Message from the Artistic Director
There are hundreds of versions of the Cinderella story found
throughout the world’s cultures. Many of them reinforce in some
way the notion that if a girl is good, she will one day get a rich
husband. When I first read Mike Kenny’s take on the story, I was
struck by the fact that his Cinderella doesn’t wish to go to the
Ball to find a husband but simply to dance the way her father and
mother once taught her. It was delightful to find a Cinderella who
was not pining for that someday when her Prince will come.
I was also delighted by Mike’s five sweet but dim-witted rats who
re-enact the tale, acting out what happened in the abode they
shared with Cinderella. From their point of view, this orphan girl
living with her stepmother and stepsisters has fallen to the lowest
status in the house, which matches their status exactly. But life at
the bottom of the pile is great in their view. They know who they
are, they’re happy and they’re glad to make the kindly sits-in-theashes-girl a part of their circle.
In the affection they show Cinderella, Whiskers, Tail, Ears, Teeth and
Claws are keen to make her feel loved. But Cinderella isn’t a rat,
even if she shares the same status. She has lost who she is all the
while frantically attending like an invisible servant to every person’s
needs but her own. When Cinderella wishes to go to the Ball, I think
she’s wishing to return to a point in time when she knew herself
and felt her worth. And it turns out that at the Ball she meets a
Prince who feels similarly unseen and unknown.
In our season theme of wishes, dreams, and hopes, this Cinderella
wishes for one magical evening but she’s asking for something
every child deserves: to be seen, to be heard, and to matter … and,
as the song says at the end, to fit in.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S THEATRE is the largest Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) company in Canada and a significant institution in the Canadian professional theatre community. Over our 47-year history we have produced many of the most important works
that now form the canon of plays for young audiences in this country. Learning is at the
centre of everything we do and YPT is renowned as the showplace for presenting important TYA work developed elsewhere. In addition to being a producer and presenter
of theatre, YPT has also been home to a year-round Drama School for youth since 1969.
At the centre of YPT’s artistic policy is a desire to have a positive and lasting impact on
the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people in order for them
to grow into the unique and wonderful people they were born to be. At YPT we also believe that the more challenging, the more hostile, the more ‘isolated-within-the-crowd’
our world becomes, the more we need art to help us interpret the universe, connect
with each other, and imagine a better future. If adults need this, kids need it more.

back! DeAnn has performed in theatres

years of teaching, coaching and theatre
production. Thanks to the George Cedric
Metcalf Foundation, she interned at YPT
as Artistic Director under the mentorship
of Allen MacInnis. Her voice can be heard
on radio commercials, cartoons, narrating
live for Kids Film Festivals and ... hollering
at her fabulous sons Willem and Marcus.
DeAnn has also played a Piece of Seaweed,
a Crocodile and a Bear-Skin Rug. She will

The Forbidden Phoenix (YPT/Citadel

Explore and experiment with essential drama skills in the Fall and Winter sessions. The
Spring session culminates in a final presentation on the Mainstage.

Here to Hear is a joyful, interactive
play about hearing the world of music
through different ears. Amanda and
her dad don’t really agree on what
music is. She likes to collect sounds
from the audience and jam with them;
he wants to perform the beautiful
songs he has learned over the years.
Just when it looks like there won’t be
a concert at all, a surprise visitor turns
things upside down. Together with
the audience, Amanda and her father
make a song that helps their visitor
find the way home.
