LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ONE AND ALL!
2014 has been a remarkable year at PICT Classic Theatre! Our plays have brought
laughs, tears, gasps, few gaffes, suspense (literally waiting for the shoe to drop)
and, at the end of every show, cheers and rave reviews. As another beloved Dickens
character would say, “Bless us, everyone,” and we are truly blessed by the dedication
to excellence exhibited by our actors, directors, designers, production team, box office
staff and our many volunteer ushers who greet with a welcoming smile.
As with Pip, PICT Classic Theatre is on a journey. This year was our first season of
plays chosen by Alan Stanford. His mastery of direction and acting was evident. Our
record-breaking audiences, including over 1,400 school children attending Macbeth,
would suggest that PICT’s journey is headed in the right direction. It will not be
without some trial and error, some bumps in the road, some impatience and waiting,
and some challenges to make ends meet. We are waiting not just for Godot, but for
the generosity of a Magwitch, too! I welcome your feedback on how our journey is
progressing, and encourage you to write a happy ending to this season’s book through
your year-end contributions.
I suspect, too, that you will agree with me that we should flip Dicken’s title when
describing PICT Classic Theatre: let’s say “Expect Greatness.” I do. Every member of
PICT Classic Theatre and our family of actors do. We have set a high bar for ourselves,
because we know that you come to every show with great anticipation.
Next season will soon be here. We are starting the season in February with a world
premiere by an inspiring Pittsburgh playwright at a new downtown venue, followed
by a musical favorite in April (yes, we can sing for our supper, too)! UnCommon
Pleas will return next March for an evening of lawyerly antics and revelry, premised
on The Tempest. Then we will return to Stephen Foster Memorial for Ayckbourn,
Shaw, Shakespeare, Dickens, and a brilliant, contemporary Irish playwright. It is an
all-star line-up!
So, please relax and enjoy the holidays. Get rested. Then come back in February with
your family, friends, and colleagues for more provocative and entertaining theatre,
when the Saints (and Sinners) come marching on our stage! Thank you for your
attendance and support this year.

NOTES FROM THE DRAMATURG

Growing up is rarely a solitary experience. Friends, family, coworkers and acquaintances
all play significant roles in shaping the people we eventually become—even if the role
they play in our lives only determines the kind of person we choose not to be. Life’s
largely a sifting process—with people picking and choosing which advice to follow and
which to avoid on their own path towards self-discovery.
And there are few better examples of the influence people can have than Great
Expectations. It’s a story all about inheritance. Financial, yes, but even more so social. It’s
about the qualities we pick up from the people surrounding us, for better or worse. It’s also
about the obligations we feel towards those who raise us, which inheritances we choose to
collect on, and which inheritances are better left ignored.
Dickens is a master of the coming-of-age tale, and one of the places his talent shines
most is in his ability to draw clear lines of influence for his characters. Rather than let
protagonists mature in a vacuum, he provides them with a number of role models—both
positive and negative—to help or hinder them along their way. And, as in good drama,
Dickens also reveals character development through interaction. Audiences are able to
track changes in character opinions and demeanor—or lack thereof—with each new voice
present in the character’s life.
The difficult decision, however, is often determining whom to listen to. Throughout Great
Expectations, each character has their own idea of how things should be, and—whether
actively or passively—each uses the people around them to pursue their own satisfaction.
What’s more, each character is completely justified in their own eyes. They think their
vision of the future is genuinely the best one. The question is whether or not characters’
dreams align, and whether or not manipulated parties can realize the path they’re being
guided down before it’s too late.
The most striking example of this is Estella. While Pip is at least seemingly given freedom
to make his own choices on his journey towards becoming a gentleman, Estella remains a
second-class citizen simply by virtue of her sex. Her wealth is seen only as a dowry, and her
expectations are limited to becoming a bride. She’s rarely even brought up in conversation
beyond her marital status. Rather than encourage Estella to break out of the cycle she’s
inherited, however, Miss Havisham reinforces it. She trains her to break men’s hearts,
continuing to reduce Estella to a determinant of men’s happiness—or unhappiness—
rather than encouraging her to become her own woman. Havisham confounds others’
expectations, but insists on her own. The question becomes whether Estella can break out
of her influence, or if it’s already too late.

Karen Baum (Mrs.Joe/Biddy) is honored to return to PICT as a featured

Mark Conway Thompson (Aged Parent) is in his fifth production with
PICT after having previously acted in Julius Caesar and having worked on
Salomé, Our Class and Macbeth as movement consultant/choreographer.
Pittsburgh credits: Quantum Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theater, City
Theatre, Pittsburgh Playhouse, Pittsburgh Playwrights' Theater, No Name
Players, Saints and Poets, and Unseam'd Shakespeare Company. Other

James FitzGerald (Wemmick) is a featured artist for the 2014 season
and is in his seventeenth production for PICT. Recent PICT credits: Didi
in Waiting for Godot, Dr. Bradman in Blithe Spirit, Ross in Macbeth,
and Him in Woman and Scarecrow. Other Pittsburgh credits: Charles
Ives in Charles Ives Take Me Home (City Theatre), End of the Affair and

