May 29 – June 1, 2009 @ THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY THEATER BRIEF BACKGROUND: THIRST was the title play from a self-published volume of plays by Eugene O’Neill, written in the fall of 1913 just months after he’d been released from a sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis. THIRST was written at the same time as O’Neill wrote two other plays dealing with shipwrecks, at least partially inspired by the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. It is one of his earliest plays. THIRST received its first performance by The Provincetown Players in 1916. Louise Bryant played the Dancer, George Cram Cook played the Gentleman, and O’Neill himself played the Negro Sailor – supposedly encouraged by Bryant, with whom he was having an affair. In Bryant’s unpublished memoirs, she writes that Thirst “wasn’t much of a success,” and the play was not produced again by the Players. BROUGHT TO YOU BY: STACEY BERMAN (Asst. Costumes).
