PRAISE:
"This wonderful go-to book will help real
people create not just musical
opportunities, but a musical
home."--Dar Williams
"More than just helpful tips about
singing together, [this book] is an
invitation to be fearless and sing our
hearts out."--Annie Patterson and Peter
Blood, editors of Rise Up Singing
Make music a part of your every day: Everyone is musical, and this book presents
creative ideas, tips, games, and songs to help every family with young children introduce
more music into their lives. While there are many songbooks available, as well as serious
books on music education and philosophy, this book offers a wonderful range of
information and material in one place--the games, songs, and philosophy are all here.
Everything you need to get singing--including a 28-song CD: Little kids love singing
and being being sung to. This book contains songs for everyone and every time:
traditional folk songs and original songs; lullabies and work songs (such as "Time to Take
a Bath"); songs to be sung in rounds, with hand movements, or while dancing; and more.
For each song, readers are given the lyrics, the guitar and piano chords (should you want
to play along), and a recording on CD.
Want to pick up an instrument or take music more seriously? Songs are presented
with guitar chords and charts to make playing along easy. The book also presents ideas
for playing simpler instruments, from cardboard guitars to shaker eggs and more. Should
your child want to seriously learn to play an instrument, there's advice on music
education methods and practicing.
Authors have a strong musical background: The authors have been in a successful
recording band since 1991; since 2001 they have been touring as a duo. They have
released two family music albums to date, which have been reviewed in Parenting
magazine, NPR's All Things Considered, Cookie magazine online, and elsewhere online.
They also continue to run HooteNanny, a music class for children up to five years of age
and their parents.
About the Author/Illustrator
Author Residence: Northampton, MA
NERISSA AND KATRYNA NIELDS are national touring musicians and sisters, a
part of the legendary band The Nields who toured North America throughout the
nineties and into this millennium. As a duo, they were a part of Lillith Fair, and
have shared the stage with Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Natalie Merchant, Suzanne
Vega, Sarah McLaughlin, Dar Williams, the Indigo Girls, James Taylor, Joan
Baez, the Band, 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg, Dan Zanes, and countless others.
With fifteen albums in fifteen years, they remain prolific. Now that they are parents
to young children, they have expanded their repertoire to include the youngest in
the folk festival crowds. They have released two family albums, All Together
Singing in the Kitchen and Rock All Day/Rock All Night, and a family music DVD
titled Organic Farm.

Breakthrough insights and simple techniques for developing the kind of
confidence that is deep-seated and long-lasting.
Too many of us miss out on opportunities in life because we lack
self-confidence. Whether it involves public speaking, taking on a leadership role,
or starting a relationship, we often don't feel equipped to handle new challenges.
Most confidence-building strategies--such as affirmations and positive
self-talk--help us only in the short term, if at all. Russ Harris offers a surprising and
revolutionary solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity. Rather than
trying to vanquish our fears, the secret is actually to form a new and wiser
relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our
fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.
The Confidence Gap draws on proven mindfulness-based techniques and on
the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to provide a
long-term solution. (ACT is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that has been
shown to be effective in treating a range of mental health problems.) Harris
combines key insights, anecdotes, and exercises, along with humor and
playfulness, to show readers how to overcome self-defeating patterns and get
more out of life.
Key Points/Quotes
An easy, enjoyable read with techniques that readers can put to use immediately.
Interest in ACT is growing: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a
mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, continues to attract interest, with national and
international conferences, professional trainings, websites, blogs, and listserves. Russ
Harris is well connected within the international ACT community, and this book features a
foreword by Steven Hayes, PhD, the creator of ACT.
Follow-up to a successful book: Russ Harris is the author of The Happiness Trap, an
introduction to the principles and techniques of ACT, which has sold approximately
27,000 copies.

Here I Am
Using Jewish Spiritual Wisdom to Become More
Present, Centered, and Available for Life
Leonard Felder
Stress-management techniques drawn from Jewish wisdom to create more
awareness, clarity, and calmness when faced with stress-related
emotions--from a well-respected psychologist.
In these stressful times, it's easy to get caught up in feeling anxious, tense,
foggy, overloaded, and unable to appreciate the simple gifts in your life. In this
book, a popular psychologist shares techniques for managing and rebalancing
these emotions and helps you to find your calm, strong center. The author draws
from traditional Jewish prayers and blessings that have been used for centuries to
refocus the mind; techniques that help you to reappraise a situation, manage your
emotions, spend a moment in appreciation or contemplation, or to make a
moment holy.

