A bunch of 15-year-olds in high school make their first experiences with love, kissing and
sexuality, coming together and drifting apart. The film follows the adolescents over a
three-year period, focusing on the relationship between Jonas and Agnete, which is made
difficult by misconceptions, Agnete's interest for philosophy, Jonas's friend Toke, her
father's mental illness and Jonas's own indecision regarding his feelings for her. The film
was actually shot over three years, so that the performer's mental development follows
the physical and is in away a continuation of the Tree of Knowledge.

Director’s Biography
One of the most important Danish directors of the last three decades and
one of Danish cinema's few acknowledged auteur, Malmros took his
inspiration from the French new wave in general and Truffaut in
particular. He started as a self-taught director and debuted with En
Mærkelig Kærlighed (1968), an amateur film. His career got going with
the largely self-financed Lars Ole, 5c (1973) which, like his next films, was
based on his own childhood experiences. His flair for depicting the pains
and bittersweet troubles of early adolescence raised him to the status of
a leading director in Denmark.

The film is a fictional portrayal of school days in 1950s. The film follows a classroom of
teenagers, at their two final years of grade school, who experience the age of puberty. The
youngsters are struggling to understand their physical, mental and emotional
developments, which are usually faced by teenagers during their adolescence. As the
group passes into adolescence, gradually the most popular girl becomes an outcast, for
trivial reasons that she never understands. The film was actually filmed over two years so
we see the children grow in to adolescence. Robert Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun. ‘The
Tree of Knowledge’ is the truest and most moving film I have ever seen about the
experience of puberty… It is also one of this year's best film on any subject.

In Sorrow and Joy filmmaker Johannes and his wife, school teacher Signe, experience the
biggest sorrow and misfortune one can ever imagine. Nevertheless, in all the
hopelessness they must try to reach for mutual and mature love in order to continue life
after death. It is an autobiographical and retrospective film about a tragic event that
changed life of Malmros, the Director of this film. The film demonstrates what happened
before and after the day in February 1984 when his wife suffering from a psychotic state
killed their nine months old daughter at their home. This is his most personal film to date.
Olaf Moller wrote in FilmComment, New York: With Sorrow and Joy he has created one of
the most shattering and elevating expressions of love in film history.

Samba, his elder brother, suddenly vanishes from the village, Adama decides to set off in
search of him. Accompanied first by Abdou, a tragically lucid griot, then by Maximin, a
street urchin who is his own negative twin, he crosses a Europe in the grip of war. We're in
