The joint program also will provide treatment and educational and research services that enhance patient access to specialized surgical treatments with coordinated patient care. CHoR will open a new pediatric emergency room on the MCV Campus in the fall of 2010. This new rainforestthemed emergency room will have its own dedicated entrance, waiting room and treatment rooms. The facility is designed to meet the needs of children and their families and includes: • 12 exam rooms • A dedicated pediatric radiology suite • A children’s reading center in the waiting area CHoR’s pediatric emergency room is the only one in Central Virginia to offer 24-hour access to all pediatric specialists including trauma, surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, etc., and 24-hour access to an on-call dentist. It is part of VCU Medical Center, which is the only designated Level One Trauma Center in Central Virginia in recognition of the high level of specialty care provided 24 hours a day. Pediatric Emergency Room: 804-828-9111 Child Protection Team: 804-628-4020 "Virginia's two major academic medical centers are collaborating our clinical expertise, advanced technology and research to extend the surgical care for children and adults with congenital heart disease to a coordinated, collaborative level," said R. Edward Howell, vice president and CEO, University of Virginia Medical Center. VCU and UVA officials said the program also will enhance the organizations' ability to attract and retain high quality health care providers and translational research efforts. "We are excited about this agreement because it provides a formal framework for VCU and UVA to collaborate our shared goal to provide outstanding pediatric heart surgical care to children and families," said John Duval, CEO of MCV Hospitals, VCU Health System. Dr. Irving L. Kron, a renowned thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, will work collaboratively with the management of UVA and VCU to provide overall medical direction for the joint program. Dr. James Gangemi, a distinguished pediatric thoracic and cardiothoracic surgeon, will serve as surgical medical director for the program. Referring physicians and patients or their families will be able to meet with Dr. Gangemi for specialized congenital heart surgical care consultation. Surgical care will be provided at VCU and UVA depending on the patient needs. " For more information about the Virginia Congenital Cardiac Consortium, call 628-HRTS (4787). Clinical Updates and New Programs NEW! Severe Asthma Clinic Children with asthma are often referred to a pulmonologist and an allergist for evaluation and management. CHoR has developed a Severe Asthma Clinic to address this need. The Clinic will offer expert allergy and pulmonary assessments to all patients. The ability to combine two clinics into one setting will facilitate the care of children with chronic asthma and decrease the time commitment required from families, resulting in less time away from school for the child and less time away from work for the caregiver.
