The latest Kataklo’s production marks the beginning of a new creative season for the most
appreciated physical theatre ensemble in the Italian scene. Celebrating 15 years of activity in
2012, Kataklo’ takes an important step forward in its technical and theatrical research. Strongly
wonted by Giulia Staccioli, “Puzzle” is a choral and polyhedric composition, realized by the union of
memorable and well-known Kataklò’s choreographies of the past and new choreographies for the
first time created by the dancers themselves that during these years have given their contribution in
the improvement of the company.
The show includes two debuts by Paolo Benedetti former dancer of the company and now
responsible for the training of Accademia Kataklò Giulia Staccioli and a debut by ZaMagA_Eleina
D. (alias Maria Agatiello and Marco Zanotti in collaboration with Claudia Cavalli and Vito
Cassano).
The experienced and passionate guide of Giulia Staccioli includes, since the company foundation,
the direct involvement of the artists in the creation process that takes into account the expressive
possibilities and the single performers’ characteristics.
Today Kataklò finds in “Puzzle” a confirmation of its method, giving to dancers a new space so that

they can be authors or, for better saying, “dancerthors”.
Giulia Staccioli wants every Kataklò member to become a piece of a “Puzzle”, a fundamental
element that finds his/her place only inside the group, in a common creative atmosphere.
The birth and settlement of the “Accademia Kataklò Giulia Staccioli” in the “DanceHaus Susanna
Beltrami” in Milan and the more frequent workshops that the company organizes all around Italy
are in the meantime motives and consequences of this new creative period.
“Puzzle”, as the scenic height of a long process, believes in every member’s ideas to reach a
perfect alchemy. Thanks to the variety and diversity of expression, passing through theatre, dance
and even the acrobatics, it is possible to fully give expression to the various artists’ competences.
“Puzzle” is a sharing place, an open and free space, a way to let the spectator come into contact
with the passion and the creativity of the group and to let him/her understand together with the
company the effect of a perfect composition, where every piece finds its place.
Giulia Staccioli
Giulia Staccioli, choreographer and artistic director, founded the Kataklò Athletic Dance Theatre company in
1995. She studied classical ballet and ended her athletics career as rhythmic gymnastics Olympic finalist (Los
Angeles 84, Seoul 88). After the competitive activity she moved to New York to study dance at the Alvin Ailey
Studios.
Here she confirmed her powers of interpretation and went on to become a member of the U.S. Momix
company where, for three years, she focused on experimentation as she pursued professional growth under
the guidance of Moses Pendleton.
From this experience that the Kataklò project emerged with its distinctive choreographic style based on an
intense study of gesture and all forms of body language, a new approach to what is internationally known as
physical theatre and has been highly acclaimed by both critics and the public.
Staccioli’ s artistic endeavors have received prestigious awards such as the UNESCO Prize for helping with sport
to the promotion of international cooperation ('89), the Positano Award "Léonida Massine” for the art of
dance (special plate 2003), the Hesperia Award for dance and its various expressions (2003) and the
Maecenas Prize "Fair Play" ("sport and show" 2005).
She has been often invited to take part in highly important public events, such as the Opening Ceremony of
the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics (she designed the impressive five-circle structure, icon of the Games and
homage to the Olympic spirit); for the 60th Sicilian Regional Assembly she created the Luci e Ombre (Light
and Shadows) choreography, projected onto the walls of the Norman Palace before President Napolitano in
June 2007.
Her multi-faceted education allows her to keep conferences, seminars and workshops for professionals and for
the major Italian and international companies.
From March 2011 she teaches at the Faculty of “Scienze Motorie”, University of Milan, degree program "Sports
Science, Sport and Health, Professor of Modern Dance.
Kataklò Athletic Dance Theatre
Giulia Staccioli’s creativeness is the main driver of the independent repertory company Kataklò which has
reaped success for over the last ten years. It represents an alternative to large productions and clearly
demonstrates the fact that there is a dance scene in Italy fully able to fill theatres throughout the world with its
own productions.
Kataklò’s name comes from ancient Greek and means "I dance bending and twisting."
The hallmark of Kataklo style has been, from the very start, the extreme athletic prowess and outstanding
dance techniques of each member. It takes a highly versatile artistic attitude and a strenuous training period
to become a full member of the company.
Giulia Staccioli’ s creative method, backed, since 2006, by Jessica Gandini, centers on guiding the dancers as
she involves them directly in the choreographic creation process. A seminal artistic idea is developed over
very many sessions of improvisation, thus stimulating each individual performer s experimental and inventive
talents.
Kataklò is a work in progress which continues to generate innovative ideas and stimulating collaborations.

The Kataklò company has a high International reputation for its artistic expertise and amazingly spectacular
productions, and it is recognized as the spokesperson of the Italian culture in the world through assiduous
cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institutes and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs for events, festivals and
events outside national boundaries.
Thanks to the unmistakable and spectacular fusion of dance, athleticism, acrobatics, mime, humor, sounds,
lights and costumes, Kataklò’s productions have the power of compose surreal scenarios, to create illusions,
and challenge the imagination, transcending all cultural, linguistic and generational boundaries.
It currently lists six original shows on its bill worldwide: Indiscipline (1996), Kataklopolis (1999), Up (2002),
Livingston (2005), Play (2008) Love Machines (2010).
To celebrate the company’s 15 years of activity, Puzzle debuts in 2012: a choral composition created through
the combination of the company’s historic coreographies and the first works proposed by the dancers under
Giulia Staccioli’s direction and supervision.
To its consolidated experience in the creation of special events must be added its participation in sports and
cultural festivals and also in television shows. Important events in which the company has taken part include:
the performance before Pope John Paul II in St. Peter s Square for the 18th World Youth Day (2003), the Sydney
Olympics (2000), the 2006 Turin Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2006 and
2009), the Hong Kong New Year s Day celebrations (2007), the 60th Anniversary of the Sicilian Regional
Assembly (2007), officially representing Italy at the 2008 Peking Cultural Olympics 2008 at the request of the
Chinese Ministry of Culture and the Beijing Olympic Games Committee and under the patronage of the Italian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Italian Embassy.
In Spring 2010 the company has been engaged in an important tour that touched the main Brazilian cities. In
2011 the group has repeated the Brazilian experience with the show Light.
In the same year Kataklò Athletic Dance Theatre is testimonial of the UNICEF campaign “VOGLIAMO ZERO”.
Kataklò now has its rehearsal space in Milan as part of Susanna Beltrami’s DANCEHAUS.
The
headquarters and the company's operations center is in Bologna, where the organizational,
administrative and productive staff follows Kataklò’s work.
Kataklò Academy
The passion for teaching has led Giulia Staccioli to an effective, personnel training method, always applied
within the company Kataklò.
Today this technical training course, developed with the help of Paolo Benedetti, has become the basis of the
first Italian professional training Academy focused on physical theater aspects and techniques.
Created by Giulia Staccioli in collaboration with Susanna Beltrami’s DANCEHAUS in Milan, Kataklò Academy is
a project that aims to become an area of international artistic development and a veritable breeding ground
for new talents.
In addition, under the operational direction and responsibility of Paolo Benedetti, the company organizes
physical theatre workshops and stages, hanging techniques and functional training, open to professionals and
not, held by choreographers, teachers, instructors and dancers who regularly perform with Kataklò.
