Dr. Jennifer Voges, Director of Bands, is in her seventeenth year of teaching and begins her fifth year in Yoakum and second as Director of Bands. The Yoakum Bands have thrived under her direction and she is thrilled to welcome two new faces to the Yoakum Band family! Prior to coming to Yoakum, Dr. Voges was a band director in the Fort Bend and Alvin Independent School Districts. She has also held teaching positions at Texas Tech University, Eastern New Mexico University, and Northern Arizona University. Dr. Voges holds the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Texas Tech University, the Master of Music Degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, and the Bachelor of Music (Education) degree from Texas Tech University. Dr. Voges was born and raised in New Braunfels, Texas. She attended New Braunfels High School where she received numerous awards for her horn playing including being named to the Texas All-State Band. She now lives in Shiner, TX with her husband Travis, chocolate lab Mocha, and twin kittens Lucy and Ethel. Mr. Waylon Johnson, Assistant Band Director, is in his seventh year of teaching and begins his first year as Assistant Band Director/JH Head Director for Yoakum ISD. Prior to coming to Yoakum, Mr. Johnson was a band director at Lyford CISD in Lyford, Texas. Under his direction the Lyford Middle School Band earned its first sweepstakes in over twenty five years. Mr. Johnson has earned many awards for his work with the middle school band. The Lyford Band program grew from 30 students to over 300 in the five years he was there. The Lyford marching band also got its first superior division in marching band in over twenty seven years. Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Music (Education) from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He studied Saxophone under James Warth, and performed with numerous ensembles such as the Wind Ensemble, Jazz band, and the Javelina Marching Band. Mr. Johnson was born in Coleman, Texas and raised in Victoria, Texas. When he is not working Mr. Johnson spends time traveling, fishing, and spending time with his two dogs Kairi and Harley. Mr. Jordan Taylor, Assistant Band Director, is in his third year of teaching and begins his first year as Assistant Band Director/Director of Percussion for Yoakum ISD. Mr. Taylor has a Bachelor of Music Education and a Certificate in Percussion Performance from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. At Appalachian State University, he was an active member of Phi Mu Alpha, serving as choir director and president. He performed as a percussionist in the U.S. and in several European countries as a student and was a member of several collegiate ensembles. Jordan Taylor hails from Newland, North Carolina, and has served students in NC and Texas teaching band and orchestra. Mr. Jordan Taylor is a passionate musician, educator, composer, and conductor, and is eager to share his abilities with students in the Yoakum ISD. He enjoys golf and being outdoors in his free time and resides nearby in Cuero, Texas.
