Peabody Y to raise money for cancer
By Robin Kaminski / The Daily Item
PEABODY - Think pink.
In an effort to raise awareness for National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, CYBEX International, Inc., will pay 10 cents per mile to
support breast cancer research when members of the PeabodyLynnfield YMCA sweat it out on a new pink treadmill.
The YMCA branch purchased the 750T pink treadmill to not only get
its members moving, but also to raise money for the disease, which
is recognized this month.
"The Peabody-Lynnfield YMCA recognizes that breast cancer is the
number two cause of cancer deaths in U.S. Women," said Fitness
Director Heather Thompson. "We want to be part of the national
effort to find a cure, for our members who are women and for
women everywhere."
Thompson said when CYBEX offered the center the opportunity to
join the partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, it
enthusiastically accepted.
"We think members will choose to work out on the pink treadmill for
their October workouts because they realize that every mile is one
step closer to a cure," she said. CYBREX produces the top of the line
treadmill in the company's manufacturing facility in Medway, where a
powder-coating system allows them to produce products in virtually
any color.
"Although the positive effects of exercise have long been known to
reduce obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, less
well known is that exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer,"
said Paul Juris, executive director of the CYBEX Institute. "Data
supports women of any age can reduce their breast cancer risk up to
23 percent with six or more hours a week of moderate exercise."
