Patricia R. Schroeder As a graduate student in 1979, I announced my intention to write a dissertation on American drama. One respected teacher, a distinguished professor of American literature, offered this discouraging reply: "Well, that will be pretty difficult to do. Unless you want to write on Eugene O'Neill, there really isn't any American drama."
