The music itself is melodious as only an Italian can make it – the language seems to have been specially made for singers – and yet there is innovation here; Landini’s development of the madrigale in particular demonstrates his originality and amply justifies his reputation as a performer capable of charming the birds from the trees! The other known image of Landini can still be seen today on the walls of San Lorenzo in Florence, the church where he was organist. It is his tomb-stone, rediscovered in the 19th century and erected in a place of honour, as befits the finest Italian composer of his day.
