OVERVIEW 10 Years of the Touriseum The 2013 museum season was marked by a very special event, with the Touriseum celebrating ten years of existence. On 15 March 2013, ten years after the opening of the museum, the Touriseum invited all former employees, trainees and partners to a celebration at the historic Trauttmansdorff Castle. This event also saw the Museum presenting and distributing its 10-year anniversary publication. The special exhibition for 2013 was also firmly rooted in the anniversary year. The Touriseum team researched the profound changes for visitors and locals in the holiday land of South Tyrol since the opening of the Museum in 2003, presenting their work at the exhibition “Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0 [Holiday 2.0]”. Year of the Museum Object Beginning in February, Ruth Engl and writer Waltraud Holzner set off through South Tyrol, visiting clubs for the elderly and sections of the association of private landlords. Visits began with a short image show by Ruth Engl about the history of tourism in the region, also presenting the tour through the Touriseum. Seniors then were encouraged, over coffee and cakes, to bring along objects and relate their encounters with tourists in their own part of the world, Waltraud Holzner recording the observations in writing. The result was a brochure of over 100 pages containing a large number of short stories, which was solemnly presented at the Touriseum on 16 November. This “Die Fremden und wir [Visitors and Us]” action represented the Touriseum’s participation in the 2013 Year of the Museum Object. Under the slogan “1000+1 Things tell a Story” the objects and their (hi)stories are to be made more accessible for visitors to experience in the museums and collections of South Tyrol. Altogether more than 40 museums and collections from all over South Tyrol took part, with some 90 actions. Evelyn Reso organised a peepshow of the objects for the year’s theme in the Museum itself. Theatre and Museum Another focus for 2013 was “theatrical” communication: visitors were treated to the street theatre “Tourism (hi)story on the go” in streets and busy open spaces, while the Museum itself offered theatrical guided tours by Ruth Engl and Mirella Mercantini as courtiers of the Empress Elisabeth on the occasion of the Long Night of the Museums (21.09.13), on “Sissi Day” (19.10.13) and on the Open Day (17.11.13). Denis Mader appeared as a “Saltner” (vineyard guard) at the autumn celebrations at Trauttmansdorff Castle. In June the Touriseum, together with the Bavarian Museum Academy, organised a convention at Goldrain Castle on the proper use of theatre and theatrical elements in museums. More details can be found under Point V.I. Conventions. Convention on “War and Tourism” With the 100th anniversary of the First World War in mind, the Touriseum, together with the Universities of Innsbruck and Trento, organised an international convention on “War and Tourism”. The results are now being used to prepare and expand the perspectives for a special exhibition in 2015 on the topic of War & Tourism. The accompanying volume for the convention will appear in May 2014. Start of redesign of Museum tour Because the Touriseum opened its permanent exhibition in 2003, the most recent ten years are of course not covered. Parts of this year’s special exhibition, “Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0”, are in fact due to be integrated into the permanent exhibition, with work to take place in winter 2013/2014. As there is no more room for the updating of the permanent exhibition, this must be realised in the last two 2 rooms of the tour, which will be compacted accordingly. The planned changes and reconstruction works began immediately on conclusion of the season. II. VISITOR NUMBERS The number of visitors to the Touriseum remained approximately the same as the previous year. With a total of 215,977 visitors, the Touriseum surpassed the 200,000-visitor mark for the eighth year in a row. One other pleasing detail was that, in its eleventh season, the Touriseum received its two millionth visitor in September. III. EXHIBITIONS Special exhibition “Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0” in the Touriseum (29.03-17.11.13) The special exhibition Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0, held in the Coach House of Trauttmansdorff Castle, ran from 29 March to 17 November 2013. Original installations by Teo Mahlknecht, the Gröden Valley artist and designer of the South Tyrol game in the Touriseum, symbolised the new trends in tourism. Interview stations by South Tyrolean filmmaker Karl Prossliner showed what happens behind the scenes in tourism. The graphic concept of the exhibition was by Gruppe Gut and texts were by Josef Rohrer. A small brochure was produced for the exhibition. Peepshow of objects in the Touriseum (28.03.