Linda Froehlich (Molly/Miss Skiffins) is making her PICT debut. She
has appeared in numerous Off Broadway productions and regional theaters.
Previous theater credits: Off-Broadway production of The Legend of
Sharon Shashanovah, the tour of Twelfth Night and Gridlock, a comedy
review written and produced by her. Film & TV credits: Saturday Night
Live, All My Children, Law and Order, and New Jack City. She has also
been featured in numerous TV and print commercials. Recently new to
Pittsburgh, Linda lives with her husband in Squirrel Hill and spends much
of her time exploring this great city.
Martin Giles (Joe Gargery) is in his thirteenth season with PICT and
most recently played Porter/Old Siward/Murderer in Macbeth. Other
PICT credits: Kenneth Pyper in Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching
Towards the Somme, Gogo in Waiting for Godot, Beautiful Dreamers
(playwright and director), Lady Windermere’s Fan, The Kreutzer Sonata,

Charity Hipple (Young Estella) is very excited to be in her first PICT
production. She has been in numerous community theater productions
including Tessie in Annie, Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol,
and Kendra in 13, The Musical. Charity is a freshman at Saltsburg High
School, and enjoys dancing and singing.
Carolyn Jerz (Young Estella) is thrilled to be making her first appearance
at PICT. She has performed regionally with Stage Right! (Greensburg),
Apple Hill Playhouse (Delmont), the Geyer Performing Arts Center
(Scottdale) and Seton Hill University. Favorite roles include Mary Lennox
in The Secret Garden, Annie in Annie, Young Fiona in Shrek (Stage Right
Theatre Company), Patrice in 13, Lucy in Narnia, Peter Pan, Puss-inBoots, and Alice in Alice in Wonderland. Carolyn is a twelve-year-old
homeschooler from Greensburg.

Mary Rawson (Miss Havisham) was recently seen at PICT as Madame
Arcati in Blithe Spirit. Previous PICT seasons include Izzie in House &
Garden, Mrs. Marchmont in An Ideal Husband, Margrethe in Copenhagen
and Pauline in Thomas Kilroy's adaptation of Chekhov's The Seagull.

Tyler Crumrine (Dramaturg) is in his first season at PICT. He is a Pittsburgh-based dramaturg and the
founding editor of Plays Inverse Press, a small press publisher of plays and play-like literature. His writing
on Irish playwright Martin McDonagh has been recognized nationally by the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, where he also studied as a New Play Dramaturgy Intensive fellow. Other dramaturgy credits
include Bricolage Production Company's In the Raw: (R)evolution new play festival and City Theatre’s 2014
Young Playwrights Festival.
George DeShetler, Jr. (Production Manager / Technical Director) is in his third season at PICT. He began
at PICT as the props master in 2012 and came on in July 2013 as production manager. Other Pittsburgh
credits: Production manager at Prime Stage Theatre and temporary staff carpenter at CMU School of
Drama. Regional credits: Arena Stage, Imagination Stage, Contemporary American Theater Festival, and
Indiana Repertory Theatre. George graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, with a BFA in
theatre design and technology.
Michael Thomas Essad (Scenic Designer) is thrilled to be back for a second season at PICT. PICT credits:
Macbeth and Lady Windermere's Fan. Pittsburgh credits: Pittsburgh Playhouse (technical director for over
130 shows and resident scenic designer for over thirty shows, e.g. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Oklahoma
and The School for Scandal), and Pittsburgh Public Theater (three years as technical director). Other credits:
Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami (six years, during which he sent several shows to Broadway), Berkeley
Repertory Theater, California Shakespeare Festival, Actors Playhouse in Miami, San Jose Repertory Company,
Asolo Theater in Sarasota (contact), and the California Theater Center in Sunnyvale, Calif. Michael has been
working as a theater professional for thirty-four years. He has designed over eighty shows. He also designs and
builds furniture for both theatrical productions and the private sector as well. Michael would like to dedicate

Cory F. Goddard (Resident Stage Manager) is in his tenth season with PICT. PICT credits: Macbeth,
Heartbreak House, Stuff Happens, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, House & Garden, Salome, In the Next Room
or the vibrator play, and the Beckett, Synge, Pinter, and Chekhov festivals, among others. Other Pittsburgh

Steve Shapiro (Sound Designer) returns to PICT after acting as Sound Designer for Lady Windermere's
Fan. He currently serves as resident sound designer and engineer for The Pittsburgh Playhouse at Point Park
University, where he has designed almost every production since his arrival in 2010, including The School for
Scandal, directed by Alan Stanford. Other credits: Over 85 productions with the Coconute Grove Playhouse
in south Florida, Palm Beach Dramaworks, Syracuse Stage, The 92nd Street Y in NYC, The Cleveland
Playhouse, The Caldwell Theater, and The George Street Playhouse. National Tours: Menopause The Musical
from 2006 to 2010, he also toured with The Ramones, The Replacements, and Pia Zadora. International
credits: Russian language premiere of The Skin of Our Teeth in Novosibirsk, Russia, and the 1995 South
American Tour of Phatom of The Opera. He also created the score composition and sound design of Alan
Ginsburg's only play, Plutonian Ode.

Alan Stanford (Director) is in his seventh season at PICT. He was for more than thirty years a principal and
leading actor with the renowned Gate Theatre, Dublin, where he recently directed his adaptation of Pride
and Prejudice. He founded Ireland's Second Age Theatre Company. PICT credits: Woman and Scarecrow,
Macbeth, Pozzo in Waiting for Godot, Blithe Spirit, Don Juan Comes Back from the War, Lady Windermere's
