Welcome to season 5!
Good grief!
We were thrilled to make it through season one...to be here celebrating our fifth
is very exciting for us. To list all the people who helped us would be impossible...
but you know who you are, and we are grateful.
Once again this year we are humbled and awed by the talent that has joined us
for our Festival - on stage and behind the scenes. We send a sincere thank you to
our entire company. You are the reason we’re here.
To our corporate sponsors - thank you. The fact that you would back us in this
venture speaks volumes of your commitment to the community. Thank you for
helping us bring summer theatre to our City.
We are very pleased to present this season’s line up. We never thought we’d do a
musical but here we are with the fun and heart-warming CHARLIE BROWN. Quirky
comedy is a favourite of ours, and THE ANGER IN ERNEST & ERNESTINE is a great,
fun show. Telling stories is one of Daniel McIvor’s best talents and MARION BRIDGE
is a great story of family. Al Pittman is a hero of ours. To bring WEST MOON back
to Corner Brook is something we are exceptionally proud of. Speaking of which,
our pride of place comes shining through in TYME. There’s no other place we’d
rather be.
We are fortunate to have the support of wonderful people in our lives.

This is Emma’s second
season with Stage West
Theatre Festival, and she
couldn’t be more excited!
In the past Emma has
taken part in TNL’s
Youth Theatre program,
participated in school
choirs, as well as Gary
Graham’s Chorale, and is
currently going into the
third year of her Bachelor
of Fine Arts in Theatre
at
Grenfell
Campus,
Memorial University of
Newfoundland. She is
looking forward to this
upcoming season with
the amazing and talented
folks of Stage West!
Amy Andrews
Amy’s past roles have included
Anna in Closer, Dot in 1949,
Loretta in The Melville Boys,
and Diana in Lend Me a Tenor.
Amy
has
choreographed
such musicals as Jesus Christ
Superstar, Guys and Dolls, and
Evita (TNL), The Rocky Horror
Show and Little Shop of Horrors
(OBP), Splash and Borrowed
Black (GMSM), and Chicago
(STF). Amy has created
original dance productions
of
Oz,
Sleeping
Beauty,
Midsummer Night’s Dream,
The Nutcracker, Wonderland,
Peter Pan, and Snow White,
through Dance Studio West
where she has been owner and
Artistic Director since 1998.
Amy’s favorite thing to do is
to play mom to her beautiful
son Henry, who just turned one
year old!
Gregg Davis
Gregg has been working
in theatre professionally
and voluntarily for almost
30 years, primarily as
a
Technical
Director,
Carpenter,
Lighting
Designer, Floor Sweeper,
sometimes Chauffeur, and
is usually one who says
“we can do dat.” Some of
his work includes lighting
design for SWTF’s 2012
lineup (Legion venue), set
design for Little Shop of
Horrors, Art of War and
The Melville Boys and
lighting design for True
West and Art of War for
Off-Broadway Players. This
is Gregg’s second year
with Stage West and he is
excited about this year’s
line-up.
Toshon Dawe
Toshon has been involved in
the theatre community for as
long as she can remember.
Her passion for the arts has
taken her across Canada,
where she has enjoyed
playing the many roles that
the theatre has to offer. Past

CHAD
Chad is excited to be making
his SWTF debut as Ray Dwyer
in West Moon. Born and
raised in the small outport
community of Fogo Island, he
participated in local theatre
groups until moving to Corner
Brook in 1996 and has been
active in community theatre
ever since. Past notable
roles include Uncle Henry/
Guard in The Wizard of Oz,
Bellhop in Lend Me a Tenor,
Mr. Bernstein in Little Shop of
Horrors (OBP) and numerous
supporting roles over the
last 15 years. He currently
resides in Corner Brook with
his partner and cast-mate,
Anne, and has been working
as a registered nurse since
1998. Chad hopes you enjoy
the shows this year.

Pamela
By day, Pamela Gill is a
communications professional
at
Grenfell
Campus,
Memorial University. In the
off hours when she’s not
playing mother to Thomas
and
partner
to
Jerry,
however,
Pamela
enjoys
any opportunity to make
music and theatre with good
friends. Pamela is a founding
member of AcaBella, western
Newfoundland’s all-female a
cappella chorus, as well as
Corner Brook’s community
theatre group, the OffBroadway Players. She has
also been a board member
with Theatre Newfoundland
Labrador. Pamela is delighted
to return to Stage West
Theatre Festival’s company
for a second season!
Anne
Anne was born and raised in Corner
Brook. A graduate of Regina High
School, she went on to get her BFA
in Theatre from Sir Wilfred Grenfell
College and her B.Ed from St.
Thomas University. She was bitten
by the theatre bug at a young age
and has been involved in stage
work for most of her life. She has
worked with the Broadway North
Theatre Company in such roles
as Frenchy in Grease and Ethel
Crachitt in Scrooge. Also, during her
time in Saskatchewan, she was in a
production of Don’t Dress for Dinner
with Odyssey Theatre Company,
playing Suzette. She has also
worked with Theatre Newfoundland
Labrador, Off-Broadway Players
and Stage West Theatre Festival.
She is thrilled to be returning to
SWTF this season. She hopes you
enjoy the shows!

