Sonohysterogram WHAT IS ULTRASOUND? Medical Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses sound waves to visualize soft tissue structures and vessels. Since it uses sound waves and not radiation to obtain images of your internal organs, it is deemed safe for use in evaluating pregnant women and patients of all ages. Ultrasound gel is used to conduct the sound waves into the body and to allow the return of those sound waves to produce a picture. Vaginal ultrasound involves the insertion of an ultrasound probe into the vagina. The tip of the probe is rounded or oblong in shape. A protective cover is placed over the probe, which is then lubricated to ease insertion and provide better contact with your body for improved image quality. The probe is inserted into the vagina by the sonographer, or you may be asked to insert it yourself. It is inserted much like a tampon would be inserted. During the sonohysterogram, saline (salt water) is injected through a small catheter into the cervix to better visualize the endometrial lining within the uterus. HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR PROCEDURE: You must have a referring physicians order. The physician’s office may fax the order to our facility prior to your appointment. Please bring a list of your medications with you. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARRIVE: All patients must register 15-30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam appointment time. We will make every attempt to start your procedure on time. However, due to unpredictable circumstances in our procedures, we are sometimes delayed. We appreciate your patience and thank you ahead of time. A blood drawn pregnancy test must be performed within 24 hours prior to the sonohysterogram. To be able to have this procedure, the pregnancy test results must be negative and the patient is not to have sexual intercourse within the 24 hour period. RECOVERY / HOME: It is preferable for you to have an escort to drive you or pick you up from the procedure. After the procedure, you may experience some uterine cramping. The radiologist will interpret the exam and send the results to your physician.