-17.11.13) What sort of objects does the Touriseum collect? How large is its collection? How do the objects come to the Touriseum, and what happens to them once they get there? The answers could be found in the “Objects Peepshow” held as part of the “Year of the Museum Object” in South Tyrol. Using specially selected examples, the Touriseum showed that the objects on display in the Touriseum’s exhibitions are just a fraction of its total inventory. The exhibition, designed by Evelyn Reso, also showed which objects are of interest to a museum of tourism and what is involved in collecting and keeping museum objects. Exhibition of table brushes in Meran (19.04.-13.06.13) Heide Götz from Gütersloh in Germany collects table brushes from around Europe. She loaned some of these to the Touriseum for the exhibition “Crumbs! – Table brushes from various countries”, which could be seen from 19 April to 13 June 2013 at the Savoy Catering School in Meran. Present at the opening were the Director of the Touriseum, Paul Rösch, the curator and lender Heide Götz, Director of the Savoy Catering School Beatrix Kerschbaumer and Ruth Engl, who designed and arranged the exhibition. Waiters exhibition in Gröden Valley (01.12.12-01.04.13) With its title in three languages – “Cie ëis’a gën? Sie wünschen? Desidera? [What would you like?]” – the Touriseum exhibition on the waiting profession appeared from 4 December 2012 to 1 April 2013 in the “Tublà da Nives” cultural centre in Wolkenstein. The exhibition was held in the Touriseum in 2011 as a special exhibition and was then transferred to Wolkenstein. IV. Some 40 Museums offered special events throughout the area, admission free. The Touriseum offered an exciting museum quiz with theatrical guided tours (Ruth Engl and 4 Mirella Mercantini dressed as courtiers of the Empress Sissi), a curious new acquisition (the Vetsera blanket) and an anniversary exhibition. 19 October: Sissi Day in the Gardens and at the Touriseum Short introductions in the Deuster Room gave visitors a full overview of the stays of Empress Sissi at Trauttmansdorff Castle and the significance of these in the development of Meran as a spa town. Sissi’s courtiers (alias Ruth Engl and Mirella Mercantini) offered theatrical guided tours through the historical rooms. 27 October: Autumn in the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle With theatrical guided tours by Denis Mader dressed as an original South Tyrolean Saltner (vineyard guard), the Touriseum also participated in the autumn celebrations in the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Florist Martha Spornberger assisted visitors in making floral table decorations. 7-9 November: Convention on “War and Tourism” at the Touriseum The Touriseum at Trauttmansdorff castle, Meran, saw 23 participants from Italy, Austria, Germany, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia discuss the influence of the First World War on the development of tourism in the Alpine region. The Kaiserhof Catering School of Meran then served a buffet in the historic castle. 16 November: “The Guests and Us”: solemn closing presentation at the Touriseum The Deuster Room was completely filled with over 100 seniors from all over South Tyrol who had come to witness the solemn presentation. The result of this action, a 100-page brochure containing numerous short stories, was presented at the Touriseum on 16 November to all those who had taken part in the project. Musical accompaniment was provided by the “Junggebliebenen” seniors choir and Julia and Sybille (violin, guitar and song). Coffee and cakes were then served by the Schlossgarten restaurant in the historic rooms. 17 November: Open day delights 1200 local visitors The Touriseum opened its doors for the last visit of the year on Sunday 17 November. Numerous South Tyrolean families took the opportunity to visit the South Tyrolean Museum of Tourism. The Schlossgarten Restaurant also opened for the first time on this day. The Waldorf School demonstrated the making of felt, while the group dakapo (guitar, accordion and song) provided musical accompaniment. V. CONVENTIONS, LECTURES AND SEMINARS V.I. Conventions Theatre and Museum (6-7 June, Goldrain Castle) On 6 and 7 June 2013 museum employees, actors and educators met at Goldrain Castle for a convention organised by the Touriseum and the Bavarian Museum Academy to discuss new connections between theatre and museum. The use of theatrical elements as a means of communication has a long tradition. Scenic representations are also becoming increasingly popular as a means of publicity in the world of museums. There is no dispute that theatres and museums complement each other in a positive manner. The individual contributions and workshops at the convention provided suggestions as to how theatre and theatrical elements can meaningfully be integrated into how museums communicate. Highly different forms of combinations of the two areas were presented and discussed. 