Updates on Major Projects

FCT performance – following the regional FCT data forum in April and the National FCT Forum in August, CCN will be engaging
with DHB FCT leads and cancer managers later in November to discuss ongoing improvements. These discussions are being
driven by the following key messages from the Ministry:
o Focus your efforts – focus on large volume tumour streams, using your data to drive the focus, prioritising actions.
o Ensure a mutual interest in shared care- agreed policies and timeframes for patients moving between DHBs.
o Reviewing breaches – reporting of delay codes, analysing breaches, sharing this with clinical teams.
o Pacing the pathway – agreeing pathway timeframes across services and tumour streams.
o Escalating protocols for potential breaches – regular reviews with service leaders/managers, action plans.
o Know where your patients are –streamlined referral routes, clinician triaging, FCT tracking.


CCN currently in discussion with the Ministry re timing of the next two tumour standards for review
The Ministry are re-setting the national tumour stream programme and are currently engaging with the national chairs of the
tumour stream groups on work plan priorities including MDM prioritisation guidance, follow-up & surveillance guidance and a
review of the standard documents themselves.

Multi-Disciplinary Meeting (MDM) Development - CCN has completed a project to identify clinician resourcing requirements
to support the MDMs to inform DHB business cases to address any additional requirements for existing or
new MDMs and additional service improvement opportunities. The report is awaiting endorsement from the regional
COOs/GMs group. In addition the Ministry have completed the work to develop national business processes, system and data
requirements to support MDMs and this has been circulated to DHBs in the region. The Ministry and network managers will
meet in December to plan how the gap analysis work will be progressed in the New Year (current state versus future state).

He Anga Whakaahuru - CCN Supportive Care Framework - CCN has launched the implementation friendly version of the
Framework and facilitated a regional train the trainers workshop to support implementation across the region. Resources can

Regional Psychological and Social Support Services Initiative - roles are now in place and local and regional meetings are
ongoing to develop the services and how these will integrate with existing services.

NZ Survivorship Model – CCN partnered with the Cancer Society NZ and Cancer Nurses College to facilitate a national
workshop in November to discuss the development of a NZ Survivorship Framework. Ongoing conversations will be had at the
upcoming Psycho-oncology NZ conference in Wellington at the end of November

National Bowel Screening Programme - national roll-out will commence with HVDHB and WaiDHB as the first DHBs in 2017;
timeframes for other DHBs have been proposed and are in the process of being confirmed. The region is currently discussing
the positioning and functions for the proposed Bowel Screening Regional Coordination Centre.

Ministry funded FCT Projects - The following projects to support DHBs to meet the 62 day target, implement the tumour
standards and address equity, are underway and will be delivered during 2015-18:
o CCN - Priority Cancer Pathways Implementation Project
o CCDHB/HVDHB/WaiDHB - Emergency Presentation of Colorectal Cancer
o CCDHB/HVDHB/WaiDHB - Development and Implementation of a Pacific FCT Plan
o MDHB - Secondary Services Pathways Development
o TDHB - Defining the Uro-oncology Patient Pathway (completed)
o WhaDHB – Individual cancer follow up plans (completed)
CCN is proposing to host a regional forum early 2017 where progress on these projects will be shared.

Kia Ora e te Iwi - CCN is partnering with the Cancer Society to plan for the delivery of the Kia ora e te Iwi programme (living
with cancer) across the Central Districts Division. Planning for a regional facilitator training hui is currently underway.

Palliative Care / End of Life Care – the Central Region Palliative Care Network are currently engaging with the clinical networks
and executive groups in the region to identify specific palliative care initiatives that would benefit from a regional approach
and the appropriate infrastructure to deliver these from 2017/18 onwards.

National Nursing Standards for Antineoplastic Drug Administration - CCN is partnering with the Cancer Nurses College to
undertake a project to identify the current usage of closed systems for administration of chemotherapy drugs in DHBs and
implications of implementing closed systems for DHBs that do not currently meet the standard. A closed system drug transfer
device is a drug transfer device that mechanically prohibits the transfer of environmental contaminants into the system and
the escape of hazardous drug or vapour concentrations outside the system.

Anti-neoplastc Drug Administration Course – this training course is in place across the region for chemotherapy nurses and an
evaluation is nearing completion. Phase 2 of the project is to roll relevant components of the training programme to other
professional groups involved in the chemotherapy space.

CCN Governance Group – the governance structure for the network has been reviewed and a new structure has been agreed.
Nominations from various groups are being sought with a view to holding the first meeting of the group in Dec 2016.
