Aim: To provide an introductory overview of brain functions of
relevance to psychoanalysis and which are directly relevant to the
focus of the conference proper. Lectures are designed for those with
little or no experience with neuroscience and yet are comprehensive
enough to be of interest to experienced participants.

This talk provides a theoretical overview of basic psychoanalytic
models of depression, including Freud's distinction between mourning
and melancholia, and Klein's theory of the depressive position.

11:15: Yoram Yovell: The nosology of mood disorders.
This lecture will review the symptoms and psychiatric categories of
mood disorders, from dysthymia to major depressive disorder and more.
We will clarify the clinical significance of the distinctions between
unipolar and bipolar mood disorders and between typical and atypical
depression. The development of diagnostic categories will be placed in
a historical context. We will also look at patterns of co-morbidity of
mood disorders, including their links to anxiety disorders, substance
use disorders and personality disorders. Finally, we will review the
association between depression and suicidality, and the links between
adult depression and a childhood history of separation, loss or neglect.

13:45: Peter Freed and Maggie Zellner: Neuroanatomy and
pharmacology of depression, part I.
This two-part lecture will provide an overview of the neuroanatomy
and neurochemistries which appear to be involved in depression. The
format will be organized around the prominent clinical symptoms of
depression and their underlying neurobiology, to help therapists make
connections between these domains. We will look at particular regions
of the brain which are dysregulated in depression, including the
amygdala, anterior cingulate, and prefrontal cortex, with an overview
of the normal functions of those regions. We will also survey the various
neurochemical systems which are dysregulated in depression, including
classical neurotransmitters, opioids, and stress hormones. A brief
overview of the basics of neurophysiology will provide a framework for
understanding the psychopharmacological treatment of depression.
