How do I update JAVA while using Best Practice Software? This FAQ is intended to explain how to correctly update your existing version of Java without removing components that are important to maintain the use and functionality of the Medicare systems within Best Practice Software. Java is a programming language and computing platform released by Sun Microsystems. In our present computer driven environment, Java is used by many different software applications, including the Medicare components found in Best Practice Software. These components, specifically the ‘Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_17’, are included as part of the initial installation of Best Practice Software. What should I do when JAVA prompts me for an update? At some point, your Windows operating system will prompt you to perform a Java update. This prompt may appear on each PC connected to your practice network, and will normally be seen after the PC has been restarted or at first login. This means that unless all your PC’s are restarted simultaneously, the update prompts may occur at different times. Hint: Best Practice would advise speaking with your practice IT Provider before updating any software on your network. Where a user accepts the offer to perform the update, a new feature in the Java installer will advise the user if any old Java versions have been detected on the current machine. Part of this new feature provides the user with the ability to select and uninstall any older versions found. The two (2) options given are: Remind Me Later Uninstall This allows the user to defer uninstalling any prior Java versions for a set period of time. Selecting this option will progress the user to the next screen in the uninstall process. What if I choose to uninstall any older Java versions? While completing the Java update is advisable, uninstalling an incorrect; although older version of Java, could have unintended effects on Best Practice functionality. Where the ‘Uninstall’ option has be selected, a new screen will be presented that shows all the older versions found on the current machine. By default, all the old versions will be ticked in preparation for removal. Before clicking the ‘Next’ button, deselect the ‘Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_17’ option by un-ticking the checkbox. This is the version required by Best Practice and the Medicare module. Removing this version will have a negative impact on all Medicare functionality in Best Practice. Hint: There is a warning message on each Java screen indicating the removal of older versions may cause some applications to cease functioning. Please read each screen presented carefully before proceeding. Once the version required by Best Practice has been deselected, click the ‘Next’ button to complete the removal process. If you are unsure of your selections, select the ‘Back’ button to return to the previous screen where you can cancel the entire process and gain assistance from your practice IT provider before proceeding. Page 1 of 2 What if I have already removed all the old Java versions? If you believe you have inadvertently removed the Java version required by Best Practice, it is a simple process to reinstall the correct version and return any lost functionality. To reinstall the required Java version, open your web browser of choice (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox etc.) and navigate to the Best Practice website by typing www.bpsoftware.com.au into the browser address bar. When the page loads you should see the image below: Select the ‘Updates’ menu and then click on the ‘Utilities’ option. This will open a new screen containing a list of downloadable utilities used by our Support Specialists when assisting practices. Find the heading ‘Utility C Bp Medicare Module’, fill out your ‘BPS Site ID’ and enter a valid ‘Email Address’ into the provided text fields, then click the ‘Login’ button. When prompted, save the file to a convenient location on your current machine, normally the ‘Desktop’ is the easiest. After the file has downloaded, run it by double clicking on the file and following the prompts to complete the install. Installing the MAOL V3 module will replace any missing files, including the Java version required for the Medicare functionality in Best Practice to operate correctly. Hint: If you encounter any issues or errors when downloading the Bp Medicare Module, or when you are attempting to run the executable file after download, please speak with your practice IT provider for assistance.