DARREN
Darren has been involved
in a number of local
theatre
productions
such as Guys and Dolls,
The Music Man, South
Pacific, and Annie. Stage
West Theatre Festival
has seen the light to
bring Darren from the
orchestral pit to the
stage for his second
season playing bass in A
Fine Tyme.

Daniel is from Corner

studying at Corner Brook
Regional High. He has
been a student at Theatre
Newfoundland Labrador
for a number of years, and
has participated in many
youth theatre, High School
Drama

Night’s Dream, and It’s
a Wonderful Life. For
the past six months,
Daniel and his family
have been living in
the United Kingdom,
where he was able to
take part inSt Andrew’s
Church’s production of A
Christmas Carol, as well
as an independent short
film.

Jacobsen
Ken
Born and raised in B.C.’s Lower
Mainland, Ken Jacobsen is a
professor of English and Head
of the Arts Division at Grenfell
Campus, Memorial University,
where he teaches Shakespeare
and dramatic literature. He
has also participated in many
theatre productions as an
actor and director. His SWTF
involvement includes playing
Morgan in The Drawer Boy and
directing The Complete Works of
William Shakespeare (Abridged)
(Revised). Other recent roles
include George Bailey in It’s a
Wonderful Life (TNL), Old Bellair
in The Man of Mode (Grenfell),
and Leonato in Much Ado
About Nothing (Grenfell). Ken
is married to Nancy and father
of Daniel, Benjamin, and Levi.
He is also, much to his sorrow,
a diehard Canucks fan. Ken is
very excited to be working with
Stage West again this year.
SUsan
This is Susan’s second season
with
Stage
West
Theatre
Festival. Susan has returned
from “away” and is presently the
Resident Stage Manager in the
Theatre Department of Memorial
University, Grenfell Campus. A
graduate of the National Theatre
School of Canada in Montreal,
her stage management career
includes work with George Brown
Theatre School in Toronto, the
Great Canadian Theatre Company
in Ottawa, Citadel Theatre in
Edmonton, The Georgian Theatre
Festival in Meaford, ON, Grand
Theatre in London and Kingston,
ON, Centaur Theatre in Montreal,
TNL, and the Stephenville Theatre
Festival. This season Susan is
stage-managing You’re a Good
Man, Charlie Brown and The Anger
in Ernest and Ernestine.
Locke
IAN
Ian Locke is an actor and
singer currently entering his
second year of the theatre
program at the Grenfell
Campus
of
Memorial
University. He has been
acting since he was 9
years old, and has worked
with both TNL and the OffBroadway Players. In 2013
Ian received the Thompson
Trophy for best actor under
21 at the Newfoundland
Provincial Drama Festival
for his role in The Play About
the Baby (OBP). Ian has also
been awarded with the
Aaron Bradbury Memorial
Scholarship for best musical
theatre performance at the
Rotary Music Festival. He is
very excited to be working
with
Stage
West
this
summer.
Matthews
Martin
Chelsea
Marks

A university student at Grenfell
Campus studying Computational
Mathematics, Chelsea Marks has
been actively involved in music,
acting, and dancing from a young
age. She has played piano for
twelve years, previously taught
music lessons for four, and started
dancing in high school. She is
involved in numerous choirs,
bands, and theatre companies
around Corner Brook. Acting
credits include Nancy in Oliver
Twist, Olive Ostrovsky in Lock and
Keynote’s The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee, numerous
characters
in
Off-Broadway
Player’s Little Shop of Horrors
and The Wizard of Oz, and Sissy
in Stage West Theatre Festival’s
This is a Play. Chelsea is happy
to be back for her third year with
Stage West Theatre Festival and
is excited to see what it will bring!
Joanne
Joanne has thoroughly enjoyed
the varied experiences, skills and
friendships she has gained through
the vibrant community theatre
here in Corner Brook. Joanne has
appeared in various productions
including Clue and The Wizard
of OZ, and has stage-managed
a number of productions for OffBroadway Players and Stage
West Theatre Festival. This year
Joanne tried directing for the
first time and was very honoured
and overwhelmed when The Play
About The Baby was awarded The
Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador Drama Festival Award for
best presentation of a full-length
play and the Neala F. Griffin Trophy
for Best Direction at the 63rd NL
Provincial Drama Festival in Goose
Bay. Joanne is very happy to be
a part of the Stage West Theatre
Festival again this summer.

