Fellow Muslims blessed by Allah,
Islam is a religion that fulfils mankind’s needs from the mental, physical
and spiritual aspects, through revealed knowledge and with faith, Islam
and Ihsan. Indeed, each Muslim’s greatness would be achieved through
7
the conviction he attains. He could attain conviction through the union and
the infusion of aspects of faith, Islam and Ihsan in his life. Therefore, let us
together strengthen our conviction in Allah SWT so that we shall attain
greatness in this world and in the Hereafter.
Allah SWT declared in surah Ali Imran verse 102:

The mimbar today shall deliver a sermon entitled: “The Key to Freedom”.
Fellow Muslims blessed by Allah,
Jerusalem, al-Quds and Baitulmaqdis are holy sites which are steeped in
history for the adherents of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths. For
10
each Muslim, Palestine in general occupies a special place as a blessed
holy ground due to the Israk and Mikraj event. Besides that, Masjid al Aqsa
is the first kiblat for the Muslims.
Palestine, or previously known as Syam, is also where many prophets and
11
messengers had lived and died. Now, the old city and the historic capital of
Palestine is governed by the United Nations, or UN.
Since Israel’s victory in the year 1967, it has been under Israel’s control,
even though the world community does not recognise it. From then until
12
today, issues upon issues, seizures upon seizures, and battles upon
battles have happened in Israel’s quest to occupy the whole of Palestine.
Indeed, the historic holy city was once a sovereign land under Muslim
rulers, from the time of the second Caliph, Sayidina Umar RA. The citizens
13
and the people of the holy city lived in harmony, peace and tranquillity
even though they were a plural society with many different beliefs and
religions.
This was the policy of the Islamic government which guaranteed peace
and harmony for each society, religion and race under its auspices. It is
14
because Islam is a religion of peace and loves harmony, with the word
Islam itself bearing the meaning of ‘salam’ or peace.
But, it is the nature of the enemies of Islam to never cease attacking Islam,
to the point that they wish to turn Muslims into apostates. With the excuse
15
of freeing al-Quds and the holy city from the control of Islam and to free the
Christian peoples from Muslim rule, wars upon wars were fought.

The Key To Freedom
The series of wars in the quest to control al-Quds are known as the First,
16
Second and Third Crusades. The First Crusade was waged from the year
Ten Ninety Five (1095) to the year Ten Ninety Nine (1099).
The Second Crusade was waged from the year Eleven Forty Five (1145)
17
to Eleven Forty Nine (1149) as a continuation of the First Crusade, after
the Crusaders managed to capture many states under Muslim rule.
After almost 91 years and under the leadership of Salahuddin al-Ayubi,
Muslims were finally able to conquer al-Quds. Eventually, the Third
Crusade was waged from the year Eleven Eighty Nine (1189) to the year
18
Eleven Ninety Two (1192) through the partnership of the Christian Kings
namely Henry the Second (Henry II) from England and also Phillip the
Second (Philip II) from France, against the armies lead by Salahuddin alAyubi.
When we consider the Crusades, Salahuddin al-Ayubi is the one individual
that is very much remembered during that period in history. How was
19
Salahuddin al-Ayubi able to capture Baitulmaqdis successfully? What
strength did he, and his armies, possess to the point that they were able to
conquer Baitulmaqdis? What lessons can we gain from the historic event?
Fellow Muslims blessed by Allah,
The success of Salahuddin al-Ayubi and his armies in capturing
20
Baitulmaqdis was neither an easy task nor was it gained cheaply.
Baitulmaqdis was regained through the knowledge, determination,
patience and unity of all Musllims.
Knowledge is the basis for every act of a Muslim. Jihad is derived from
wisdom, and knowledge does not come from sentiments and emotions. In
21
fact, the question of jihad in Islam has been holistically and specifically
considered in books of jurisprudence.
From the Islamic perspective, warfare disallows the killing of children,
women, or the old and infirm. There is to be no killing at all if there is no
22
confrontation. Houses of worship should neither be desecrated nor torn
down. History has proven that many Islamic cities were founded without

