I recently participated in an exceptional creative music workshop led by Eugene Skeef. The workshop was a training session for Guildhall School of Music and Drama tutors, loosely based around Eugene's work in conflict resolution. He took us by the hand and guided us through a magical organic process, which ultimately resulted in a wonderful piece of original music. There were many, many beautiful enigmatic moments in this session, but the process also reflected systematic methodology. Eugene drew on his vast personal experience - musical, social, educational and artistic - to 'create a space' which promoted meaningful creativity and collaboration. From there he facilitated, nurtured and developed ideas from within the group. Rather than planning each micro moment, he was responsive to the requirements and limits of participants - we came away from the day with pragmatic musical information and useful social context for our field of work - but over and above this Eugene, a master storyteller, shared moments of his extraordinary life with us, which I for one found moving and deeply inspirational.
