ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDERS NETWORK: AUTUMN LUNCH – 11th October 2011 ‘Local and global’ KINDLY HOSTED BY THE CITY BRIDGE TRUST City Guildhall, Gresham Street, EC2V Andy Atkins, Executive Director, Friends of the Earth Shlomo Dowen, National Co-ordinator, UK Without Incineration Andy has been Executive Director of Friends of the Earth since 2009. He was previously Policy and Campaigns Director at development charity Tearfund where he oversaw the establishment of policy and campaigns work as a core focus for the organisation. He initiated Tearfund's work on climate change and championed climate change as a poverty issue among UK development NGOs. He was a key organiser and spokesperson for the Make Poverty History campaign, and a Board member of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition. Andy has also worked for the Chile Committee for Human Rights, CAFOD's Working in Partnership Programme and as Latin America Desk Officer at the Catholic Institute of International Relations (now Progressio). Shlomo Dowen has been the National Coordinator of the United Kingdom Without Incineration Network (UKWIN) since April 2008. Shlomo holds a post-graduate qualification in Environmental Decision Making (with Systems Thinking) from the Open University. Along with his wife Lorraine and their son Joshua, Shlomo is a partner in Only Solutions LLP – a holistic business consultancy that focuses on adult learning, active citizenship, and community development. Shlomo was instrumental in twice preventing the construction of a waste incinerator in Sherwood Forest, and his successes inspired him to support other communities facing similar proposals. Friends of the Earth is a national NGO with over 200 local groups in the UK and more than 70 partners worldwide. 12:45pm – 1.00pm Shlomo Dowen. Over 80 local waste campaigns are members of UK WIN. 1.00pm – 1.40pm Questions and discussion on the points raised by our speakers. 1.40pm onwards Dessert, coffee, and further conversation with other EFN members. 2.30pm Close Copies of the new EFN report, Funding Locally, Thinking Globally, will be available at the event. This short booklet includes six case studies of local grants which in different ways make a contribution to addressing wider environmental issues. P.T.O for directions.
