Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Describe the various causes and treatment approaches to congenital
cataracts, congenital glaucoma, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, amblyopia,
esotropia, exotropia and cranial nerve palsies
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of the different refractive errors
and the role of the primary care physician/pediatrician in the vision
screening processes
• Identify examples of various common and uncommon pediatric ocular
problems, including leukocoria and genetic disorders that involve the eye
• Explain the differential diagnosis of the red eye including conjunctivitis,
corneal abrasion and ocular inflammatory disease
• Recognize when headache is of ocular etiology
• Demonstrate basic techniques to evaluate visual acuity at different ages,
pupillary function and intraocular structures utilizing slit-lamp biomicroscopy
and direct ophthalmoscopy

The 2013 Pediatric Ophthalmology for the Non-Ophthalmologist Symposium provides
a morning of presentations by our highly experienced and specialized ophthalmologists
followed by an afternoon of workshops in our pediatric ophthalmology service where
participants will obtain hands-on experience with various visual assessment techniques.
The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus
Service is the largest of its kind in the Chicago area. With more than 150 years of
excellence in patient care, research and education, The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary
is delighted to offer this course.
