About Protein
One of the most distinctive voices in British dance theatre, Protein uses a blend of original
choreography, text, humour and music to entertain and provoke audiences. Its socially relevant
material connects theatrical experiences with the everyday and real life stories that engage
audiences and participants in both on-and off-stage productions around the world. Luca Silvestrini's
inclusive creative process and approach to making exceptional dance theatre for people of all ages
and abilities sets the company apart and Protein has carved out new territory in which to develop,
present and experience dance theatre.
The success and impact of accessible and thought-provoking dance theatre productions examining
everyday life has seen Protein’s profile grow steadily over the previous decade and more. Named
Best Independent Dance Company at the 2011 National Dance Critics’ Awards, the company enjoys
an enviable position within the dance sector, with Luca Silvestrini’s choreography and Protein much
admired and in demand across the UK and the world.
Protein has toured throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, with performances in Italy,
Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, France, Germany, Croatia, Malta, Czech Republic, Holland, Canada
and the USA. Its production LOL (lots of love), inspired by the culture of online relationships, toured
to the Middle East, Croatia, Russia, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Colombia, Thailand and India. With its
2013/14 production Border Tales, Protein turned the traditional touring model on its head by
presenting shows for longer runs in a venue, selling out 16 of its 29 shows. The company is
currently making its latest production, May Contain Food, which examines our relationship with
food. Set in a dining environment and featuring four dancers and four singers with new music by
Orlando Gough, it premieres and tours in spring 2016.
Protein is Company in Residence at Greenwich Dance and a Yorkshire Dance Partner, and in 2012 it
became a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England.
