rvcca rts THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN YOUR BACKYARD 2014-2015 SEASON The Other Mozart TUESDAY • JANUARY 27 • 2015 r v c c a r t s . o r g theatre at rvcc • branchburg, nj • box office 908-725-3420 The Other Mozart written and performed by Sylvia Milo directed by Isaac Byrne The Other Mozart is a play about Nannerl Mozart, the sister of Amadeus. It tells the true story of this prodigy, a keyboard virtuoso and composer, who as a child toured through all of Europe performing with her brother, to equal acclaim, but who faded away and left behind nothing of her own. The show is set in, on and underneath its costume: a stunning dress some eighteen feet in diameter, which spills over the entire stage. Original music was composed for instruments Nannerl knew intimately, such as clavichords, music boxes, and bells, as well as teacups, fans, and other ordinary objects that might have captured her imagination. With the opulent beauty of the dress, the sweet smells of perfume, and the clouds of dusting powder rising from the stage, the performance creates a multi-sensual experience and transports the audience into a world of outsized beauty and delight — but also of overwhelming restrictions and prejudice. There, in communion with the audience, this other Mozart at last tells her story SYLVIA MILO (Nannerl Mozart) Originally from Warsaw, Poland, Sylvia is a graduate of New York University and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute (assistant to Robert Castle). Former member of the BATS Repertory Company at the Flea Theater in NYC. In New York she has performed at such theaters as the Flea, La Mama, Ontological-Hysteric, Theatre For the New City, and Dixon Place. Among her favorite stage roles: Hamlet in Hamlet – an all-female version of the play, which she adapted and directed herself; Sylvia in Seating Arrangements co-written by Sylvia, directed by Eric Pold of Gob Squad for the Flea Theatre; Ophelia in The Ophelia Landscape - an experimental production with Mira Furlan at the Mark Morris Center; and Bob Dylan on the streets of New York, in The West Village Fragments by Peculiar Works. Sylvia is also a violinist (playing acoustic and electric violins) and a composer, and she often uses her music skills in acting. She studied classical music in Poland, then jazz at Milton Academy, and at NYU with Mike Richmond, and studied composition with Klaus Sinfelt. Playing in various rock, jazz, avant garde bands, she has performed at NYC venues including Irving Plaza, The Knitting Factory, Galapagos, Webster Hall, CBGB’s and Joe’s Pub. She composed scores for Natasa Trifan dance company at the Merce Cunningham Studio as well as other dance and theater productions, and her solo electric violin score for the play, Cinnamon Moths, was acclaimed in Backstage as “stunning, to say the least.” The Other Mozart was presented by ALL FOR ONE THEATER FESTIVAL in New York City 2013, from there it has toured in Europe (including Mozart Wohnhaus in Salzburg, Austria), and in the US, including a critically acclaimed off-broadway run at HERE Arts Center in NYC.