Beauty Pure and Simple
The Ayurvedic Approach to Beautiful Skin
Kristen Ma
The first concise guide to understanding how to care for and beautify your
skin from both the Western and Ayurvedic perspectives.
Beauty Pure and Simple provides an all-natural, holistic view of skincare and
beauty drawn from both the latest in skincare science and from Ayurveda, a
system of wellness that has been practiced for thousands of years on the Indian
subcontinent. In this practical guide, the author, who is both a popular esthetician
and an Ayurvedic practitioner, explains both views and how they can work
harmoniously together, helps readers determine their true skin type, and then
recommends individualized regimens with easy-to-obtain products. She also
covers such topics as dealing with skin changes that come with aging, protecting
skin from the sun and pollutants, the effect of stress on skin and how to cope with
it, and how to treat common problems such as dark circles under the eyes,
breakouts, acne, eczema, rosacea, puffy eyes, hyperpigmentation, and many
others.

Simple-to-make toys with a modern sensibility: With a minimal number of steps,
hand-drawn instructional illustrations, and ordinary materials, the projects in this book are
simple to make and exhibit a minimalist style.
Emphasis on imagination and play: Young children don't need elaborate toys--the
simplest materials can make for the most entertaining items, allowing a child to explore
and imagine as they like. The toys in this book speak to children's vibrant imaginations,
allowing them to use each toy in their own games, scenarios, and play.
Written by popular blogger, crafter, and designer: Creator of the blog
MadeByJoel.com, Joel Henriques has been developing a lot of attention online and in
print. His blog (which was created in July 2009) currently receives 129,000 page views a
month from over 33,000 unique viewers in 135 different countries. His designs have also
been featured in print magazines, including Parents magazine, Nido magazine
(Germany), Junior magazine (UK), Luna magazine (Germany), Vanity Fair (Italy), Bazaar
(Singapore), kleinformat (Germany), 4Kids magazine (Ireland), Lilica and Tigor (Brazil),
and Anorak (UK). He's also been featured in the online magazines LMNOP (Austrailia),
La Petite magazine (France), and Kireei magazine (Spain). He's currently working on toy
designs for Cheerios, Made in Me (London), and Oeuf (New York).
About the Author/Illustrator
Author Residence: Portland, OR
JOEL HENRIQUES is fascinated by color, shape, and craftsmanship. He was
drawn to painting as a child, inspired by his grandmother, a painter herself. She
spent hours showing Joel the paintings of Matisse, Picasso, Miró, and many
others. Through these and her own paintings, she taught him ideas about color
and design and eventually coached him on his earliest paintings. These childhood
experiences lead him to pursue a B.A. in Fine Art and Philosophy. Becoming a
parent was, for Joel, another way of looking at art in the world. As a young child
himself, he made many of his own toys. As a father, he began making toys for his
young twins. He began to see that a beautiful, minimal, well-crafted object allowed
his children to use and develop their own imaginations, rather than having an
object tell them how they must play with it. Moved by his children's interaction with
art, Joel began documenting these crafts on his blog, Made By Joel. Creating art
for children, and for the child in everyone, is a powerful thing. Joel lives with his
wife and three-year-old twins in Portland, Oregon. See more of his crafts at
www.madebyjoel.com, and see more of his art at www.joelhenriques.com.

Beyond Happiness
The Zen Way to True Contentment
Ezra Bayda
A Zen teacher explains that true happiness can only be found by dropping
our ideas about happiness and learning to live fully and fearlessly in the
moment.
Many books have been published in recent years on happiness. Ezra Bayda, a
remarkably down-to-earth Zen teacher, believes that the happiness "boom" has
been largely a bust for readers. Why? Because it's precisely the pursuit of
happiness that keeps us trapped in cycles of dissatisfaction and suffering. Bayda
offers alternatives to achieve the deepest, most lasting form of happiness through
Zen insights and simple mindfulness practices.

