Nobel Biocare opens first Procera plant in Japan
sites in Karlskoga, Sweden, and
Yorba Linda, Calif.
Nobel Biocare opened its first
Japanese Procera plant in Tokyo on
September 1. The company now has
the capacity to manufacture ceramic
dental implants in all major world
markets.
Nobel Biocare built the plant in
response to rapid growth in the demand for dental implants in Japan
and the rest of Asia. The site, which
makes crowns, bridges, abutments
and laminates, also has training facilities to bolster product support
throughout Japan. It passed the ISO
13485 quality audit with zero nonconformities.
“Our new plant in Japan is the
perfect example of how we deliver
our best-in-class solutions to our
customers around the world,” says
Heliane Canepa, pesident and CEO
of Nobel Biocare. “We are now closer to our Japanese customers to support them even better. We will be
able provide beautiful smiles to patients in a quicker and easier way.”
The company has had a direct
presence in Japan, its third largest
market, for 20 years. Nobel Bio-
care also has ceramic centers in
Stockholm, Sweden, and Mahwah,
N.J., and implant manufacturing

dental group was founded 30 years
ago. It generates nearly $13 million
in annual patient revenue.
As a result of the acquisition, Western New York Dental Group, an ADP
affiliate, will have more than 50 dentists across 14 sites in Buffalo and two
in Rochester. The combined group
will generate around $34 million in
patient revenue. ADP is affiliated with
25 dental group practices that have

Demand for individualized dental
restorations is growing rapidly in
Asia, including Japan. Market studies indicate that in 2006, sales of
CAD/CAM supported solutions grew
by 70 percent in Asia, and the Japanese market for dental implants is
growing at an annual pace of nearly
18 percent. During the first six
months of 2007, Nobel Biocare posted a 45 percent increase in sales of
dental implants in Japan.

Procera is a high-tech process that
enables dental professionals to outsource the production of individually
designed crowns, bridges, laminates
and abutments. Nobel Biocare has already manufacturered more than 7
million Procera products. They can be
ordered online, around-the-clock
using digital files containing design
specifications for individual treatment
solutions. The fully automated production process begins immediately upon
receipt of the file, and after a few hours
a custom-made product is sent to a

Phages under development to fight staph
The health care community, desperate for relief from bacterial superbugs, may soon get help from a
surprising source: viruses. Research
published in the August issue of the
journal Antimicrobial Agents and
Chemotherapy indicates that viruses
harmless to humans may soon be
available for treating patients and
ridding hospitals and health centers
of drug-resistant bacteria.
Staphylococcus aureus (staph), a
common bacterium, infects an estimated 500,000 patients in U.S. hospitals each year. It is blamed for
health problems ranging from skin
lesions to meningitis, pneumonia
and toxic shock syndrome. One

1,000,000 PATIENTS SAFELY TREATED
Anthony Feck, DMD and Michael Silverman, DMD
have personally treated over 5,400 sedation cases using these
techniques. Together they have trained more than 10,200 dental
professionals who have, in turn, safely treated over 1,000,000
high-anxiety patients. Many of these patients had not seen a
dentist in more than 20 years.

Iannelli and colleagues used the
phage to save 97 percent of mice infected with otherwise lethal doses of
staph. In mice infected with nonlethal doses of staph, the virus eliminated all the bacterial infections.
Bacteria develop resistance to
phages more slowly than to antibiotics. In addition, fresh phages can
be found relatively quickly. Antibiotics are more costly and time-consuming to develop. DT

Dental industry news
Offering adult Oral Conscious Sedation provides many advantages to
caring dentists: treating a more comfortable patient; performing more
dentistry in a single visit instead of requiring the patient to return
again and again; extensive restorative cases from patients who were
previously reluctant due to anxiety; and patients who feel little to no
post-operative discomfort regardless of the procedure — resulting
in more referrals.

More than 1,800 school children benefit
from Schein’s classroom program
Henry Schein, Inc., the distributor
of healthcare products and services
to office-based practitioners in the
combined North American and European markets, is providing more
than 1,800 children with complete
new outfits for their first day of
school, including sneakers, socks,
undergarments and pants or skirt.
In addition, children will receive
a backpack filled with school supplies, books and hygiene products to
make their first day enjoyable and
stress-free. The initiative, now in its
tenth year, is part of Henry Schein
Cares, the Company's global social
responsibility program.
Henry Schein's annual Back to
School program has become greatly
anticipated throughout Team Schein
and our communities because it enables us to directly enhance a child's
life," said Gerald A. Benjamin, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Henry
Schein.
“Team Schein Members are provided with a child's profile, and they contribute their own time and money to se-
UnitedHealthcare
donates equipment
to Connecticut
UnitedHealthcare is donating $1.4
million in pediatric and adult dental
equipment to 18 federally qualified
health centers in Connecticut. The
donation is part of a $4 million commitment the company made to the
state when it acquired Oxford
Health Plans.
The donations will fortify the
state’s efforts to upgrade dental care
for low-income residents. In October
2006, Connecticut’s Bond Commission approved Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s
proposal for $25.8 million in improvements, including dental facilities, to non-profit federally qualified
health centers.
“UnitedHealthcare is committed
to helping improve access to high
quality health care, particularly for
young people, and to support initiatives that help educate and empower individuals to take responsibility
for their health and those of their
loved ones,” says UnitedHealthcare
Northeast CEO Michael Turpin.
“UnitedHealthcare is pleased to
make this contribution, and we will
continue to work with the State of
Connecticut on ways to improve the
health care system in Connecticut
for all its citizens.” DT
lect clothing they believe the child will
appreciate. Best of all, we invite participating children to Henry Schein for a
special party where we present them
with their new outfits and backpacks of
books and supplies. Team Schein Members staffing the party see first hand the
smiles and excitement of these children
as they receive and open their gifts. It is
a unique experience that strengthens
Team Schein spirit as it enriches the life
of everyone involved.”
Henry Schein's Back to School
program was introduced in 1998
where the Company furnished clothing and school supplies to 75 children and worked with local social
service organizations to identify the
recipients. The program has grown
steadily over the last 10 years.
This year, Team Schein Members
from Florida, Indiana, Nevada, New
York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina,
Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin in
the United States; and from Halifax,
Montreal, Niagara-on-the-Lake and
Toronto in Canada are participating
in the program, purchasing clothes
to make kids feel great when they
reenter the classroom.
“Early childhood development
studies clearly indicate that children
who enter the school year on an
even level with their peers, possessing the proper clothing, books,
classroom supplies and other learning tools, enjoy a higher level of academic achievement and social development," said Jim Harnett, President and CEO for Family and Children's Association based in Mineola,
New York. DT
