glazed tofu and grilled asparagus. These dishes provide interesting alternatives to store-bought vegetarian products. Bhavani Jaroff, the founder of iEat Green, LLC, provided the veggie slider recipe. I met her at the Port Washington Farmers’ Market where she was representing Slow Food Huntington, part of an international movement devoted to creating a more sustainable and nourishing food system. When it comes to vegetarian eating, Jaroff is very busy, providing chef services, presenting educational demos and hosting “iEat Green with Bhavani,” a weekly radio show on the Progressive Radio Network. Jaroff’s tofu vegetable sliders combine wholesome ingredients such as brown rice and tofu with lots of vegetables, herbs and spices. A nice feature of this dish is that the sliders can be baked ahead of time and frozen until the big day. Just defrost and heat them on the grill. Jay Astafa is a vegan, which means he avoids all animal-based foods— that includes eggs and dairy products. (This depends on how sweet you like it; if you like it sweeter use one tablespoon or more). 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 2 cloves of garlic smashed, a pinch of thyme, oregano, rosemary and marjoram. (Feel free to use any of your favorite herbs or leave them out completely if you wish.) Directions You can cut the tofu anyway you like. I like to cut it into triangles or rectangles. For triangles, cut the tofu in half diagonally. Now take the two tofu triangles and cut them into three triangles each. For rectangles, cut the tofu width-wise into six pieces. Combine all the marinade ingredients in a mixing bowl. I like to marinade the tofu in an eight by eight inch baking pan. Pour the marinade over the tofu. Marinade the tofu for at least an hour. Turn it halfway through. The longer you marinade it the better! When the tofu has marinated take the tofu out and set it aside. Strain the marinade to remove the garlic. Preheat a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the marinade mixture to the saucepan. Bring it to a boil. You want to keep it on a medium simmer. Cook the marinade for about 10 minutes until it starts to thicken and look like a glaze. For grilled tofu, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. When hot, place the tofu on the grill. Grill the tofu one to two minutes per side and then turn it 90 degrees to form cross-hatch grill marks. As the tofu is grilling, brush it with the balsamic glaze.