Happiness is not what you think it is: Most of us continually seek happiness in things
that are external to us. We imagine that getting more money, a better relationship, or
going on a nice vacation will finally make us happy. But Zen teacher Ezra Bayda shows
us that it is only by dropping our pursuit of happiness and learning to surrender to what
actually is--surrendering to the truth of our lived experience--that we can find the deepest
and most lasting form of happiness.
Bayda writes with exceptional clarity about Zen and its relevance to daily life.
Publishers Weekly has likened his writing to that of Pema Chödrön, author of the
best-selling book When Things Fall Apart.
Loaded with simple mindfulness practices that will help readers to put these insights
into action in their day lives. Practices include: the Three Questions (a tool for seeing
through our illusions about happiness), sitting meditation, gratitude practice, and
loving-kindness practice.

Rebel Buddha
On the Road to Freedom
Dzogchen Ponlop
This young Tibetan lama is calling on spiritual seekers, especially today's
youth, to go against the status quo of complacency and invoke the "rebel
buddha" within to wake up and instigate inner change. Ethan Nichtern,
author of One City: A Declaration of Interdependence, says that "Rinpoche's
voice roars with the relaxed confidence of authenticity, and the fierce
urgency of now."
Dzogchen Ponlop offers an extraordinary introduction to Buddhist philosophy
and practice. Extraordinary because it is both completely fresh in its viewpoint and
language, and because it's completely authentic to the Buddhist tradition and true
to his training as a Tibetan lama.

Praise for Rebel Buddha:
"Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche shatters
old myths and sweeps away cultural
baggage, presenting the essence of the
Buddha's teachings in a fresh,
contemporary voice. With uncommon
clarity and authority, he offers a new
vision for the future of Buddhism that is
at once shocking and hopeful. This is a
small book with a big message that is
timely and important."--Pema Chödrön,
author of When Things Fall Apart
"Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche has a
remarkable ability to present the wisdom
of the Buddha's teachings in a manner
that is as fresh and accessible as it is
profound. This book is sure to provoke,
inspire, and move us one step closer to
creating a thoroughly modern approach
to spirituality."--Yongey Mingyur
Rinpoche, author of The Joy of Living
"A seminal work for the growth of
Buddhism in contemporary society.
Rinpoche's voice roars with the relaxed
confidence of authenticity, and the
fierce urgency of now."--Ethan Nichtern,
author of One City: A Declaration of
Interdependence
Buddhism for a new generation: At the core of the Buddhist tradition is a radical idea:
in order to understand reality, we need to let go of all our concepts about who we are and
how our world works. By explaining this revolutionary view--"Do not believe in anything
simply because you have heard it"--Dzogchen Ponlop (ZOGE-chen PUN-lop) has written
the book that will turn on a new generation to Buddhism. It uses their language and
makes Buddhism relevant to the world we live in now.
Rebel Buddha is inside us all: Not an esoteric concept, the rebel Buddha is native to us
all, a fundamental aspect of our mind--the agent of awakening. With the right perspective,
we need only to wake up to our innate wisdom (the rebel within), which is accessible
through meditation and contemplation. With this revolutionary view, says Dzogchen
Ponlop, we can resist the status quo of believing that the pain and confusion we
experience is real. We can awaken our inner rebel Buddha and experience life directly
and freshly.
Worldwide following: With a large following of students in their twenties and thirties,
and with groups in major cities in the U.S. and Canada, as well as Austria, Germany,
Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Dzogchen Ponlop has an international community of students.
He founded and runs Nalandabodhi.org, the umbrella website for the Nalandabodhi
network of meditation and study centers, and Nitartha Institute for Higher Buddhist
Studies, a program for in-depth studies of Tibetan Buddhist traditions. He travels and
teaches in North America, Europe, Taiwan, and Hong Kong year-round.
"This book does a wonderful job of bringing the Buddha's teachings to all of us
here in the West. Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche has great insights into the workings
of our minds, guiding us from delusion to clarity."--Sharon Salzberg, author of
Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience

Daring to Trust
Opening Ourselves to Real Love and Intimacy
David Richo
The best-selling author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships explains how
to build trust--the essential ingredient in successful relationships--despite
our fears or past betrayals.
In this book, Richo explores the importance of trust throughout our emotional
lives: how it develops in childhood and how it becomes an essential ingredient in
healthy adult relationships. He emphasizes that developing trust in others begins
by developing true trust in ourselves--in our feelings, our body, and in our inner
voice--and he offers practical exercises for exploring and enhancing our sense of
trust.