much warfare or bloodshed.
Referring to the need for knowledge, Salahuddin al-Ayubi himself spent
much of his youth seeking wisdom and knowledge, by attending military
23
training. Only at 31 years of age, he and his fellow Muslim soldiers were
able to capture Cairo in order to take over Egypt from the Fatimid
Government.
The knowledge of Salahuddin al-Ayubi was shown in the wisdom of his
24
military genius. The Christians were allowed to stay in al-Quds with all
provisions provided to them, except for weapons.
While the Muslims, when al-Quds was captured by the Crusaders almost a
century earlier, were all brutally murdered. One of the most remembered
parts of the Crusades was when Salahuddin al-Ayubi offered medical
25
assistance to his foe, the Christian King, known as Richard the Lionheart.
Determination and patience are among the most important attributes that
must exist within each Muslim.
Baitulmaqdis was not recaptured by the Muslims under the sole effort and
leadership of Salahuddin al-Ayubi. Almost a century had gone by with
26
attempts made under the leaderships of Imad al-Din Zinki, Nur al-Din
Mahmud Zinki and finally, Salahuddin al-Ayubi.
In fact, al-Quds was recaptured under Salahuddin al-Ayubi during the
27
Second Crusade after the Crusaders had captured it during the First
Crusade.
The unity of the Muslim Ummah is a very important aspect after
knowledge, determination and patience. Because of that, there is a
proverb which says, “sticks in a bundle cannot be broken", which is
28
something we should all take heed of. Islam could easily be blocked and
the Muslim Ummah could easily be played around with if there is no unity
among us.
History has shown how the Crusaders managed to capture al-Quds
29
because Muslims at that time had disregarded the need to have a life that

is based on true Islamic teachings. At the same time they were busy
bickering, fighting and pulling each other down.
Success, progress and accomplishments were attained by Muslims when
they were united and were helping out each other. Rasulullah SAW
portrayed such situation in a hadith narrated by Imam al-Bukhari, from alNu’man bin Basyir RA who reported that Rasulullah SAW had said:
30
Which means: “The analogy of a person who preserves the laws of Allah
and a person who transgresses them is like a group of people who votes
31
for a place on a ship. Some of them will get a place on the upper deck
while some will get a place in the lower deck. When those in the lower
deck want water, they have to ask from those on the upper deck.
And the ones in the lower deck will say: “If we make a hole at this level, we
surely won’t need to ask for water from the people above us anymore.” If
those on the upper deck let those in the lower deck proceed with such an
idea (namely, making a hole in the bottom hull of the ship), surely all of
32
them will perish (sink). On the other hand, if those on the upper deck forbid
those in the lower deck from proceeding with the idea, surely those on the
upper deck would be safe, and therefore all would be safe, including those
in the lower deck.”
Fellow Muslims blessed by Allah,
Among the conclusions which we can gain from the sermon today are as
33
follows:
5
Sermon Manual Multimedia
First:
The Key To Freedom
Each act of a Muslim must be based on knowledge, for it is
knowledge that can properly discern truth from falsehood,
corruption and confusion.
Second:
Determination and patience are among the important
attributes that each Muslim should have in order to attain
greatness, progress and happiness in this world and in the
Hereafter.
Third:
The regression of the Muslim ummah is due to Muslims not
being strongly united in moving towards progress.
Fourth:
The knowledge, determination, patience, unity and character
of Salahuddin al-Ayubi and his armies should be made as
examples in understanding the true meaning of jihad in
Islam, and what it actually entails.
Allah SWT declared in surah al-Haj verse 40:
‫ﭷ ﭸ ﭹ ﭺﭻ‬
34
‫ﭝ ﭞ ﭟ ﭠ ﭡﭢ ﭣ ﭤ ﭥ ﭦ ﭧﭨ ﭩ ﭪ ﭫ ﭬ‬
‫ﭭﭮﭯ ﭰﭱﭲﭳﭴﭵﭶﭷﭸﭹ‬
‫ﭺ ﭻ ﭼ ﭽﭾ ﭿ ﮀ ﮁ ﮂ ﮃ‬
Which means: “(They are) those who have been expelled from their
homes in defiance of right, (for no cause) except that they say, "our Lord is
Allah”. Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there
35
would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues,
and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant
measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause); for verily Allah
