Shawn Kelley is a teacher, composer, and performing artist currently serving the
community of Cherry Creek Charter Academy as 2-8 Director of Bands and
General Music. Prior to his appointment at CCA, Mr. Kelley attracted regional
curiosity when he was selected as K-12 Director of Bands and General Music for
Manzanola School District 3J where, in his first year of tutelage, he doubled the
size of the junior-senior high school band program, retained every sixth-grade
student who participated in the year prior to his arrival, recruited 100% of the
fifth-grade class for participation in band, and increased clinic ratings for the first
time in seven years. He has also assisted several nationally and internationally
renowned band programs in adjunct faculty and student teaching capacities,
including the award-winning Dobyns-Bennett High School Marching Band in
preparation for successful competitive performances at the 2008 Bands of
America Grand Nationals Marching Band Competition and the nationallyrecognized Maryville Intermediate School Wind Ensemble before premiering as
the first ever sixth-grade band to perform at the invitation-only Midwest
International Band and Orchestra Clinic. While completing undergraduate
study, Mr. Kelley served as Assistant Director of Bands for the Episcopal School
of Knoxville as well as private instructor and marching band field technician for
numerous public secondary schools in the eastern region of Tennessee.
As an artist, Mr. Kelley currently performs with the Cathedral Brass Quintet in
professional musical engagements throughout the Front Range of Colorado. He
has enjoyed copious professional performance opportunities, including
appearances with Grammy Award winner Doc Severinsen, the Charlie Daniels
Band, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, the Knoxville Wind Symphony, the
Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band, the University of Tennessee Wind
Ensemble, and the University of Tennessee’s prestigious “Pride of the
Southland” Marching Band, with whom he performed for former President
George W. Bush in his second inaugural parade, the Irish public in Dublin’s
official Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, and hundreds of thousands of fans at
numerous NCAA sporting events throughout the country.
Praised in peer reviews for employing “ingenious compositional techniques,”
Mr. Kelley’s original works have begun to attract attention as well, having been
performed throughout the United States and Europe. His piece Urban Suite,
published by Cimarron Press and premiered by faculty at the Eastman School of
Music, was selected for use in the 2010 International Tuba and Euphonium
Conference Quartet Competition and was a finalist for the 2010 Harvey Phillips
Award for Excellence in Composition, an internationally-recognized honor for
composers of new music for tuba and euphonium bestowed by the International
Tuba and Euphonium Association. Urban Suite is also featured in a new
recording production by the Eufonix Quartet entitled Brink.
Shawn Kelley graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee with
a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. He enjoys spending time with his
family, hiking, cooking, photography, soundboard operation, reading, sports,
and exercising his German-language skills with gracious fluent members of the
CCA community.
