D AY TO N P H I L H A R M O N I C D E B U T S RESOLUTION as a Samaritan Breast Center Fundraising Event By Jane Grant Tougas Supporters of Samaritan Breast Center shared a unique experience October 10, 2007, at Dayton’s Schuster Performing Arts Center. The Dayton Philharmonic premiered Resolution, a deeply personal work of art composed by Steven Winteregg especially for the orchestra. Winteregg created Resolution in tribute to his wife Candy, Good Samaritan Hospital’s medical librarian, as she faced the challenges of breast cancer. Steven Winteregg, a much-honored composer, is dean of the School of Humanities, as well as professor of composition, at Cedarville University. Both Winteregg and Philharmonic music director, Neal Gittleman, spoke with guests at a reception before the exclusive performance. Winteregg pledged his honorarium and a portion of the royalties from his composition to the Breast Center. “Resolution begins during the time before Candy’s diagnosis,” Winteregg explained to the group, “and proceeds into the shock of the news and periods of panic, denial and depression. It progresses through the struggles of treatment and finally ends with some sense of acceptance.” Steven Winteregg composed “Resolution” in tribute to his wife, Candy, to document their journey with breast cancer. The Wintereggs mingled with guests over coffee and dessert after the performance. “I talked with Steve about his composition and how his feelings were reflected in the piece,” remembers guest Lee Tougas. “Speaking from a male perspective, I felt his emotion in the prominent role of the trombone and cello instruments throughout the composition. It was a profoundly moving experience.” Plans are in the works to release the Dayton Philharmonic’s performance of Resolution on CD. A pre-performance reception held on the Lodge Level allowed guests to easily flow into their seats to enjoy the Winteregg composition.
