Sample Protocol
Pump Used: PM025: 270 ml x 4 ml/hr (dual; 2 ml/hr/site)
(2) 5 inch ON-Q® Soaker® catheters
Drugs in Pump: Local anesthetic of physician’s choice.

Catheter Placement: Two catheters are placed, one on each side of the midline in the rectus subfascial space. Each catheter is
threaded under the fascia with an 8 inch ON-Q introducer needle in 3 to 4 passes.

Alternative Catheter Placement: Place introducer needle with sheath retrograde from inside the upper abdominal flap and
through the skin of the upper abdomen. Remove the needle and place the catheters through the sheath anterograde from
outside in. Then pull the sheath out over the catheter. Tunnel along the introducer needle and sheath from just below the level
of the umbilicus to the upper abdomen (on each side) in the rectus subfascial position. Remove the needle and place the
catheter through the sheath. Remove the sheath.
Postoperative Bolus Technique: A bolus dose of local anesthetic may be administered with consideration given to total daily
dose delivered and patient’s clinical status.

Wound Closure and Catheter Securement Technique: The catheters are secured with Steri-Strips™ and coiled under an
occlusive dressing.

Additional Post-Op Pain Medications: Additional pain medication may be utilized including narcotics, Oxycodone (Percocet®)
and muscle relaxants (Robaxin®) PRN.

• Patient may experience loss of motor control or feeling at and around the surgical area. Physician should instruct patient on appropriate measures to
follow to avoid patient injury.

• Medications used with this system should be administered in accordance with instructions provided by the drug manufacturer. Surgeon is responsible for
prescribing drug based on each patient’s clinical status (e.g., age, body weight, disease state of patient, concomitant medication(s)).
• Vasoconstrictors such as epinephrine or adrenaline are not recommended for continuous infusions.
• Refer to ON-Q Pump Directions for Use for full instructions on using the ON-Q Pain Relief System.