5 Alina Laura Tiews from Hamburg presented the play “Anne Bloody Mary”. Written and performed by two professional actresses, the play entertainingly presented visitors with some of the content of the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg, with direct reference to the museum objects. Rainer Wenrich of the Bavarian Museum Academy demonstrated possibilities for the financing of projects that connect theatres and museums. Together with Thomas Endl of the “Histonauts”, Josef Kiemeier of the Museum Educational Centre in Munich presented the project “Bilder drehen, Bilder verstehen [Filming and understanding pictures]”, which gives pupils the opportunity of making their own film by shooting individual pictures in the Munich Modern Art Gallery. Teacher of free theatre and actress Nicole Titus from Munich reported on her experiences with a theatre project at the Dachau concentration camp memorial. With a group of pupils she produced a play on human rights and then performed it for another class at the memorial. Skiing star and two-times Olympic winner Markus Wasmeier presented theatrical elements in his open air museum on the Schliersee Lake. Over several evenings a theatre group performed the play “Wildschütz Jennerwein” against the backdrop of the museum’s farms. Paul Peter Niederwolfsgruber, director of the Kassianibühne Percha theatre, gave a similar insight into current practice with an example from South Tyrol, the theatrical cycle of the “Seven Deadly Sins” performed at the Dietenheim Folklore Museum. There was also a report by museum tutor Brita Köhler, who takes groups of four-year old children through the Museion in Bozen in the company of a hand puppet in the shape of a caterpillar, the “Museum Caterpillar”. Finally, Touriseum Director Paul Rösch and colleague Ruth Engl also related the various theatrical elements used by the Museum for communication purposes, both inside and outside its walls. Participants could also try their hand at the theatrical forms of expression in four different workshops run by Thomas Troi of the Theatre Educational Centre in Bozen, Laura Jakschas of the “Museumfieber” group from Hamburg, Anna Beke of the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich and Angela Hundsdorfer, a drama teacher from Berlin. A humorous interlude was provided by the street theatre programme “Tourism (hi)story on the go” with Gerd Weigel, Peter Schorn and Martina Holzknecht who, sponsored by the Touriseum, toured South Tyrol for several weeks with the aim of making the local population more aware of the Museum’s content. The “Theatre and Museum” convention provided numerous suggestions and ideas for different ways of combining the two areas to make communication in museums more attractive still. The results of the convention were also published in December in a special issue of the “Südtiroler Theaterzeitung” together with the South Tyrol Theatre Association. War and Tourism (7-9 November, Touriseum, Meran) Participants from Italy, Austria, Germany, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia met at the Touriseum at Trauttmansdorff castle, Meran, to discuss the influence of the First World War on the development of tourism in the Alpine region. The convention focused on the historic area of Tyrol. The convention was also staged in preparation and expansion of the perspectives for a special exhibition in 2015. All contributions will be published in the studies of the Museum in 2014. The convention was organised beforehand by Patrick Gasser, while the scientific aspects were handled by Gunda Barth-Scalmani (University of Innsbruck) and Andrea Leonardi (University of Trento). The programme featured the following contributions and discussions: ! Freilichtmuseen, Themenwege, Friedhöfe, Klettersteige – das Erbe der Front 100 Jahre später und seine Bedeutung für den Tourismus heute. Short contribution followed by discussion with Stefano Illing (Cortina Turismo), Gabriele Crepaz (Südtiroler Marketing Gesellschaft), Tadej Koren (Fundacija Poti miru, Slovenia), Paolo Manfrini (Trentino Marketing); discussion chaired by Harald Pechlaner. 