DR. JENNIFER
Jennifer is a dedicated vocal and
piano pedagogue, collaborative
pianist,
and
conductor.
She
began her piano studies with
Gary Graham and Beverly Neal
in Corner Brook before attending
Acadia University, earning a
Bachelor of Music Degree in piano
and voice, followed by a Degree in
Music Performance and Literature
from the University of Western
Ontario. Jennifer concluded her
formal education by achieving a
Doctorate in Music Performance
from McGill University in 2006.
Dr. Matthews recently returned
to Corner Brook and began the
Bay of Islands Musical Arts. She
also recently introduced a course
‘Teaching Actors How to Sing’
for Grenfell Campus, Memorial
University of Newfoundland. She is
thrilled to be Musical Director for
You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown
with Stage West this summer.
Paddle
Danny
Maloney
Danny is originally from
Wabush. He has been
involved in community
theatre both on stage and
behind the scenes since
1995, first with the Carol
Players in Lab West, then
with ACT (A Community
Theatre) in Charlottetown,
PEI and finally with the
Off-Broadway Players here
in Corner Brook. Danny
is very happy to be back
with Stage West Theatre
Festival. He has been a
pretty regular member of
the Stage West company
over their 5 seasons,
including directing The
Foursome in 2008 and in
playing Rudy in Wrong for
Each Other in 2010.
Helena
A second year university student,
Helena has been involved in the
arts from a young age. She has
been a member of Dance Studio
West ever since it began in 1998
and has also been teaching/
assistant teaching for the past
three years. She has also been
heavily involved in her school’s
drama program since grade
seven when she was stage
manager for Antic Spring.
Since then she has also been in
Small Actors in which she won
an award for “Best Supporting
Actress” and also Dance Studio
West’s Nutcracker as Clara. Last
summer she was also honored
to have had the opportunity to
play Mary Snow in Salt Water
Moon. Helena is really looking
forward to working with Stage
West Theatre Festival again this
summer!

Sheldon
Parsons
Now in his second year with
SWTF, Sheldon is no stranger to
community theatre. With over 20
years experience, starting with
the Grenfell Players, he’s been
involved in almost every facet of
the stage, including his primary
love: props, makeup and maskwork. Sheldon has appeared
in numerous productions, most
recently TNL’s A Miracle on 34th
St. and their annual Sexy and
Dangerous fundraiser, which also
marked his first foray into musical
theatre. With respect to props, his
most recent contributions could
be found in Sexy and Dangerous
(TNL), Hysteria (OBP) and Stage
West’s 2012 season, where he
supplied a variety of pieces for
The 39 Steps, among others.
Sheldon looks forward to the
challenges and excitement the
new season is sure to bring.
Matthew
Matt is thrilled to be
back with Stage West! A
Corner Brook native, Matt
is pursuing his degree in
Musical Theatre at Sheridan
Institute. Credits include A
Fine Tyme, Saltwater Moon
(Stage West), A Midsummer
Night’s Dream (TNL) and …
Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
(CBRH) when he was named
Best Actor at the High School
Drama Festival. All my love
and thanks to my parents for
their unwavering support;
to K – the best little sister I
never had; to JJ for always
helping me get back up; and
of course to R, for being my
light in the dark.

very grateful to many people for
their support and encouragement,
especially Wendy and Matt. A big
thanks to Steve and Jordan, too,
for everything they’ve done that
Mike has claimed credit for.

Steve dedicates this season
to his wife Amy and his son

Phil
Power
This is Phil’s third season
with Stage West Theatre
Festival and he feels pretty
awesome about that. He
has finished a year of
studying Acting at Grenfell
and
has
frequently
performed since 2008
as an actor and a singer.
Highlights include Lock &
Keynote’s The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling
Bee, The Effect of Gamma
Rays on Man-in-the-Moon
Marigolds, and numerous
other roles, but also, of
course, The Drawer Boy.

Neil
Neil first met SWTF’s Mike
Payne as a member of
the first class of Grenfell’s
theatre program. Since that
time he has worked with
Rising Tide Theatre, Theatre
Newfoundland
Labrador,
Dance Studio West, Gros
Morne Summer Music, the
Off-Broadway Players, the
Corner Brook Arts and
Culture Centre, and of course
all of the Stage West artists.
Before that he worked with
“Chuck” Brown at National
Semiconductors Ltd in Ville
Saint Laurent. This summer
he finally has a chance to
work in the world of the real
Charlie Brown.

