L I TTLE NUGG E TS F RO M JE WE L BOX THE ATR E By Dale Wasserman October 3 - 27, 2013 Directed by Ben Hall Jewel Box Theatre An Oklahoma Tradition jewelboxtheatre.org Chuck Tweed ~ Production Director James Gordon ~ Box Office Manager 3700 North Walker Oklahoma City, OK 73118-7031 405-521-1786 Get free tickets Details on page 9 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 PAGE ‘ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST’ First presented at Jewell Box in 1983, ‘ Cuckoo ’ s Nest ’ was the second choice on the ballot for this season as chosen by our patrons. The idea for the novel came to author Ken Kesey while he worked the graveyard shift as an orderly at a mental facility. From the novel came the play, followed by the Academy Award-winning movie. Oklahoma native Will Sampson, who died in 1987, was cast as Chief Bromden in the movie. An electrifying evening of theatre, the eclectic group that inhabits the State Hospital sets the backdrop for a lethal confrontation between a con artist and the head nurse. This show is rated PG13 for language and intense situations. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST A CHRISTMAS CAROL A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM THE LION IN WINTER YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU LITTLE NUGGETS 4 VOLUME 3, ISSUE PAGE 3 5 Q & A with Ben Hall Director, ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ 1. What about this story had the biggest impact on you? ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ is about conformity to society’s norms and the consequences of being different ~ by birth or by choice. As a child of 60’s, that theme has always interested me and it’s presented in this story in such an interesting, entertaining and, ultimately, moving way. 2. Do you have a favorite character? I’m not sure I have a distinctly favorite character, but maybe Chief Bromden. Although I love McMurphy and Ratched and all of the guys, Bromden figures so prominently in the book from which the play came, he stands out in my mind as the one telling the story. 3. With a mostly male cast, how do you work on them bonding? The first thing I did to help them bond was try and cast a group of actors who I believed wanted to be part of a truly collaborative effort. After that, mostly luck. 4. Is the theme still relevant today? Why? Why not? The theme is perhaps even more relevant today, although in a slightly different way. We have become a society that values style above substance. Political correctness over truth. Civil words over actually being civil. It is a false focus on what is important that, I believe, grows in part out of the pressure to conform. 5. How were you introduced to the book, play, or movie? I saw the movie when it first came out, and loved it. Shortly after, I got the book and read it, and enjoyed it as well, although it is a very different story. Some years later, I got hold of the play, read it, and decided I wanted to direct it, which I did for the first time about 15 years ago. Chris Rodgers and Emily Etherton were the two leads then also, and did a great job with it even though they were far too young. 6. Kesey was disappointed that Gene Hackman was not cast as McMurphy, as opposed to Jack Nicholson. Any thoughts? The role in the movie really defined Nicholson as an actor, and has become very closely identified with him. After reading the book, however, I could easily see Gene Hackman play the character ~ it would have given us an entirely different view of McMurphy the man. 7. Sum up the play in one word. I would say maybe ‘gut-wrenching.’ (Is that cheating?) Maybe ‘cautionary.’ LITTLE NUGGETS VOLUME 3, ISSUE PAGE 3 6 Theatrically Tweed SMOOTH AS BUTTA!! Our first show went so well with no tickets!