Trust is the key: Drawing on decades of experience as a therapist, David Richo asserts
that all relationship problems are essentially trust problems. In this book, he explains how
to develop trust, even in the aftermath of disappointments and betrayals. Trust--both in
ourselves and in others--he explains, is the essential ingredient in all successful
relationships, as well as in our emotional well-being as a whole.
In order to trust others, we must learn to trust ourselves: Richo explains that we
cannot trust others until we establish real trust in ourselves. He offers guidance in
developing greater trust in our feelings; our intuitions or inner voice; and our body, which
can tell us a lot about ourselves and others if we can learn to "listen" to it.
An author with a strong track record: David Richo's self-help titles have enjoyed
cumulative sales of more than 150,000 copies.

The Power of an Open Question
The Buddha's Path to Freedom
Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel; Foreword by Dzigar
Kongtrul
Shows how contemplating the mysteries on the Buddhist path, without
expections, leads to the most powerful spiritual insights--by a fresh new
voice in Western Buddhism.
By telling the story of the Buddha's awakening, Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel
shows us that by contemplating hard questions, and by not simply rejecting
seeming contradictions in his experience, the Buddha became enlightened. She
shows how this method can lead spiritual seekers to their own answers today.

Contemplating difficult questions leads to powerful answers: This book poses tough
questions: What causes human suffering? Where is the self? How do we get beyond
"us-and-them" ways of thinking? By inviting us to be curious about our personal
experience and to trust our insights, she guides us on a spiritually enriching journey of
contemplation that could last a lifetime. This book is both relentless and full of humor in
its enthusiastic examination of the big questions.
Strong new American voice: Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel speaks with the authority of her
training in traditional Tibetan Buddhism. Her language is friendly and inviting, and her
approach is completely accessible. In this encouraging book, she invites us on a journey
of inquiry that reaches Buddhists at all levels of experience.
Author is uniquely positioned: As the wife of Tibetan lama and author Dzigar Kongtrul,
one of the most respected Tibetan lamas in North America, Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel's
reputation as a strong practitioner and helpful teacher are well established. Trained as a
teacher in her own right, she understands the challenges of Western people who want to
commit to the Buddhist path--and have a family, a career, and a home life.

Smile at Fear
A Retreat with Pema Chodron on Discovering Your
Radiant Self-Confidence
Pema Chodron; Carolyn Rose Gimian
The best-selling author and beloved Buddhist nun shares her teacher
Chögyam Trungpa's instructions on discovering unconditional confidence.
We all have fears, but when we look closely at them, we discover that behind
each fear resides a basic fear of ourselves. We're afraid to look at our habitual
styles of thinking and behaving because we might not always like what we see.
Ironically it is this fear of honest self-reflection that keeps us trapped in patterns of
stress and discontentment. Here is a vision for moving beyond this most basic
fear to discover the innate bravery, trust, and joy that reside at the core of our
being.
In this recorded retreat, Pema Chödrön shares teachings inspired by the book
Smile at Fear, which was written by her teacher Chögyam Trungpa. Pema and
her teaching assistant, Carolyn Rose Gimian, also share practices they received
from Trungpa Rinpoche for courageously meeting ourselves in the present
moment, including:

A Buddhist dream team: Pema Chödrön and Chögyam Trungpa are two of Buddhism's
best-selling authors. This is the first time their teachings appear together, which makes
this program particularly appealing.
A transformational retreat in the comfort of your own home: Pema Chödrön's books
have sold over one million copies. However, her limited teaching schedule has left
readers hungry to hear Pema's voice. This recording allows listeners to "attend" Pema's
most recent retreat for a fraction of the price, and they can benefit from it without
rearranging their lives to attend the program.
"Pema Chödrön has a remarkable knack for making spiritual practices
simultaneously insightful and funny."--AudioFile
"Chögyam Trungpa's Smile at Fear teachings offer powerful dharma
encouragement to awaken our own fearless and wise heart."--Jack Kornfield