Janice
Spencer
After taking a 12 year
maternity leave from
musical theatre to
raise her own little
actors,
Janice
is
excited to return to the
stage as Sally in You’re
a Good Man, Charlie
Brown. Janice wants to
thank Mike Payne for
talking her into doing
this, Mom and Dad for
all the babysitting and
awesome meals, Mike
and Colin for their
support and patience,
and Gina for being
her inspiration and
understudy.
Stringer
An Artistic Director of Stage West
Theatre Festival, Jordan is excited to
be back for the 5th season! Jordan has
appeared in SWTF’s Foursome, Art,
Soldier’s Heart, The Complete Works
of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
(Revised), and The Drawer Boy; he
also directed This is a Play. Jordan is
President of the Off-Broadway Players,
with whom he directed Hysteria and
received the Neala F. Griffin Trophy
for Best Direction. Having worked with
Rising Tide Theatre in Trinity, Jordan
now teaches Theatre and English at
Elwood Regional High School, where
he is the founder and director of No
Stage Theatre. Jordan holds a BFA
(Theatre) from Sir Wilfred Grenfell
College. He would like to thank the
entire company for their hard work
and dedicate this season to the
memory of his colleague, co-director
and friend Jean Nicholas.
Wayne
Jacob
Thompson
Jacob grew up being
involved with music, but
only usually performed
with larger ensembles.
Still getting used to getting
out and performing, Jacob
is looking forward to his
second yearwith A Fine
Tyme and learning some
Newfoundland folk music.
He is also looking forward
to learning more about
the past livelihood of
Newfoundlanders,
about
which he knew very little
before learning some of
these folk songs.
Thompson
Wayne is excited to be
returning for a third season as
Musical Director of A Fine Tyme.
Since being transplanted to
the west coast 23 years ago,
Wayne has been involved
in a number of musical and
theatrical pursuits. In addition
to his involvement in the
musical ministries at The
Salvation Army Corner Brook
Temple corps, Wayne is also a
member of the Bay of Islands
Musical Arts Chamber Choir.
Wayne has also written and
directed two dinner theatres
and was a cast member in TNL’s
production of Guys and Dolls.
Along with his involvements
in the theatrical and musical
community, Wayne is also a
private music teacher and
amateur composer.
Wendy
Vey
This year marks Wendy’s
33rd year working in theatre
and her 24th year as the
Wardrobe Supervisor at

to be back with Stage West
Theatre Festival as Costume
Designer for You’re a Good
Man, Charlie Brown and
West Moon. While Wendy
is very proud of all her
theatrical accomplishments,
she is most proud of being
part of the Vey-Payne
theatre family and would
like to thank them for their
continued support of all her
artistic endeavours.

SARAH
white
Sarah is a theatre designer/
technician originally from
Deer Lake, NL. Having
spent the last few years
residing here in Corner
Brook, she has recently
received a Bachelor in Fine
Arts - Theatre Stagecraft
from Memorial University
of Newfoundland - Grenfell
Campus, and was given the
honour of designing the
lights for her graduating
shows,
working
with
director Michael Waller.
In addition to working in
theatre throughout the
year, Sarah likes to spend
her summers doing so as
well, and is glad to be able
to join Stage West Theatre
Festival for some fun this
season!
Wiseman
Sandy made her acting debut
in grade six staring as the
Canada Goose (she said one
word throughout the entire
play: “honk”) and since that
time the arts have been a part
of her life! Most recently she
has been an active member
of the Off-Broadway Players
since 2008, taking active
roles on stage and backstage,
resulting in two Newfoundland
and Labrador Provincial Drama
Festival awards for PropertyManagement in 2011 and 2012.
In January 2012 she joined
the Bay of Islands Musical Arts
Choir which re-kindled her love
of singing. She is absolutely
thrilled to be part of the Fine
Tyme group this year and is
looking forward to an amazing
summer with Stage West
Theatre Festival!
Wendy
woodland
Soprano Wendy Woodland has been
part of the music scene in Corner
Brook for close to 20 years. A graduate
of Memorial University’s School
of Music, she also studied Musical
Theatre at Dalhousie University and
Holland College, PEI. She has worked
as choir director, music educator,
and adjudicator at various music
festivals. As a performing artist,
Wendy has worked with most of the
ma jor festivals and groups here on
the west coast. In 2003 she released
Sultry, which earned her two
nominations by MusicNL. This first
appearance with Stage West joyfully
brings her full circle to a show she
appeared in while studying, so many
years ago! Since 2001, Wendy has
been producer, host and station
manager for Rogers TV Corner
Brook. Her current magazine show,
Corner Brook Café, just finished its
twelfth season.
