We hope you will feel at home and be stimulated and inspired during the next 3 days by the eclectic mix of science, research and development. We have 16 Ambassadors on hand to help you with any questions you may have. They are all PhD students, so will be efficient and knowledgeable!! Please feel free to make use of the café facilities around the campus. The beach is across the road, so if we have good weather you might like to take a swim. The park is situated at the rear of the Taliesin. Please find the map with all the facilities on campus, enclosed in this pack. Events On Wednesday night, ‘The Stranger In Me’ film will be shown in the Taliesin Theatre. The Conference Gala Dinner will be held in Fulton House on Thursday evening. On Friday night, The Closing Ceremony will be held in Taliesin Theatre and those who have booked excursions will visit Rhossili Bay or Oystermouth Castle afterwards. Professor Davies holds the Hodge Chair in Law at the University. He was educated at the University College of Wales Aberystwyth and Jesus College Cambridge. In 1980 he took a lectureship in Commercial Law at Cardiff and following a sabbatical period at the University of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was awarded a senior lectureship at Cardiff University. In 1995 he was called to the Bar as a distinguished academic scholar and four years later was awarded a personal chair of Swansea University when he also assumed headship of the newly formed Law Department. In 2005 he became Head of the School of Law which by then had expanded to include professional legal education and a pro bono law clinic. In 2007 he was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation and External Affairs). He currently leads on a major development for the University which involves the creation of a new £300m Science and Innovation Campus. Professor Davies is Adjunct Professor of International Commercial Law at the World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden. He is the Chair of the UK Finance and Leasing Association Business Code Monitoring Group and was special advisor to the Wales Select Committee of the House of Commons. He is the immediate past chairman of the Standing Committee for Legal Wales. He was a Commissioner of the UK Debt Commission and is a member of the Board of Trustees, Hamlyn Lecture Series. He has advised government and international government organisations on various international commercial law themes. Professor Vickram Patel Professor Patel will be giving the esteemed ‘Channi Kumar Lecture’. Professor of International Mental Health and Wellcome Trust, Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK). Joint Director of the School’s Centre for Global Mental Health (and Honorary Director of the Public Health Foundation of India's Centre for Mental Health. Professor Patel’s areas of research expertise are global mental health and contributing to the goal of improving access to mental health care and promoting the human rights of people with mental disorders worldwide. 34 Professor Marie-Paul Austin Professor Marie-Paule Austin is a mother of two. She is the St John of God Chair of Perinatal and Women’s Mental Health at the University of New South Wales, Sydney; director of the Burwood mother-baby unit; and Head of Perinatal Mental Health at the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney. She has an international reputation in the translation of research findings to policy and practice as evidenced by her leadership of the Australian beyondblue Perinatal Mental Health National Action Plan (2008) and Clinical Practice Guidelines (2011); and the 2013 International Marce Society Position Statement on psychosocial assessment and depression screening in perinatal women. Professor Austin is a chief investigator on a number of clinical and epidemiological studies in the field of Perinatal mood disorders and the developmental origins of health and disease; is currently leading an NHMRC study evaluating the impact and of the Australian National Perinatal Depression Initiative on service uptake across Australia; and a collaborator on a number of Canadian CIHR grants. Collaborator with the International Preventing Violence across the Lifespan (PreVAiL) Research Network. Professor Barlow’s areas of research expertise are the role of early parenting, evaluation of early interventions aimed at improving parenting practices and reducing the risk of child maltreatment, particularly during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Professor John Cox Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Keele University and a Visiting Professor at the University of Gloucestershire. Co- founder of the Faith, Science and Values Centre. Professor Cox has an established international reputation in the fields of Perinatal Mental Disorder, Transcultural Psychiatry and International Public Health. He is a Past President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Secretary General of the World Psychiatric Association. He was one of the founder members of the Marcé Society. Professor Cox’s areas of expertise are ethics and boundaries between Religion, Science and Medical Practice. He has been profoundly influenced by the writings of Paul Tournier. 