6 ! TEACHING ACTIVITIES AT THE MUSEUM For the sixth year in succession the “Travel Fever” activity programme was offered to all school years in South Tyrol. The efforts of the Touriseum to expand its teaching programme to target specific groups was further developed in 2013. The “Touri-Tour” was thus a new action conceived and aimed at primary schools whereby pupils, after a short introduction to the tourism industry, use a photo to look together for individual objects along the museum tour. The objects are an entertaining way to tell the pupils the regional history of tourism in Tyrol. All four actions offered as part of the “Travel Fever” activity programme – “Gepäckkarte”, “Mr. X bitte einsteigen”, “Die Fremden und wir” and the new action, “Touri-Tour” – were offered to both Italian and German language schools in 2013. As in all previous years since 2006, in 2013 the Touriseum opened its doors to schools two months before the actual season began. In the period from 1 February to 15 November 2013 a total of 100 school classes visited the Touriseum for a very wide variety of educational events. Antonella Russo prepared the school action “Klischee” for the “Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0” special exhibition. Ruth Engl accompanied the pupils of Class 5b of the Franz Tappeiner primary school in Meran during their appearance in the “Karamela” children’s show, which investigated the Touriseum and the tourism history of the region and was broadcast on the Rai Bozen station on 10 June. Sandra Soffiatti and Ruth Engl organised and arranged the visit of the Italian-speaking “Sissi” kindergarten from Meran with a festive backdrop for the presentation in the Touriseum of the castles made by the children. Mirella Mercantini, dressed as one of Sissi’s courtiers, gave the children a guided tour of the historic rooms. For the 2013 “Year of the Museum Object”, Ruth Engl and Waltraud Holzner conceived a special action for seniors entitled “Die Fremden und wir [Visitors and Us]”. Between 1 February and 22 May they visited nine different clubs for the elderly throughout South Tyrol, with the collected stories and objects published in a brochure and solemnly presented at the closing ceremony for the action on 16 November 2013, where they formed part of a small exhibition. Over 100 pensioners from all over South Tyrol travelled to the festive presentation: sections from the South Tyrolean association of private landlords, the “Ladies’ Wednesday Round” of the Working Group for the Care of Seniors in Bozen, members of the Wolkenstein Seniors’ Club, the Lana Seniors’ Club, the Lana Heimatschutzverein, the “Mens’ Thursday Round” of the Bozen Seniors’ Club and the Urania Meran Seniors’ Club. The 2013 teaching activities at the Touriseum were presented by the following: Waltraud Holzner, Heidemarie Holzner, Denis Mader, Renate Kauntz-Innerhofer, Antonella Russo, Mirella Mercantini, Ruth Engl. VII. SCIENTIFIC WORK VII.I. OWN PUBLICATIONS • “10 Jahre Touriseum”: the Touriseum’s own publication reviews the first 10 years of its existence in its habitual ironic tone. • “Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0”: the Touriseum published a small brochure with the exhibition texts for its anniversary exhibition. 10 • “Die Gäste und wir”: as part of the South Tyrol-wide action “1000+1 Dinge erzählen Geschichte”, the Touriseum visited clubs for the elderly and sections of the association of private landlords throughout the region. Seniors brought along objects and related their encounters with tourists in their own part of the world. The result was a brochure of over 100 pages containing a large number of short stories. • Special edition of the STV (South Tyrol Theatre Association) review on the convention “Theater und Museum”, featuring results, reports, photos and discussions. • Special edition of “Kulturelemente” magazine on the lecture series “Die Touristen – Spannende Wesen 2.0”. In: Südtiroler Erbhöfe, Menschen und Geschichten, Bozen 2013, pp. 167-177. VII.III. SCIENTIFIC INQUIRIES In 2013 the Touriseum received some 80 enquiries of a scientific and journalistic nature. They included requests from students for degree and seminar work, mainly as regards tourism, architecture, history, ethnography and economics, as well as enquiries from school pupils studying for their final examinations. Other enquiries came from journalists and authors researching tourismrelated topics. Enquiries and searches from other museums and institutions for objects and images have in general risen since the establishment of the link to the KKS database (the catalogue of South Tyrol’s cultural assets) from the new Touriseum website. Since 2012 searches for the objects in the Touriseum collection can now be carried out online. VII.IV. COLLECTION & LIBRARY The Touriseum added 1,205 objects to its collection in 2013. The new entries to the collection were predominantly donations. For the special exhibition “Urlaub_Vacanze 2.0” the emphasis was on collecting objects from the present day, with the Touriseum also addressing the question of which of today’s objects will be worth keeping for the future. A total of 1,555 objects were entered into the Adlib database by Karin Maringgele, i.e. objects already in the collection were methodically inventoried and entered into the database. In December 2013 the Touriseum had a total of 14,400 objects in its database. 