Music by 14th century Italy’s Greatest Composer
One of the two known images of Francesco Landini (c.1325-1397) is an illuminated capital at the beginning of one of his songs contained in the “Squarcialupi Codex, ” where he is pictured playing his organetto and wearing a laurel

Laudae – devotional, non-liturgical hymns – based on music borrowed from
Landini, and serving to stress the fine line dividing the sacred from the secular
during the 14th century.
The music itself is melodious as only an Italian can make it – the language
seems to have been specially made for singers – and yet there is innovation
here; Landini’s development of the madrigale in particular demonstrates his
originality and amply justifies his reputation as a performer capable of charming the birds from the trees!
The other known image of Landini can still be seen today on the walls of San
Lorenzo in Florence, the church where he was organist. It is his tomb-stone,
rediscovered in the 19th century and erected in a place of honour, as befits
the finest Italian composer of his day.
