Composition Competition 2015
The Berlin-based Artemis Quartet is considered one of the leading quartets of today. Contemporary
music plays an important part in the quartet's artistic work, not least in order to strengthen the
presence of new music in established repertoire; composers such as Mauricio Sotelo, Jörg Widmann
and Thomas Larcher have written works for this ensemble. The Artemis Quartet will be the first
quartet to create its own composition competition. This competition's principal goals are to provide
composers with the incentive to write, as well as to develop the repertoire for the string quartet. The
Artemis Quartet Composition Competition will take place every three years.
Eligibility
This competition is open to composers of all ages. Members of the jury, their direct relatives and
spouses are not eligible. Each composer may only submit one work.
Requirements
The submission should be a work written for string quartet (two violins, one viola, one violoncello).
This composition should be a concert piece (i.e. one which requires no additional technical support).
It must be unpublished, which means that it shall neither have been publicly performed, nor
broadcast or published; it shall not have been printed, reproduced or distributed in other ways.
Furthermore, the work shall not have been, or shall not be, submitted or presented to any other
competition. The duration of the piece should be between fifteen and twenty minutes.
Jury
The Artemis Quartet (Vineta Sareika, Gregor Sigl, Friedemann Weigle and Eckhart Runge) as well as
the composer and clarinetist Jörg Widmann.
Awards
First Prize:
5000 Euro and a public performance of the piece, given by the Artemis Quartet on the 27th of
January 2016 in the Chamber Music Hall of the Philharmonie in Berlin, followed by additional
performances at venues such as the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Wigmore Hall in London and the Alte
Oper in Frankfurt. The composition will also be published by a music publisher.
Second Prize:
3000 Euro – the Irene Steels-Wilsing Prize
Third Prize:
2000 Euro
This competition and its monetary awards are made possible through the generous support of Ms.
Irene Steels-Wilsing, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Konzert-Direktion
Hans Adler and the Frankfurter Bürgerstiftung in the Holzhausenschlösschen.
The selection of winners shall be subject to the judgement of the jury. The jury reserves the right to
award the prizes to multiple parties, or – should this be necessary – to none. The jury's decisions are
final.
Application Procedure
First Round
The jury shall make a pre-selection based on the submitted works. These shortlisted compositions
shall be considered in the second round.
Second Round
The compositions selected for the second round shall be used as material for an open workshop, to
take place on the 4th of October 2015 in the Universität der Künste Berlin's Joseph Joachim Saal, as
part of the Berlin Summer University of the Arts.
The Artemis Quartet shall play through these works in the presence of an audience before coming to
a decision. After the workshop, the First Prize winner shall have the opportunity to work on the
composition on the basis of having heard it performed by the Artemis Quartet. The final version must
be submitted by the 1st of November 2015.
Announcement of Winners
The winners of the first round shall be notified in writing by the external Project Manager. They shall
be invited to the workshop either by email or by post. The names of these winners shall remain
anonymous to the jury. The decision shall be made in May 2015.
The announcement of the winners shall take place after the public workshop.
Submission
Participants are to submit their compositions anonymously and together with the following
