Theater Plastique (Company) Founded in 2013 by artistic director Michelle Sutherland, Theater Plastique is an artist collective that develops original music theater, opera, plays, and music videos that we call The New American POP Theater. The collective is organized around principles of diversity, multiplicity, plasticity; the collective is diverse, multiple, plastic. With music, Theater Plastique seeks to uncover what has been culturally embedded in the American psyche through rhythm. 'American' is not just one person, vision, identity, or way of thinking; it is multiple weaving over, under, resting beside. The collective creates a creative space for this multiplicity to emerge. Theater Plastique's first production, Gertrude Stein SAINTS! premiered at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club as part of the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival. The production won two awards: Overall Excellence in Music and Overall Excellence in Directing (Michelle Sutherland). Gertrude Stein SAINTS! was presented again in NYC at Abrons Art Center, June 12-‐28th, 2014. The collective is currently developing new work using jazz techniques such as improvisation, call and response, and jam session as the basis for collaboration and exploration. Theater Plastique's second in The POP Trilogy of operatic performance celebrating American poetry, Emily Dickinson OUTER SPACE!, was workshopped at the Fury Factory in San Francisco before coming to The Bushwick Starr.