Bringing Home the Dharma
Awakening Right Where You Are
Jack Kornfield; Foreword by Daniel Siegel, MD
One of America's most popular Buddhist teachers explains that we don't
have to look to the East for the secrets of awakening--the wisdom and peace
we seek is available right here, in our ordinary daily lives.
Many people seeking inner peace and self-cultivation look to the East for
inspiration and guidance. Author Jack Kornfield himself pursued rigorous training
in traditional Buddhist monasteries in Southeast Asia. Here he shares the fruits of
four decades of study and practice in the East and the West, highlighting one
essential insight: true wisdom is found nowhere else than right here in this very
moment, as we go about our daily lives. We need not travel to an ashram or a
meditation retreat--our households, relationships, and work lives give us profound
opportunities to awaken our buddha nature, our natural wisdom and
loving-kindness. In this book, Kornfield shares this and other key lessons he has
learned studying with some of the most revered Buddhist masters of the twentieth
century. Topics include: realizing our full potential, conscious parenting, common
obstacles to awakening, spirituality and sexuality, enlightened political action, and
much more.

A Little Book of Love
Practical Advice on Bringing Happiness to Ourselves
and Our World
Moh Hardin
Teachings from the Buddhist tradition on opening the heart and deepening
relationships, written with unusual clarity, simplicity, and warmth--for
readers of any background.

readers of books by Pema Chödrön and Thich Nhat Hanh.
The book begins with a discussion about making friends with ourselves as the
basis for loving others, including a simple Buddhist practice for developing greater
self-acceptance and self-compassion. The book goes on to offer insights and
practices for deepening our intimate relationships and becoming more loving
parents.
Next, Hardin discusses love on a bigger scale, introducing the idea of becoming

The Reality of Being
The Fourth Way of Gurdjieff
Jeanne de Salzmann
An important new book on the spiritual philosophy of Gurdjieff--one of the
most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century--by his closest student.
As the closest pupil of the charismatic spiritual master G. I. Gurdjieff
(1866-1949), Jeanne de Salzmann was charged with carrying on his teachings of
spiritual transformation. Known as the Fourth Way or "the Work," Gurdjieff's
system was based on teachings of the East that he adapted for modern life in the
West. Now, some twenty years after Mme. de Salzmann's death, the notebooks
that she filled with her insights over a forty-year period (and intended to publish)
have been translated and edited by a small group of her family and followers. The
result is this long-awaited guide to Gurdjieff's teaching, describing the routes to be
traveled and the landmarks encountered along the way.

A major spiritual movement: George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (1866-1949) was one of the
major spiritual masters of the twentieth century. His teachings--known as the Fourth Way
or the Work--were based on esoteric practices of the East that he adapted for modern life
in the West. Several books by and about Gurdjieff and his teachings have become
classics, including Meetings with Remarkable Men, Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson,
and In Search of the Miraculous by P. D. Ouspensky.
A seminal work from a key figure: Jeanne de Salzmann is widely recognized as
Gurdjieff's chosen successor, charged with carrying on his teachings, publishing his
writings, and establishing Gurdjieff centers worldwide. Since she was an important
teacher in her own right, this compilation of her insights and guidance will be eagerly
read by those interested in the Fourth Way.
Continued interest in Gurdjieff: As the last major work by a direct student of Gurdjieff,
this book is on a par in importance with the works of Gurdjieff himself, as well as his
famous proponent P. D. Ouspensky.
About the Author/Illustrator
JEANNE DE SALZMANN (1889-1990) was born in France and pursued a career
in music, dance, and theater. She met Gurdjieff in 1919 and became his closest
pupil. Before his death in 1949, Gurdjieff directed Mme. de Salzmann to continue
his work worldwide. She founded centers in New York, Paris, London, and
Caracas, Venezuela. Madame, as she was called with respect, was a highly
esteemed teacher in her own right, transmitting the Gurdjieff Work and especially
his "Movements," or sacred dances.