11 In 2013 Evelyn Reso worked in the project group engaged in the reorganisation of the cultural assets portal, also staging two virtual exhibitions (“À la carte” and “Das Klo auf Reisen [Toilets for Travellers]”) for the new website. For this purpose the data records were translated into Italian by Sandra Soffiatti. In order to optimise the donation procedure, in 2013 Evelyn Reso also produced an information bulletin for donations. Donors are informed about what happens to the objects they provide; that the Touriseum reserves the right not to select objects that do not fit into the collection concept; and that donations are made visible to the public on the KKS portal. In 2013 the Touriseum library was expanded by altogether 127 publications. The Touriseum library now holds 4,181 books on the topic of tourism. In February 2013 Evelyn Reso, Karin Maringgele and Kathrin Pircher participated on the training course “Vom Schuhkarton in die Datenbank [From shoebox to database]” run by the Office for Audiovisual Media and used the knowledge gained to optimise the custody of photo material. LOANS The following museums and institutions borrowed objects from the Touriseum collection in 2013: Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum (permanent exhibition), Lanserhaus Eppan (special exhibition “WeinKunst – Weinland Südtirol in der Kunst”), Tublà da Nives cultural centre in Wolkenstein (full 2011 exhibition “Sie wünschen? Desidera?”), Amt für Naturparke/Naturparkhaus Drei Zinnen, Toblach, (“Lenhart” exhibition), Abteilung 42 – Museen (exhibition project “Mirabilia. Fotoreise durch 1000+1 Museumsobjekte”, Academy of the Südtiroler Sparkasse, Bozen). VII.VI. ADVISORY COUNCIL One advisory council meeting took place, on 20 September 2013. As well as a review and discussion of prospects for the current season, the main topic of the meeting was the presentation and subsequent discussion of the overall conception for the redesign of the last rooms of the permanent exhibition. The overall conception for updating the permanent exhibition was produced by Josef Rohrer and submitted to the council in advance. Josef Rohrer described the changes in terms of content for each room. Uli Prugger from Gruppe Gut illustrated the changes on the relevant plans. VIII.VII. RESEARCH PROJECT In 2013 Evelyn Reso began interviews for the construction of an archive of contemporary witnesses to the history of South Tyrolean tourism at the Touriseum. Between March and October she conducted and fully transcribed a total of 20 interviews with members of various South Tyrolean family businesses in the tourist trade. Together with the existing interviews conducted by Karl Prossliner, these interviews will form the basis of the archive of contemporary witnesses. The interview keywords will be tagged in 2014 and entered into a database to make them accessible to future Museum visitors. Some excerpts from the interviews by Evelyn Reso could be heard at audio stations in winter 2013/14 as part of the update of the Museum tour. VIII. MARKETING, PR & SOCIAL MEDIA As regards marketing, as in previous years, advertising activities by the Touriseum were considerably limited by the fact that a large part of the advertising budget (some €60,000) was diverted as a “proportion of publicity costs” to the Laimburg Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry. An agreement was made with the Botanical Gardens to take over the advertising of 12 Trauttmansdorff as an attraction outside South Tyrol and to integrate advertising with the Touriseum where this was meaningful and possible. Particularly when advertising to the local population in South Tyrol, the Gardens and the Touriseum should have equal status, however, i.e. the Touriseum should always be a fixed element in advertising for the Gardens. The Touriseum therefore in 2012 also concentrated on focusing the means available to it on a few areas, avoiding any waste of scarce resources. Advertising was thus limited to local media. In addition an attempt was made to attract media attention with an emphasis on content and on cooperations. Actions such as street theatre, exhibitions such as that on table brushes, and conventions such as “War and tourism” all heightened media interest. The most intensive media campaign in this year was once again before the Open Day held on 17 November. Patrick Gasser sent 28 press articles via the regional press office in 2013, with some 90 contributions posted and tweeted for the Touriseum’s Facebook page. In 2013 some 100 press articles appeared in local and foreign media concerning the Touriseum, the special exhibition and its other events. The Touriseum also started its own blog, which is integrated into the Museum’s web page and reports on work behind the scenes at the Museum. It is also an outlet for amusing visitor stories. VIII.I.
