Arts & Humanities Program Review Resources & Opportunities
If you are looking for ways to achieve Proficient or Distinguished ratings on your school’s Arts & Humanities Program Review
during the 2012-13 school year, check out the Arts Education programs offered by HCTC’s Greater Hazard Area Performing Arts
Series. We have different arts genres that will provide many occasions for documentation of opportunities provided for students
to create, perform, and respond in various arts disciplines; and of formal and informal performances, critiques, analysis, etc. as
stated in Demonstrators 1 through 4 of the Arts and Humanities: Curriculum and Instruction section in the KDE Program Review
Guide for Arts & Humanities. Missoula Children’s Theatre and GRAMMY award winning Native American artist, Robert Mirabal
will be available to conduct workshops / assembly programs at your school, which will provide opportunities for documentation
of artist residencies, guest artists or performing groups. Students will also have outside performance opportunities in Missoula
Children’s Theatre production of Hansel and Gretel, Appalachian Winter Homecoming: A Tribute to Jean Ritchie and Little Theatre
of Hazard productions which will provide opportunities for participation in regional, district and local arts events. We will also be
presenting several matinee shows for which schools can schedule field trips with their students as additional outside performance
experiences that provide further opportunities for response, critique and analysis. Funding to cover travel costs to attend most of
our performances is available through Kentucky Arts Council’s TranspARTation grants. So be sure to check out the links for that
information included in the program descriptions below.
To make a reservation for your students to attend a performance, schedule a residency workshop or program at your school, or

Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) is North America’s largest touring theatre for
young people. Touring now for over 30 years their mission is the development of
life skills through participation in the performing arts. Some of the characteristics
attained through participation in this unique and educational MCT residency
project are creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills, and selfesteem. A team of two professional Actor/Directors will arrive in our community
at the beginning of the week with a set, costumes, props, and make-up, everything
it takes to put on a play, except the cast. The weeklong residency begins with an
open group audition on Monday, August 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the HCTC First
Federal Center and culminates with matinee school performances on Friday
and a public evening performance on Saturday. Fifty to sixty students in grades 1
through 12 are cast and well rehearsed throughout the week, learning lines, songs,
and choreography to perform as an ensemble in producing a full-length musical.
All of MCT shows are original adaptations of children’s stories and fairytales, a
twist on the classical stories that you know and love. Rehearsals are scheduled
after school every afternoon/evening Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8:30
p.m., with the final dress rehearsal on Friday morning before the matinee school
performances. All cast members will need to be excused from school on the
Friday of the matinee school performances.
MCT also offers a selection of educational workshops to complement the
weeklong residency of Hansel and Gretel. A complete list with workshop titles
and descriptions can be sent upon request. Workshops are available for all
grade levels, as well as adults, and most workshops can accommodate up to
60 students; with the exception of the Drama Quest workshop for 1st - 2nd
grades and the Mime Your Own Business workshop for 9th - 12th grades. These
can accommodate up to 30 students in each. The cost of the workshops are
$75 each. These can be scheduled at your school during the residency week, on
Tuesday - Thursday, August 14 – 16.

Native American Artist Robert Mirabal
Thursday, October 25, 2011 – 11 a.m. • HCTC First Federal Center, Hazard, KY
Admission: $3
Two-time GRAMMY Award winner Robert Mirabal lives with his family at the foot
of the sacred Taos Mountain in northern New Mexico. Maintaining a traditional
life and keeping the centuries-old customs of the Taos Pueblo people, Robert has
been described as a Native American “Renaissance Man” - a musician, composer,
painter, master craftsman, poet, actor, screenwriter, horseman and farmer - and
he travels extensively playing his music all over the world. His dozen albums of
traditional music, rock and roll, and spoken word present a contemporary view
of American Indian life that is unequaled. Robert is an extremely versatile artist
whose purpose is to carry on the traditional life of his Taos Pueblo culture and
share it with the world. He is a strong proponent for utilizing traditional arts to
create bridges between other cultural art forms and generations.
As a solo artist, Robert will be available to conduct workshops and programs in
area schools. These programs/workshops can be customized to meet the needs of
the individual schools based on many options that Robert has available including,
but not limited to, flute making and percussion demonstrations/workshops, as well
as programs that introduce students to the native songs, stories and ceremonial
dances of the Pueblo people. The cost for workshops / programs at your school
range from $50 to $100.
A leading proponent of world music, Robert has merged his indigenous American
sound with those of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, tapping into a planetary
pulse with a style that defies categorization. The matinee performance on
Thursday will include a full band and dancers blending all of Robert’s influences
into a musical landscape that conjures up both the historic and contemporary
West. Schools that schedule Robert to come for solo programs/workshops will
receive a discounted admission to the matinee performance. Schools wanting to
attend the matinee performance may also apply for a TranspARTation Grant from
the Kentucky Arts Council to receive transportation funding. The deadline to
apply for funding is September 1, 2012. It is recommended that schools contact
the Performing Arts office to make your reservation before submitting your
application to confirm the availability and terms of the trip. For an application and
more information visit the Kentucky Arts Council’s website at:

choir directors, along with faculty and students from the KSBTM. The program will

and seasonal favorites along with some of Jean Ritchie’s most beloved songs. Area
school choirs interested in participating in the choral festival and performance

Kentucky Shakespeare in Julius Caesar
Thursday, April 11, 2013 - 12:30 p.m.
HCTC First Federal Center, Hazard, KY
Admission: $3
Kentucky Shakespeare presents a 90-minute production of Shakespeare’s
historic tragedy about the rise and fall of Rome’s notorious dictator, Julius
Caesar. Follow Brutus as he battles with the themes of honor, patriotism, and
friendship. This production puts an emphasis on language, making Shakespeare’s
words immediately accessible to its audience, without compromising the
original integrity of the work. A short Q&A session will be held at the end of
the performance to provide opportunities for students and teachers to get
more information. Study guides will also be available for teachers to download
from Kentucky Shakespeare’s website with information for before and after the
show. Schools wanting to attend the matinee performance may also apply for a
TranspARTation Grant from the Kentucky Arts Council to receive transportation
funding. The deadline to apply for funding is December 1, 2012 or March 1, 2013.
