Komen Breast Cancer Foundation combine forces to raise money for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. To date, BMW of North America has donated over $10 million dollars to help find a cure for breast cancer. In conjunction with this fund raising event, a local hero is honored for his or her commitment to serving the needs of women with breast cancer. This year’s hero was Stacea Boss, DPT, CLT-LANA. Stacea is a BCSS Board member, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and a nationally certified Lymphedema Therapist through the Lymphology Association of North America. She is employed by The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. Stacea has helped numerous breast cancer survivors through treatment for lymphedema, or arm swelling. Removal of lymph nodes during breast surgery and radiation treatment can sometimes lead to lymphedema. When this occurs, Stacea provides treatment through Manual Lymphatic Drainage/Complete Decongestive Therapy, instruction in therapeutic exercises which enhances lymphatic drainage out of the arm and trunk, and patient education regarding precautions and home management programs with the ultimate goal of self-management with minimal impact on quality of life. Overall outcome is reduction of edema and risk of infection, increased knowledge and self-care regarding lymphedema. We congratulate Stacea for being chosen the 2006 Local Hero and salute her for her work with breast cancer patients! sue viener mary louise williams priscilla zintak executive director peggy mcshane breast cancer supportline: 610.375.9925 this newsletter is funded by the susan b. singer memorial fund Stacea Boss signing the Ultimate Drive signature car at Dick Horrigan BMW, Reading. bcssnewsspring’06 photo exhibit coming to west reading ties, along with a message about how breast cancer touched her life.