35 Professor Louise Howard Recipient of the prestigious Marcé Medal. Louise Howard is Professor & Head of the Section of Women’s Mental Health at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and the Academic Women’s Health Centre KCL, and an Honorary Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She was an undergraduate at University College London medical school where she did an intercalated BSc in psychology while a medical student, and then worked in internal medicine gaining the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians before training in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital. She was subsequently awarded a Wellcome Trust research fellowship during which she gained an MSc in epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD which focused on the outcomes of pregnancy in women with psychotic disorders. Her research has been funded by the Wellcome Trust, MRC, ESRC, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Tommys the baby charity, and several other charitable trusts, and she has also recently been awarded an NIHR Research Professorship. She is currently Chief Investigator of an NIHR Programme Grant for Applied Research on the effectiveness of perinatal mental health services; other current research programmes include an NIHR funded study on antipsychotics in pregnancy, an MRC funded PhD studentship on obesity and mental health in pregnancy, an NIHR research programme into domestic violence and mental health, and a DH Policy Research Programme on how the NHS can optimize its response to trafficked people. She currently chairs the NICE Guideline Development Group (update) on Antenatal and Postnatal Mental Health, and was a member of the WHO guideline development group on the healthcare response to violence against women (published 2013), and more recently the NICE/SCIE guideline development group on prevention and reduction of domestic violence (published 2014). Dr Lynne Murray Research Professor in Developmental Psychopathology at the Universities of Reading, UK, and Stellenbosch, South Africa. Professor Murray areas of expertise are the effects of adversity (postnatal depression and anxiety, poverty), and infant vulnerability (early temperamental difficulty, cleft lip), on mother-infant interactions and child development. 36 Jennie Muskett Jennie Muskett has lived in London, South Africa and LA and has established an international reputation as a composer for film and television, having written scores for Miramax, Paramount, Disney, IMAX, the BBC and many more. Throughout her career, she has explored her fascination with creating empathy through music. Muskett trained at the Royal College of Music in London and soon after began a career as a cellist, playing for several named UK orchestras. Her composing career began when she was invited to write the music for a natural history documentary which, in turn, spurred further commissions in this genre. She worked for production companies such as National Geographic, Discovery, the BBC and IMAX. Inevitably Muskett’s documentary work has earned her 2 Emmys and 5 Emmy nominations. She has also composed many high profile TV scores, including the critically acclaimed BBC film, Miss Austen Regrets (2008) and Compulsion starring Ray Winston. Muskett has also been awarded 2 BAFTA nominations for her scores for the series Spooks, for which she also composed the theme, and the mini-series The State Within received two Golden Globe nominations. Over the years Muskett has made her mark in Hollywood as a composer of major studio films and television projects, and most recently has arranged and produced several recording projects, including the album “Boys Don’t Cry” for Atlantic Records’ artist Rumer. She has recently taken an extended sabbatical from her career in order to explore her interest in the benefits of music for babies and mothers during the perinatal period. Professor Steve Suomi Stephen J. Suomi, Ph.D. is Chief of the Laboratory of Comparative Ethology at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Suomi earned his B.A. in psychology at Stanford University in 1968, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology at the University of WisconsinMadison in 1969 and 1971, respectively. He then joined the Psychology faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he attained the rank of Professor before moving to the NICHD in 1983. Dr. Suomi’s present research at the NICHD focuses on 3 general issues: the interaction between genetic andenvironmental factors in shaping individual developmental trajectories, the issue of continuity vs. change and the relative stability of individual differences at multiple levels of analysis throughout development, and the degree to which findings from monkeys studied in captivity generalize not only to monkeys living in the wild but also to humans living in different cultures. Throughout his professional career Dr. Suomi has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, the most recent of which include the Donald O. Hebb Award and a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association, the Distinguished Primatologist Award from the American Society of Primatologists, and the Arnold Pffeffer Prize from the International Society of Neuropsychoanalysis. This number is used for all emergencies on University property.
