LON-‐CAPA Student Cheat Sheet Logging In Step 1: go to yourdomain.loncapa.net Step 2: input your username, password, domain Step 3: click “Log In” Resetting Your Passwords Go to yourdomain.loncapa.net and click on “Forgot Password.” Tips for Entering Answers with Units • Use a single space to separate a number from its unit. ◦ Example: 2.35 grams should be written 2.35 g not 2.35g • Units are case-‐sensitive. ◦ Example: "milliliter" is mL, not ml • Use the symbols * / ^ to form compound units ◦ Example: The following are equivalent ways of entering "4.79 grams per cubic centimeter" 4.79 g/cm^3 | 4.79 g*cm^-‐3 | 4.79 g/mL • Note: Units are not required for every question. Read the questions carefully ◦ Example: What is the mass of 1.0 mol of O2 Answer: 32 g ◦ Example: How many grams of O2 are there in 1.0 mol? Answer: 32 • More Examples of Correct Entries: ◦ The length of a rod is 167.2 centimeters: 1.672 m | 167.2 cm | 1672 mm | 1.672E+3 mm | 1.672E-‐3 km | 1.672E+9 nm ◦ The density of a substance is 6.53 grams per milliliter: 6.53 g/mL | 6.53 g*mL^-‐1 | 6.53 g/cm^3 | 6.53 kg/L | 6530 kg/m^3 ◦ The pressure of a gas is 0.987 atmosphere: 0.987 atm | 750. torr | 100. kPa | 1.00 bar | 1.00E5 kg*m^-‐1*s^-‐2 ◦ The specific heat of water is 4.18 Joules per gram per Kelvin: 4.18 J/g/K | 4.18 J/K/g | 4.18 J/(g*K) | 4.18 J*(K*g)^-‐1 | 4.18 J*g^-‐1*K^-‐1 Tips for Using Symbols • Square root: use sqrt ◦ Example: the square root of 4 times x ◦ sqrt(4x) • Exponents: use the ^ symbol ◦ Example: y equals four plus x squared ◦ y=4+x^2 • Multiplication: use the * symbol ◦ Example: y equals 9 times 25 ◦ Y=9*25 • Division: us the / symbol ◦ Example: y equals 34 divided by 15 ◦ Y=34/15 • Addition & Subtraction: use + -‐ ◦ Example: 23 plus 7 minus 10 ◦ Y=23+7-‐10 !
• General example: 2𝑥 ! + 6𝑥 + !
◦ 2x^2+6x+4/3 ◦ 2*x^2+6*x+4/3 ◦ 2(x^2+3x+2/3) ◦ or any other similar expression that is equivalent Tips for Entering Numbers and Variables • There should be no spaces in the number ◦ Example: 2.35 grams should be written 2.35 not 2 . 35 • There must be no other spaces anywhere else in the answer string ◦ Example: 2.35 meters per second should be written 2.35 m/s not 2 . 3 5 m / s. ◦ Note the spacing between numbers and letters in the incorrect example above • If your equation has multiple variables, you will need the * symbol in-‐between them ◦ Example: 2xy+3x needs to be written 2*x*y+3*x Other Tips…(we have space to add more tips)
